Harvey Beckwith, new elected president of the Portland Commercial Club, with which to uphold his administration over the business men's organization. It goes without say ing, to those who are familiar with Commercial Club affairs. that these "weapons" are the gift of the Knockers' BURKHART'S BIPLANE READY WITHIN MONTH Oregon Inventor Has Every Confidence Machine Which Has Taken Him Long to Build Is Constructed on Right Principle. JC. EURKHART, whose unfinished aeroplane has heen viewed by large crowds each day at the automobile show, although expressing faith in the .success of his enterprise, is determined to continue working for a perfect machine In case the one now being constructed does not meet expectations when completed. Before graduating from Cornell Univer sity, Mr. Burkhart developed an interest In flying machines, and immediately after leaving college in June, 1908, he began the construction of a machine, which gave him an insight Into the problems of aerial navigation. Constantly since that time he has been planning and studying methods for com pleting a- successful airship. The one he is now constructing has several features of his own invention, chief of these being an arrangement for lowering and raising the lifting wings in such a way as con stantly to provide a balance- for the ma chine. Owing to the lack of knowledge of the necessary nature of the available median, les, Mr. Burkhart is finding much trouble In getting his machine completed to suit his taste. He is constructing his machine of Oregon spruce, and when completed it will weigh about 450 pounds without the operator. Until his machine has been tried out nd found to meet expectations, Mr. Burk hart will not put wheels on It, but will start it by means of skids on a track con Services in City Churches BATTIST. GIVES TO IIARVKV BECSWITH BY THE Club, whose members are always on the alert for an opportunity to spring some Joke to enliven things around the club rooms. The "big stick" presented to Mr. Beck with Is fully as formidable as the one brandished by Mr. Roosevelt in all the cartoons, and the gavel could be suit ably wielded by a man with the avoir dupois of Mr. -Roosevelt's successor in office. The presentation occurred at the Commercial Club luncheon yesterday, the structed for that purpose. To put on wheels would mean much additional weight, which he does not care to have at the beginning. It will perhaps take another month to complete the machine, Mr. Burkhart said yesterday, although by rushing the work it can be finished at an earlier date. No effort will be made to fly until the weath er has Improved. The biplane being constructed by Mr. Burkhart is provided with a 40-horsepower Curtiss engine, and it is hoped by the builder that he can maintain a speed of about S5 miles an hour. It will be driven by a six-foot propeller, which will make 1400 revolutions a minute. If the machine proves to be all its builder expects, it will be able to carry a passenger In addition to the operator, and a place is provided where a seat for that purpose can be placed. A new feature to be found in the Burk hart machine will be the placing of all rudder appliances in front of the operator, which Is deemed by the builder to be of much convenience, as the operator can thus be enabled to note anything that might go wrong with the working of that part of the machine. "I don't see any reason why the ma chine will not be a success," declared Mr. Burkhart, "but of course, until it is tried Its ability cannot be determined. In a way It is an experiment, but I am certain that the theory In which it Is being con structed is right. 10.30 A. M. : Sunday school. 9:30 A. M. ; benediction of the blessed sacrament. 7:30 P. M.
