New School Demanded. At a mass
meftlnfr held Friday night In Woodlawn
Methodist Episcopal Church, patrons of
the Woodlawn school entered a vigorous
protest apatnst further use of the old
si-hool building, which within the past
year has been successively condemned by
the building Inspector, the Are marshal
and the health department. Some six
years ago the half of a new building was
erected for the use of the district and
the old one moved aside as a. reserve for
emergency purposes. By reason of the
rapid growth of Woodlawn as a resi
dence district It has accommodated the
overflow from the new building from the
beginning, and having become unsafe and
unsanitary, clt:zens are protesting loudly
against the action of the 'Board of Educa
tion in spending money for repairs on the
old structure instead of providing for the
completion of the new. A committee
headed by Councilman Vaughn will wait
on the Board and present a plea for safe
and sanitary provision for the school
children of the community, and another
meeting Is called for Wednesday eve
ning, June 9, to receive the report of
the committee and consider further
action.

A BOOST FOF PORTLAND
Adoption of Modern Conveniences
Means Greater Growth.
Do you want to see the City of Port
land, which now has a quarter of mil
lion people, and which may have half
a million people In ten years, absolute
ly prevented by law from using modern
appliances and inventions? That's
what the amendment to the city char
ter, article IV, chap. - VI, prohibiting
the use of any patented article in any
public improvement in the City of Port
land will accomplish if it is adopted.
It is up to you, the voters of Portland
to say If this amendment offered under
initiative petition shall be adopted.
Think about it and you will make a
cross after the number of the ballot
161, NO.

THE EXCISE BILL.
The Excise Board Amendment, ballot
No. 164, provides for taking the
liquor traffic out of politics by plac
ing its supervision In an Excise Board
instead of the Council. It prohibits
breweries from operating saloons and
selling liquors in competition with the
regular licensed saloonkeeper. It pro
hibits women, chairs and amusements
In saloons. It prohibits hotels and
restaurants from serving liquors in
private rooms and boxes. It prohibits
grills, hotels and restaurants from
serving mixed drinks, such as cock
tails doped with liquor, the stuff the
bad man gives to his girl friend. The
old cry, "It will hurt business," is al
ways set up when you attempt to regu
late the liquor traffic. This amendment.
If adopted, will not hurt the decent
hotel business, the decent restaurant
business nor the orderly saloon busi
ness. If- you want any other proof that
you should vote for the Excise Board
amendment, go any night to the en
trance of some hotel grill between 10
o'clock and 1 o'clock in the morning
observe the number and condition of
the women who come out of that place.
The Oregon grill is conducted by Mr.
Dickinson, who is making the principal
fight against this amendment.
