1. A most suspicious function this
The children's fancy ball.
Gay little ones in costume filled
The gilded dancing hall;
And charming Cynthianna. dressed
, As Carmen, looked a queen;
That she the "belle" was sure to be
Was easily foreseen.
9. In spangled gown of reddest red,
. And roses in her hair,
With ejegance of grace she moved.
Composed and debonair.
About her gathered valiant youths
AH eager for a chance
Herenvied favor to command
And win her for a dance.
3. Now, Seymour Dividends, who was
As Caius Gracchus guised
At these attentions most pronounced
Grew greatly exercised;
His soul with jealous passion swayed
.And deep within his chest
A firm determination formed
These actions to arrest. .
4. But Guy Du Puyster Livingston,
Bedecked as Fauntleroy,
Did like emotions entertain
Of devastated joy;
And Cyril Drew, as Captain Kidd.
Grasped nervously his sword ;
He also harbored jealous pangs,
With feelings in accord.

5 -Then "Gracchus" with his dander up,
Approached with haughty air;
And so did "Kidd" and "Fauntleroy'
All anxious to declare "
Their deep undying love for her,
When Dividends expressed
. Objections to the "pirate and
The way that he was dressed.
6. This buccanpeer, in frightful rage,
mvii uvim ma glut auu- iiai
And called Cornelia's iewelled iov
A "hateful mean old brat.'
Then "Fauntleroy" stuck out his tongue,
And, much to his disgrace,
He joined the others on the floor

In prying "crime" and "ancient Rome"'
From modern -'FauntIeroy."
And over this assemblage gay
A dismaWeeling spread
, When, three belligerent cavaliers
Were spanked and put to bed. '
. With indignation Cynthia viewed
This scandalous affray,
And as she from the: scene withdrew ,
Was overheard to say :
I know a common grocer's boy,
. With no affected airs,
Whose manners while in public are
Much preferable to theirs."
