Reservations of boxes for the Portland Horse Siiov are evidence that local so ciety Is to turn out In force October 7, 8 and 9. while the show is in progress at the Oriental, building on the Lewis and Clark Exposition grounds. The Horse Show Is nearly two weeks off but a large proportion of the boxes have been taken and more are being engaged each day. There is now no doubt but that every one of the SO or more boxes will be re served before the opening. This means that entertaining, which was so popular during the two previous horse 6hows. will again be. a very pleasant feature. Ambrose Cronin. president of the Hunt Club, has Just compiled the following list of those who ' have already reserved boxes: List of Box-Holders. Mrs C. H. Lewis. F. V.". Leadhatter, Captain Blddls. There will be accommodations, outside of th boxes, for seating 10 people and Hunt Club Officers predict that these ac commodation will be taxed. The horses to be shown this year will be both more numerous and of higher class than those, entered in the two shows already held and it is believed that the show this year will accordingly draw much larger crowds. Expect Crowds Every Night. Report received from Victoria. B. C where a horse show has been In progressj throughout the entire week, are to the effect that the attendance there has been very satisfactory. While Victoria is known as a -city where riding and driving are very popular, it is argued if that place can support a six-day show, Port land with- a much larger population, should crowd the Oriental building to the limit during the three days of the event here. Those who have In hand arrangements for the local show are confidently pre dicting that H will surpass In every way both the Victoria shows and the one to be held in Seattle. In fact it is declared that the Portland show will bring' to gether the fines collection of horses and the most skilled riders and drivers ever assembled at one time in the Pacilio Northwest. There, will be over 250 horses here, and ao manjf of these will be shown in more than one claw, about 700 entries will be catalogued. The value of the horses to bo exhibited will be in the neighborhood- of 1150,000. Several cltixens of Portland have profited by the shows of the past and are now the owners of some splendid specimens of horse flesh, some of them even having taken the trouble to visit New York City and there select horses of considerable show merit in order that they might he In the front rank of exhibitors. The principal reason for the activity of. the Portland horse lovers Is that Vancouver and Victoria, B. C-. exhibitors have imported a large number of the. finest English . and Scotch show horses, which means that there will be the keenest competition at the coming Portland show, as well as . all over the show circuit of the Pacific Northwest. Among the newly imported show horses secured by Portland eouine lovers Is Flashlight, a famous' New Tork show horse which was recently purchased by J. P. O'Brien for his daughter. Miss-Lucille. Miss O'Brien, who is a clever horse woman, will ex hibit this splendid specimen of horse flesh at the Portland show, and may show her entry at the other North western exhibits. Among the other Portland people to add new blood to their stables are Mrs. H. C- Wortman and her daughter. Miss Markham.. Mrs. A. Keyer and H. C Embody. Professor Samuel E. Kramer, who will act as assistant to President Cronin at the coming show, is an expert whip anr has undertaken the training of sev- : eral of the imported show animals. LECTURES 0N "HAMLET" James Younfj, Shakespearean Schol ar, Talks to Audience at Orpheum." James Toung, an exponent of Shake spearean drama, was heard at the Orpheum Theater yesterday morning In a xinique and Interesting lecture on "A Rational View of Hamlet.'" which was given complimentary to the teachers of the public and private schools and the clubwomen of Portland. The programme also included a recital of the interview between Hamlet and his mother, in which Mr. Toung assumed the four characters in the scene. -, The subject was treated In an entirely original manner, and Mr. Toung proved to be a delineator and an analyzer of character a lecturer who lectures dra matically, and who is an educator. In liis discussion of this most widely known and interpreted plays," Mr. Young dwelt on Its charming simplicity and brought out the similar sweetness and charm of llnmlet's own nature. He came to the rescue of the character wherever It had been accused of weakness, and illustrat ed his lecture with timely quotations from the melancholy Dane. The three characteristics of the prince, which have been most discussed, are his mystery, madness and weakness of char acter. But Mr.- Young does not regard Hamlet as mysterious in any way, and gave many Interpretations In proof, of his assertion that mysticism is not a part of his character. Regarding his madness, Mr. Young's emphatic idea is that Shake speare did not intend to create such an Idea, instead, giving the world In Hamlet a character that would live forever; and since to our modern eyes, said Mr. Young, Hamlet has every appearance of sanity it would be a natural conclusion that his contemporaries would consider him of unsound mind. No other author has ever dared produce a Hamlet, and no other -writer tnan enaaespeare pos sesses the prophetic instinct which is the strongest Indication of his pre-eminent LV . - A ' N.,v ON k J. Mr. Dickson experienced some dif ficulty in deciding whether Portland or Seattle should be first, on the floor. The rules of the contest provided that the lodge making the first entry ehould be first on the floor, but Seattle and Port land lodges entered the same day. It was therefore suggested by the execu tive committee that Portland and Seattle east lots, but Seattle declined. Hassalo then, upon advice of Dr. Stryker, Dr. Newcastle, Henry S. Westbrook and George Cummings, waived theee rights In favor of Seattle. The contest was held in the Eagles Hall, Seventh avenue and Pine street. Long before the hour for opening an assemblage of 2500 Oddfellows from all parts of the world filled the hall, and as many more were denied admittance for lack of room. The Judges were B. D.
