THE SUNDAY OREGONIAN, PORTLAND, JANUARY 23, 1910- It BUILDERS ARE BUSY Permits Granted Already Ex ceed January, 1909, Mark. RECORD MAY BE DOUBLED Issuance of Two Large Permits Promised Which "Will Increase Total to Considerably More Than Million Dollars. The office of the Building Inspector has been kept busy this week checking over plans for structures to be erected in Portland, and last week there were Issued a total of S3 permits, buildings valued at a total of $197,465. This brings the total for this month to $449, 764, or greater than the entire month of January, 1909, when the total was $431,415. That the Increase shown by Portland for the opening month of the year will be much greater than this, appears from the plans in the Building Inspector's office, which indicate that more than $500,000 will still be issued and with even a showing lower than ordinary in residence construction the total for the month should be over the $1,000,000 mark. . The plans for the Court House are now being checked and for this build ing a $250,000 permit will be issued in the coming week. Another large build ing which is being checked is the Rail way Exchange Building, to be built on Third and Stark streets at a cost of $250,000. The Building Inspector be lieves that tills permit will be issued before the end of the month and these two buildings, with about $200,000 in ordinary residence permits, should carry the total over $1,100,000. Such a showing for January is con sidered little short of remarkable, as this has at all times been the poorest month for building, owing largely to the inclement weather and the hesi tancy to start concrete work on founda tions when there is' danger of freezing. Activity among builders this month is believed to be an index of the great amount of building in store for the ensuing year, when it is predicted that the total wijl approach closely to the $20.00.000 mark. The permits issued each day last week were as follows: Monday, 23 for a total of $37,550; Tuesday, 20 for a total of $111,025; Wednesday, nine for a total of $4160; Thursday, 11 for a total of $17,620; Friday, nine for a total $9935; Saturday, 11 for a total of $17,175. IM- V Section, Shows Steady Growth, and Push Cluyb Plans to Keep Pace With Suburb's Development, The beautiful district of "Woodstock has taken new steps forward. At the last meeting of the Woodstock Push Club it was decided to hold a mass meeting the second Friday in February to consider the matter of street improvements. Wood stock now includes all the additions to ward the South, which have opened dur ing the past year, and where -there is a big settlement. The object is to adopt a uniform system of street improve ments for the territory, and then work them out as soon as possible. According to the action taken by the Push Club the people favor parking all the streets except that occupied by the streetcar tracks, and a few others that may be used -In the future for streetcars. Argument for parking the streets was that the cost of the pavements will he much less than the wide roadway. For residence districts like Sellwood it was considered that 26 feet is wide enough for general traffic.
