Within a few days the improvement on
Union avenue will be completed to- Al

longest hard pavement in the city. For
the main portion of the distance the ave
nue Is 89 feet wide and is occupied by a
double track. While the present improve
ment only extends to Highland, it will
probably be continued on to Columbia
boulevard next year, which would make
it over, six miles long.
From Russell street to Highland Union
avenue has been lined with business
houses. Peery & Wilson are completing
a two-story modern brick building, with
pressed brick facing, at Russell street

reason it is the connecting link with the
great hard-surface districts of Holladay

The cost to the property-owners on Union
avenue for the present improvement Is
1170.000 and for the street railway com

To the east of Union avenue lies the
Vernon district, which is one of the most
prosperous suburbs of Portland. On the
west side is Walnut Park, the most ex
clusive residence district on the East
Side, Piedmont, the pioneer home-building
section, and Woodlawn. All these
sections are growing rapidly and sub
stantially.
Residence lots are being sold dally all
through this section. In Walnut Park
nearly every house stands on a quarter
block, erected on a uniform plan, under
high building restriction. The samel
policy has always been followed In Pied
mont. The hard-surface area has been
extended through Piedmont and about
$100,000 Is to be expended In such improve

East of Union avenue to East Thirty

FEARS ANARCHIST F?L0T
Queen Victoria to Leave Spain Lest
Life Be Taken.
LONDON. Oct. 16. (Special.) The
news received from Spain that the An
archists are again becoming active has
created' considerable alarm among the
friends of Queen Vktorla in this coun
try. Her mother Is said to be very
anxious as to her safety and, although
the Queen has hitherto refused to leave
her husband, it Is now believed that,
yielding to her mother's solicitations, she
will leave for this country, within the
next few days.
It has been known for some time past
that another anarchist attempt on the
King's life had been planned, and from
proclamations recently seized at the
house of a prominent anarchist at Mad
rid, another socialistic revolution Is In
tended. There can be no doubt that thj
anarchists, who profess in Spain what
are termed "ideas llbertarlas would like
to see the attempt to assassinate the
King and Queen repeated.
SLANDER FAIR AMERICANS
English Society Women, Jealous of
Success, Spread Bad Stories.
LONDON, Oct. 16. (Special.) The
battle royal which is at present in prog
ress between certain erstwhile 1 leaders
of English society and the enterprising
American women whose wealth and at
tractive personalities have obtained them
the entree to quite the smartest set,
promises ,to become fiercer than ever, to
judge by the latest developments.
So jealous are the English women of
the fair Americans' social success that
they are resorting to tactics which are
hardly creditable in their attempts to
bring their rivals Into disfavor. Several
ladles of title have not 'hesitated to cir
culate statements of highly slanderous
nature concerning some of England's
guests from the other side of the Atlantic.
It would not be very surprising if this
campaign of calumny is eventually j
broupht to the notice of the courts.

STRONG SHIP PURCHASED FOR
ANTARCTIC TRIP.
Scottish Whaling Steamer Terra
Nova Will Carry Expedition to
Frozen Region of South.
LONDON. Oct. 16.-(Speclal.) The Brit
ish Antarctic expedition for 1910 has Is
sued a statement to the effect that ar
rangements have been made for the pur
chase of the steamer Terra Nova for
the expedition, which Is to start In Au
gust, 1910. The Terra Nova Is the largest
and strongest of the old Scottish whalers.
Built In Dundee in 1SS4. she Is considered
the best ship ever launched for the Green
land whale trade.
In 1903 she was purchased by the Ad
miralty as relief ship for the discovery
expedition. The year 1005 saw her In the
service of the North Polar expedition on
a visit to Franz Josef Land. After be
ing inspected in Newfoundland on behalf
of the expedition, she will sail for Eng
land, and, it is hoped, will reach the
Thames about the end of October br early
in November. The Terra Nova is bought.
but not yet paid for. Not only has the
ship been . obtained on most reasonable
terms, but in addition to this the Liver
pool and London directors of C. T. Bowr-.
ing & Co., Limited, the owners, have
promised a donation of $2000. The brokers.
David Bruce & Son, have also promised
to the expedition a large proportion of
their commission on the transaction,
which practically amounts to a gift of
$S0J.
Captain Scott said the Terra Nova was
a great deal larger than the Nlmrod,
Lieutenant Shaekleton's vessel. The in
creased size was necessary for the more
extensive plant of the expedition. "I
have already expressed the opinion, he
said, "that Shaekleton's 'Furthest South
can only be surpassed by taking more men
and more equipment. The officers and
crew for the expedition have been se
lected.
The development of hydro-electric energy,.
of which great examples are to be seen in
Sao Paulo. Rio de Janeiro and Bahia, is
likely to be one of the greatest lines of in
dustrial development in Brazil In the near
future.
