Vis itors and tourists reach Seaside after a delightful scenic ride from Portland along the shores of the magnificent old Columbia River, via the Astoria & Colum bia River Railroad. It's a four-hour ride when the train is on time, which has been the exception rather than the rule latterly. Splendid new cars, bright In their glories of plate glass windows and leather upholstering, with the added at traction of fine observation ears, which have been put on this line, and the new rails which replace the old ones from As toria to Seaside, Insure a much smoother and easier Journey. The largest crowd ever known to the proverbial oldest inhabitant or resident hotel-keeper, arrived at Seaside on Fri day, Saturday and Sunday of last week, with large bunches scattered about over Monday. The celebration was a thing of glory and a Joy forever. Dan J. Moore, proprietor of the Moore Hotel, wearing a flapping cape and plumed helmet, a la Crusader, capered gayly on an antiquated steed at the head of a. festive procession, which for enthusiasm and progression would be difficult to equal. Floats of all sorts and sizes, lassies In gala gowns with flowing hair, and tinfoil crowns, small urchins resplendent In trl-colored sashes, all blithely chanting "Columbia the Jam of the Oshun," with Columbia herself bravely smiling her moral support, together with other floats, typical of the day. lent a note of decided Interest. The band was exceptionally ?ood, and large crowds enjoyed the selections. In the afternoon, addresses and horse races vied for audiences, and while the rain persisted in getting in a certain share of its work, still the day was, like all other Fourths, a success. The hotels are all open and most of the cottages are showing signs of activity within. A large number of concessions on the shell road way are yet to be tak en, but there are several moving picture shows, refreshment booths and amuse ments of various sorts for young and old. ROADS HURRYING TO COAST Both Lytle Road and United Rail ways Have Augmented Crews. Both the Pacific Railroad & Naviga tion Company and-the United Railways Company are now working under In creased crews in their progress towards the coast. Chief Engineer Wlcker sham. of the United Railways, this week added another 50 men to the crew he now has at Summit, and stretched along the line, and his intention is to make forced going as soon as the rain breaks. There has not been enough ho. weather, Mr. Wlckersham said, to bake the ground, so from a railway point of view the rain was unnecessary. Contractor Sweeney, on the Lytle road now has over fiOO men at work. From Buxton he has completely graded five miles of road and a similar amount from the 20-mile post from Tillamook, where his contract starts. About 20 miles more have been roughly covered, and will be completed in the course of a few weeks. It is generally under stood that President Lytle desires his road completed by the Spring, and this being the case, any suggestion of a race between the P. R. & N. and United crews Is entirely without foundation, for the United Railways will make no attempt to complete construction at an earlier date than next Fall or the fol lowing Spring.
