8 INTEREST IN AUTO RAGES IS GREAT Preparations for Big Event to Be Held June 12 Are Near Complete. . COURSE SMOOTH FOR CARS Irlrers With National I'.rpula(tun to Compete Huge GrandMand Commands View Kntlre Kad. Portland Clnb Is Confident. With only two more weeks remaining until the big automobile rrC to be held during the Rose Festival Saturday. Jun 12. under the auspices of the Portland Automobile Club, take place, interest In these events which has reached National Importance has increased with th ap proach of the date net. The executive committees of the club and the dealers are working diligently every day to make the success of the races such that they will be remembered as the crowning fea ture of the Rose Festival. Nearly all preparations for the race have been completed by the committees of the club and the work on the course which is being done by the countv. is progressing rapidly. The course will be the best probably In America, or perhaps in the world. Nearly the whole course has been gone over with graders and rollers and a layer of crushed rock has been placed on the surface, so that the road is almost as smooth as a billiard table. Oil la now being spread on the surface for the purpose of laying the dust and preventing the surface from being torn up by the speeding machines. The contractors promise this work will be completed In plenty of time for the races. A Krandtand t - V. . .) .1 in An. . - --.v-"j te.iin is being erected beside the one now sta tioned there. It Is the Intention of the management to build seats for the vis itors to extend for lOOrt feet on each side of the course at the finish. Opposite the grandstand a large field has been pro vided for automobiles, and on the same side boxes holding 60 people each are being prepared. The price of these boxes has been placed at tzn each. A number of these have been already engaged and communications for their reservation are being received dally. Admission to the automobile field will be 11 a person In each automobile. To the grandstand. In cluding transportation, the fee will be 11. The grandstand, automobile fields and box-seats are at the start and finish, where a speed of perhaps better than 80 miles an hour will be made. They are so arranged that spectators will have a clear view of the road for several miles. Arrangements have been made that people attending the races will be able to come or to leave at any time, either by machine or on the streetcars at will. Au tomobiles may leave Portland and arrive at the scene of the races by way of Sandy road and then across to Rockwood to the automobile field. This feature for con venience was not at the service of the visitors during the 1308 races. On the morning of June 12 a special car will laye the city with a load of confetti, which will be strewn all along the road, that visitors to the city who do not know the way to the grounda can easily be piloted along the road. The National Guard, which has been secured to patrol the track, will be trans ported In automobiles to the course where they will be the means of pre venting accidents or mishaps to vehicles or individuals not taking part in the races, by keeping a strict watch over the course after 12 o'clock, when the road will be closed to all but the entrants. At least 40 entries will probably be made and the following wellknown makes CTf1"" J" be "Printed: Locomobile. k .. StZlmn- 8ta1l" Daytons. Mitchells. Thomas Flyers. Chalmers De troit. Buicks. Forlv-three new member, were voted In the club Wednesday night at the meeting hMd in the convention hall of thr Com mercial Club. The Portland Automobile club Is an active factor in the Improvement of streets about the city and the means of regulating the possibility of accidents. A l""r aa sent to t.i streetcar company not long ago railing Its attention to the fact that a number of serious accidents were narrowly averted at F-nat Twentieth and Morrison streets, where the road Is In bad shape. It has been stated a. at the atrectcara have been going around the corner at a high rate of speed with out ringing of the bell aa a notice of their progress. The club pointed out to the company that It was impossible for autolsts to s the rlri coming around the corner until the turn had been mane and requested the company to instruct the motormcn to slow down before reach ing the turn. It was also advlmd to put four or six yards of fine crushed rock at the Intersection lines. These methods. It is believed, will prevcrt serious accidents. The city Knglneer has been asked to repair the streets wherever hole, are In evidence and this effort baa met with success. Ka.t Stark wa. In an almost Impassable condition a few weeks ago. and through the efforts of the club In struetlons were given the contractors to repair and grade this portion i,t the street. . Farmers are taking great Interest In the operations of the t'orlland Automo bile flub and at the Inst meetmg two 're voted In as member. They own car. and are naturally Interested in the good road movement a. farmer, are. No opposition so far ha. been experienced In the us- of the roads for the races and In a few cases rural residents are lend ing Cieir ro-operatlon to the movement. They realise the advent of the automobile means Improvement of roads and that Im provement of roads means Increased value of land. A large number purchase I car. lately and a heavy Fall sale of ma chines Is looked for by dealers. After discussing the matter for some time, the City of Portland has derided to purchase an automobile for the use of the Police Department and has awarded the contract to the Studebaker Company. Pending the decision of the etv authori ties in regard to the am-ard Die Ptude baker Company held a machine for the use of the Police Department In case the award should be given It. but In some manner the bid was returned by mistake ..... .mnaing a oeciaion had been made against It. th Ktudebaker Company sold the machine held in reserve. Thursday, however, the company wa. called up by phone and notified of the awarding of the sale. The department will now have to wait until a machine can be .hipped from San Francisco. There are certain large districts of New York, covering an are. larger than all the business district of Portland. In which automobiles are used exclusively aa hre fighting vehicles. . nla has been aecom- ,,,e installation of the lilch pressure water system, which entirely eliminates the necessity of fire engines, and It ts only a matter of time when alt of New Tork will be so protected. In fact, it Is predicted all cities will have this system, for It is said to be io per cent more economical and much more ef ficient than the old system. There will be no mad galloping of horses three abreaat. no clanging of bells or shriek of whistles. Instead, a number of auto mobiles will be seen with their long reel, wound with hose, silently but swirtly riylng to the destination and reaching It In less than half ne time required by the horse-drawn vehicle.
