Transient Guests Unusually Numer
ous at Popular Resort.
SEASIDE. Or., Aug. 28. (Special.) At
no time In beach history has Seaside en
Joyed a better patronage of transient
guests, week-end visitors and sightseers
whose only opportunity to view this
beautiful little beach must be made
hurriedly. The hoaCelrles have announced
no closing date, and the railroad officials
are equally optimistic regarding a good
attendance at Seaside until mid-September.
Many cottages, however, are closed and
the erstwhile occupants have returned
home, prior to the necessary preparations
for the oncoming school season. Most of
the younger set of boys and girls have
returned In anticipation of their departure
for various Eastern schools and colleges.
A few of the concessioners on the
Trail-like road that winds from the
bridge approach up the length of' the
old shell road have mitde startling and
wonderful auctions, rates and closing out
sales, and are preparing to flit with the
final closing of the season. Until that
day the skies are a medley of smiles and
tears, the natural attractions at the
beach remain undimmed, the surf bath
ing Is Incomparable, and people will con
tinue to find this resort a mecca that Is
unexcelled.

their sons, Roscoe and Willis, who have
occupied the P. L. Lewis cottage all sea
son, have returned to Portland.
Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Goodman have
arrived at the Moore, where Miss Rese
Goodman and her mother, Mrs. N. Good
man, have spent the season.
Mrs. Dan J. Malarkey was called to
Portland last week on account of Mr.

EXODUS BEGINS AT NEWPORT
Summer Season at Popular Resort
Is on the Wane.
NEWPORT. Or.. Aug. 28. (Special.)
The tension of the Summer rush Is over,
as a general exodus from Newport is now
In progress, there being fully twice the
number of people leaving to the num
ber arriving. . Last week brought in
much fewer than 1000 all told. There
is generally a slump between the Sum
mer and salmon-nshing time, late in
September; however, the band continues
to play at the arrival of the boat and
the city is a long way from being dead.
J. M. Nolan, a prominent merchant of
Corvallia. who left for home with' his
family on Tuesday, said that the climate
at Newport this season, in bis opinion,
has surpassed that' of all previous sea
sons, and he has been coming here reg
ularly for years. The hotel proprietors
say that the past season has been a
good one, though shorter than that of
1908, and the crowd in general has not
been quite so large.
Mrs. E. D. Custck and Master George
Cusiek. who . have beon visiting Mrs.
E. W. Langdon at the Lang Den, left
for their home in Albany last Monday,
Mr. Cusick arriving to escort them home.
Miss Christine Pipe, also of Albany, who
has been Miss. Grace Langdon's guest,
left for home on Wednesday.

This beach has pever been better pat
ronized at the fag end of any season
than it Is this month. Contrary to most
resorts a great number of the property
owners and vacationists who make Gear
hart their annual mecca, wait until the
mid-seasonal activity hae abated, and
arrive with the Autumnal days. Gear
hart has never been lovelier. The big,
beeautiful forests that skirt this incom
parable resort, are beginning to take on
their first changing tints of approach
ing ember months, and the cooling winds
and invigorating chill of rare morning
attract many who prefer this part of the
season for a sojourn at the big pond.
While many of the .handsome resi
dences at this resort are being closed,
and wear again c.ieir badge of desolation
with lron-bavred and boarded doors and
windows, it Is also noticed that the hotel
arrivals and transient guests are not
perceptibly diminishing, and it is eon
ceded that Gearhftrt Park will not write
"selah" after her season, for several
days yet to' come.

cent guest of Miss Grace Honeyman and
Miss Mildred Honeyman. who, with their
mother. Mrs. James Honeyman, are oc
cupying a cottage at Gearhart.
Miss Margaretto Brooke is a guest of
