near Jump-Off-Joe Creek, now Merlin.
We heard here that the Indiana had
made a raid on the mines at the mouth
of the flallne Creek, this news be in
brought by a courier, who had managed
to get through. A detail of 14 men was
aent to their relief, leaving Jump-Off -Joe
at 12 o'clock on the night of October II.
I was In this detail.
"We arrived at Galwc Creek at dusk the
next day and found 30 men aad one wo
man (Mrs. Plckettt In a spill-board house.
w hich they had Intrenched by throw Ins
up earthworks on the Inside and digging
trenches to the outside for protection
when firing, one man iPlcketti was dead
and 12 others wounded. The Indiana had
withdrawn after riddling the house with
bullets. The next morning Major Fttx-
gerald arrived with a company of regu-
ar troops and took the wounded to Jack
sonville. Our detsll returned to Jump-

Cow Creek to se about our cattle and
outfit.
I' pun our arrival at rim us s pla-e we
found the settlers congrrstated there f ir
protection, and went on to Dan Levins"
farm, finding our cattle and wagons all
right. Returning to Smith's we found the
place besieged and Johnson's horse waa
killed as we dismounted. That night
Johnson, myself and another man crept
through the lines., returning to Levins',
reaching thre without mishap. There
is at tliis place 12 men and about the
same number of women, imnut whom
were Rev. J. W. Miller, now of Portland,
and h,s wife.
The next morning, seeing smoke In the
direction of Smlta's place, four of us
Charles Johnson. Alexander Abbott.
Stephen ilinot and myself started for
the top of the Intervening ridge, about
half a mile dlatant. to reronnoiter. When
we got within ards of the top of the
ridge, snout M Indiana jumped out from
behind trees and fired on us at close
range, wounding Minot In the body. We
started back. Abbott and 1 carrying Mi
not and Johnson covering our retreat, and
in dolnc this Johnson sacrificed his life.
We had gone In this way about ) yards
when we saw a party had started from
the house with a horse for the wounded
man. Tha Indians were following and
firing continuously. Just at thie t(me
Johnson fell, shot through the head, and

scalped and mutilaled Johnson's body.
The siege of the Lewis house ithen Ml-

days. We fought them off until Hie bal

Widow Nldsy's place to our relief. Dur
ing t.na time it was flgrittr4C all the time
and eternal vigilance to prevent the In
clans from firing the bouse with flaming
arrows, which they shot from under the
creek bank. We never could tell ho
many Indians were killed, aa they alwas
