HOLD REGATTA.
WILL
At 2:30 This Afternoon Boats Will
Sail Over Course From Clubhouse
to 3fadIson-Street Bridge.
Bailors will be out this afternoon for
the opening of the yarning season and a
regatta w ll be held on the river. At
J 30 o'clock the yachts will start from the
1 clubhouse at The Oaks for the first race
of the season. The count will extend
to the Madison-street bridge and return.
Instead of holding the races according
to length and classes, a handicap race
mill be held. This is because lack of time
In which to rig the yachts has precluded
a large list of entries. Kew sails have
been sent for and some of these have
lot yet arrived. Hoover, a number of
the boats have been given a fresh coat
of paint so as to make as good an ap
pearance aa possible.
The following boats have been entered:
Comet, owned by Lee Wells; Ftore'n'aft.
owned by H. F. Todd; Dancin' Sal. owned
by Francis D'Arcy; Fliblnite. Charles
Clansy. whose skipper will be Connie
Balsam: Jewell, owned by Max Meyers,
and probably the Terrier, owned by J. E.
Backenstoas. The Mischief, owned by
Commodore Foster, will -not be entered
as Intended on account of an Illness In
the family. Kxtenslve preparations are
Veins; mails for the season by the new

Big Tourney of Ball-Hollers Opens
at Seattle Pavilion.
SEATTLE, Wash, May . With a
large attendance of enthusiastic bowl
ers from all parts of the West tbe
third annual tournament of the West
ern Bowling Congress opened here to
night at the Madison Park pavilion.
Following a programme consisting of
welcoming addresses and responses by
city officials and others. Mayor John
F. Miller rolled the first ball and the
nine days' tournament was on.
None but local teams were scheduled
for tonight's events, the big events,
consisting of several entries from Den
ver. Salt Lake City. San Francisco and
Portland being scheduled for later In
the tournament.
TRAVIS WIXS IV 71 STROKES
Captures Metropolitan Golf Cham
pionship for Third Time.
RYE, N. T May 2. In a splendidly
played game In which he equalled the
local amateur record of 71 strokes for
the course, Walter J. Travis, of Garden
City. L. I- defeated Fred Herreschoff.
of Westbrook. L. L. today. In the finals
for the eleventh annual metropolitan
golf championship., thereby capturing
the title of metropolitan champion. He
has captured the title twice heretofore.
He finished the 30 holes today with
three up and two to go.

Shattuck Grammar School, with a
score of J points, came out victor yes
terday afternoon In the annual gram
mar school Beld day. held under the
direction of the Grammar School
League, of wMch I'rofessur Itnbert
Krohn Is president, on Multnomah Field.
Monlavtlla was a close second with
2S points and Stephens came third with
It. while Ho!l(l)f ran up IS points.
North Central and Kema each secured
six points and Portsmouth and Irvlng-
ton eacn scored three points. Haw
thorne. Ljadd. Arlet. Highland and
Couch each won a third place, counting
one point eat-h. while South Mount
TDor. ood!awn. runnalde and Ver
non were not fortunate enough to se
cure a point.
Younesters of all slies and ages took
part In the meet, but most tf the points
were naturally won by the larger pu
pils. Some promising material for
future athletes was In evidence. Al
though young In years, a number of
the boys were large for their age and
good records were mad. Hummel, of
the Shattuck school, who won the vic
tory fur Ms school as well as
winning the Individual gold medal
offered for tne student making the most
points, did notices lie work. He took
three firsts and one second and one
third for his school, making 19 points
In alL Hummel is 1 years old.
Hot Pace la Half-Mlle.
Another strong point-winner was
Klllott for Stephens, who won two flrwte
and a second, scoring 11 points. lie
won the half-mile race, which was per
haps Die mo.t exiting race of the
afternoon. This was entered by 1 con
testants, the faster of whom started
out al a terrific pace for boys of their
age. In the latter part of the second
lap the runners were strung out. Cross,
for Kerns. In the lead. As they nee red
the goal Elliott crawled up on Gross,
who mas putting forth every effort,
and passed him by an Inch or two as
the tape was crossed.
The relay rare mas also an Interest
ing reature. Seventeen schools were
entered In this event, four laps being
run. Two heats were run owing to the
numher entered and the three winners
or the first heat entered the second.
This was done to eliminate the delay
necessary In running out three heats.
In the first heat Stephens. Hawthorne
and North Central won first, second
and third respectively. In the second
heat the m-inners of, the first heat were
given the Inside of the track as a
handicap, but Montavllla. Irvlngton
and tihattuek took first, second and
thlrdj-espectlvely received a handsome
cup for winning this prize.
Stephens started strong and was well
In the lead until the last 100 yards of
the race, when It Is said on turning the
corner an Irvlngton runner either
tripped or spiked one of the Stephens
men. causing him to fall and lose the
advantage gained. The Judges, how
ever, did not see the accident and
after a discussion the result was al
lowed to stand as made.
A large crowd of eager boys and girls
of every age swarmed In the grand
stand, together with their teachers and
