Season at Oregon and Washington Beach Resorts Is in
' Full Swing. '
CARE-FREE FOLK REVEL IN SEASHORE DELIGHTS
LOSti BEACH. Wash- Aug. 14. (Spe
cial.) This deservedly popular re
sort Is proving a mecea for city
tired folk, and every day the crowds
at train time are augmented by doiens
of arrivals. The bracing- weather has
Inred many to North Beach, where the
offerings are unsurpassed for a Sum
mer's outing. At present extensive
plans are being made for the tennis
tournament at the Breakers, which will
beirin Monday and will continue until
next Saturday. The events promise to
be Intensely Interesting, and the fact
that the tourney is under the auspice
of the Multnomah Amateur Athletic
Club, of Portland, with a committee
composed of P. H. V. Andrews, E. L.
Mersereau. R. K. Warlnner. Irving
Ruhr, T. Morris Dunne. R. W. TVIlbur
and A. B. McAlpln. Insures an un
precedented success-
The week will also be one of social
brilliancy. On Tuesday evening a
- fr.cy dress dance will be given; an
oyster roast Is scheduled for Thursday
evening, with a banquet on Saturday
night, besides many small dinners and
luncheons interspersing.

side, a veritable park in Itself. Is one of
the most attractive watering places to be
found, and Is enjoying an activity that
Is remarkable ' for the - backward beach
weather that Is predominating along the
coast.
The crowd at this resort on Sunday was
one of the largest ever known here, and
the delightful weather has accented the
Joys of an outing at this Incomparable
resort. At present a note of Interest,
both social and material, Is lent by the
fact that Battery A of the Oregon Na
tional Guard Is In camp here, with Colo
nel C. U. Welch In command.
At the Moore this past week have been

GEARHART SEASOX AT HEIGHT
But Very Few Cottages Remain Un
opened This Season.

It may be safely estimated that Gearhart
Park has reached the acme of Its beach
season. ' Very few of the cottages are
unopened and If families have remained
away from their Summer residences In
almost every Instance others have rented
and occupied them. Gearhart is noted
for its many handsome homes and "with
the guests from Kruse's Beach Hotel, the
social life at the Park Is one of Its many
attractive features.
Mr and Mrs. James B. Kerr and two
children are domiciled in the Krimble cot
tage at Gearhart Park.
Mrs. N. Hodgson is a recent guest at
Kruse's Beach Hotel.

Many Good Times Enjoyed by Sum
mer Visitors at Resort.
NEWPORT, Or., Aug. 14. (Special.)
Energetic visitors have kept Newport a
live wire throughout last week. Glorious
weather permitted every kind of amuse
ment offered on land and water. Colonel
Hofer, Who Is among the visitors, modest
ly declines any credit for the "sunshine
and gazes passively at .the enjoyment of
the 3009 guests of the city, keeping an
anxious eye out for rain.
To enjoy a strenuous day at the beach
it is : necessary to rise early for break
fast Next comes a trip out over the bar
for deep-sea fish which ends in time for
luncheon. After that a horseback ride
to the lighthouse, four miles up the
coast, and on returning the visitor takes
his daily dip in the surf. Dinner is served
and then the dance at the Casino is on,
which Is followed by a bonfire on the
beach, when marshmallows are toasted
and nuts and jokes are cracked. Finally a
comfortable bed Is sought under the ex
cuse that the morrow must be prepared
for. With these entertainments accom
panied by brass band music, It would
seem that Newport Is not exactly Nthe
place for the rest cure in her busy Sum
mer season.

The Catholic Church social on Wednes
day evening at the Irvin Log Cabin was
the main public social event of the week.
Private parties of from six to 20 have
gathered in the cottages to play cards
and cook in chafing dishes when tired

in the various public places of amuse

through Tuesday evening en route to

Francis J. Heney, the San Francisco
prosecutor, was seeking seclusion and In
cidentally 8sh about Alsea Bay early In
the week, having bsen registered at
Wakefield's Hotel, Waldport. Mr. Heney
drove In from Corvallis and Intended to
go out by Florence and Eugene.
Judge Hamilton, of Roseburg, now hold
ing court at Toledo, spends his evenings
at Newport.
