THE SUNDAY OREGONIAN, PORTLAND, JUNE 6, 1909.
MR. VOTER:
Do YOU know that NOT ONE of Portland's daily papers is supporting the McKenna Excise Board
and the Gothenberg Amendments?
Do YOU want to cripple and ruin the magnificent hotels of this city? Do YOU want the tens of thou
sands of visitors coming here from the Seattle exposition to be annoyed at every turn and to go away disgusted?
Do YOU want hundreds of property-owners to suffer heavy loss? Would this benefit YOU?
Do you want YOUR home broken into and searched by officers of the law, at the instance of an enemy
or a crank, on the mere suspicion that you are selling or giving away liquor?
Do you want it made UNLAWFUL for your home supplies to be delivered by a wholesale establishment
as at present?
Do you want the business of Portland DEMORALIZED, and the saloon DRAGGED into politics?
The McKenna act would accomplish ALL these things. It is in answer to no public demand, benefits
noboby, injures business, and SERVES NO MORAL PURPOSE WHATEVER.
It is loaded with FORGED signatures.
Of course you don't want these things to happen.
But if YOU fail to vote "No" on the McKenna Amendment by Marking an X
after 165 it will become law!
MR. VOTER:
Somebody wants an IRON-GLAD MONOPOLY of Portland's LIQUOR BUSINESS. Do you know
who "it" is or "they" are?
Nobody seems to know, but "they" want it anyhow.
"They" call themselves the Gothenberg Association.
The mere NAME means nothing.
Do you know who is BEHIND this association? And if they are responsible?
"They" promise to exercise due diligence that's all. This franchise would be an outright gift of im
mense power to parties absolutely UNKNOWN, who would use it as they saw fit for their own profit, with noth
ing but that elastic term "due diligence" as a brake. For ten years they would have full sway. They ask you
to "try it." Are you willing to try such a dangerous experiment for ten years, and bind the city hand and foot
for that length of time?
The petition is loaded with FORGED signatures.
Is this good policy? Is it good SENSE?
The hotels and grill rooms and the propertyowners would be at the mercy of this
monstrous monopoly.
Who ARE these men? Why do they HIDE?
Don't fail to vote " No" on the Gothenberg Amendment by marking an X after 163
Such measures as these please nobody but their promoters. They injure property
and business, which means that they injure you.
Vote against them.
