LOCAL GRAIN MARKET IS INACTIVE-
No probability ot Hour Prices Advancing
Farther.
Trade In the local grain market yesterday
waa at a standstill and In view of the ex
hausted condition of supplies. Is likely to re
main so throughout the remainder of the sea
son. Until something more definite la known
of the coming wheat crop, dealers will not
be In a hurry to contract. Interest Is shown
In the growing oats and barley crops, but
buyers and sellers are apart In their views
ai to prices.
The local flour market la exceedingly dull
and there Is not much chance for any move
ment until prices are put on a lower basis.
There Is no Intention on the part of millers
to advance prices here and there la not likely
to be any decline In the near future. There
has been considerable Inqi ry from Siberia
for flour, but the buyers named prlcea far
too low to permit of business.

Bidding Up of Minor .Industrials
Does Xot Create Demand for

Ins Issues.
NEW YORK. June 12- The demonstra
tive bidding up in today's market of a
miscellaneous lot of industrial etocka and
specialties not usually conspicuous did not
serve to keen up an effective demand for
the usually active trading stocks. The gen
eral-market waa languid and the tone be
came he airy after the probability of another
targe loan expansion by the banks came
into discussion.-
The large percentage In the increase In
bank clearings this week over the corre
sponding week last year proves due, in
large part, to the New TorkClty figures.
inose ngures for thla year are almost
double those of last year, the increase
reaching nearly a billion. The degree In
which speculation is responsible for the In
crease Is implied in the comparison of this
week's sales at the stock exchange of over
5,000,000 shares of stock and $35,926,000
par value of bonds, with the dealings, for
the week ending June, 12, 1008, when sales
were 1,667,300 shares of stock and $11,
217,000 par value of bonds.
A rise of a uolnt in United States Steel.

tne statement, cutting down the surplus

The etroriEst article In th staple grocery

there. Koahland'a latest bean report says of
the California situation:
Th e eto cH of b eans in San FY and co on
June 1 1 about 105,000 bape, a decrease of
24,000 bags from a month ago. Shipments
out of here during the month of May amount
ed to about 41.000 bags.
The stock on hand at this date Is exceed
lriRly small for this time of the year and
tinder normal conditions there -will be no
beans carried over into the now season. Aside
from pink beans, the wtocks of other varieties
in warehouse here are very light indeed, and
It la more than llkoly that an increased de
mand for pink beans will come because of
, the scarcity of other varieties. This scarcity
Is particularly marked in the cam of white
beau a and Hayos. The price for white beans
has advanced further and is likely to go trtlll
higher, as much the same condition prevails
on this description not only In the Eastern
bean elates, but in Kunpe as well, where
stocks are now practically exhausted, if ths
latrot reports may be credited.
FM'SH OF KERRY SEASON OVER.
Firmer Prices Llkoly to Rule in the Coming

The past week saw tho heaviest part of
the strawberry trade for the year. There
will be a food many berries handled In
the coming week, but prloea are likely to
be firmer. Yesterday's supply was about
. sufficient for the trade's requirements and
good shipping stock was quoted on Front
street at $1.75 2 per craba. Berries sold
at the morning market at $1.24 (3 1.60.
Two cars of apricots are on the way to
Portland and the first is due Tuesday.
There la a good demand for deciduous
fruits, but there are too many small peaches
and cota on the street.
Lemons are higher, the result of a 26 B

" Wallowa Cattle Shipments.
WALLOWA, Or., June 12. (Special.)
Six hundred and thirty head of cattle were
shipped from Wallowa yesterday evening to
Ra Rock, Mont., where they will be turned
on the Bummer range. The cattle were
purchased from John McDonald by Houth
& Day, of Asotin, Wash., and In turn 660
head of cows, heifers, yearlings and calves
were, sold by them to Sales-Jones Co., of
Grange ville, Idaho, and the 70 haad of
2-year-old steers were sold to B. C. Slrgln
son, of Sprague, Idaho. The Grange ville
firm shipped- 700 head from weiser to the
same range.
While the price paid is not given out. It
is generally conceded to have been upwards
of $30 per head on the average, and Is
considerably above the market figure for
such stock. The buyers recognize the value
of Wallowa County stock for range pur
poses and are willing to pay better .prices
for stock that takes- readily- to the range.

whne recognizing the fact that from

to suppose that nations now prosperous

their places among tho?e whose mission

Among English-speaking people It haa
been habitual to predict that the first
modern nation to begin to go down would
be France. This theory was based chiefly
on the fact that the birth rate in recent
years had fallen off rapidly, until
reached a point where deaths were more
numerous than births, but of late the tide
seems to have turned and France Is at
least holding her own.
Possibly no country Is In immediate

conditions there are far from reassuring
and nave been for some years growing
steadily worse. Not only has the birth
rate heavily decreased, but the general
physical condition of the people has great
ly deteriorated. At the time of the Boer
war the physical standard for enlistment
had to be very much lowered in order to
get recruits. Insanity and pauperism have
multiplied ominously, as has chronic and
widespread lack of employment. "With
colossal national debt, the burdens of
the empire grow constantly heavier and
the demands for naval and military es
tablishments greater. To these has been
added the provision for old-age pensions.
