Then U was transformed into a level space and today a cozy cottage surrounded by a vegetable garden, a berry patch, a tiny orchard and a rose-laden spot looms up where before only an unsight ly gap was the landscape. in effecting the wondrous change from gully to garden, from hole to home, John Roman, a janitor in The Oregonian building, devoted an hour of his spare time daily every bit of the task with the exception of filling- of the gulch being shouldered by himself. These, he states, have never been tried in Oregon and he is confident the soil of his property will make them prosper. Roman is a Pole and was raised in Austria. He came to Oregon ten years ago and for the last four years has been employed as a janitor ln The Ore gonian building. He was married here four years ago and has one child, little Pete, to whom falls the task of water ing the garden which he watched ma terialize from a "big hole." . "For the first time in my life I feel like a millionaire," said Roman yester day. "For nearly four years when I finished my night work I faced day work. ASHLAND IS BUSY PAVING Streets Are Torn Up for Laying ot Bitullthic Pavement. ASHLAND, Or.. July 8. Special.) Ashland's business district is all torn up over the paving proposition, not in wrangling over it. buf in the actual work of construction. Gangs of workmen are putting in curbing at a raipid rate, and soon the work of grading and putting in the base for the bitulithic pavement will be well under way. Visitors to Ashland for years past know the plaza as a public square in the busi ness section of the city. Under the plan of improvement now being worked out, this plaza will be made into a park, sur rounded by pavement and crossed by con crete walks, with fountain and watering places.
