TOO MANY SMALL DEALERS Men Who Do Business With Pencil : and Paper Pad Said to Be Del v riment to Trade Move to Fix rp Streets. BT JOHN J. HARRIfON. With a record for the wk of 345 dif ferent pieces of realty transfered on the "book of the County Clerk, carrying val uations of $474,521. there should be a fairly rood feeling- In the market, for most of these transfers mean commissions to italerm. Of course tll.iriO distributed seem to be little reason why they should not get relief. -. . On the streets skirting the hills to the westward and south, much activity Is no ticeable in the building of aparrment houscs. There has ben no week for several months when from two to more build:ngs have not been started In these districts to be devoted to apartments- A marked Improvement in the class - of buildings Is also apparent. On upper Washington and Intersecting streets there are several brick nouses now under course of construction that mould be a credit to any city. This movement tomard erecting big apartment-houres. which It might be thought would have a decided effect on the number of s:r.g!e dwellings going up. does not seem to do so. for the -number of n-w buildings going up all over the city shorn no signs of diminishing. A course of m-hlte terra cotta at the second story of the Y. M. C. A. building has given that structure an Indication of what Is to be expected when It Is fin ished. The first story brick facing Is In place and with the addltlen of the glased white course. It begins to have a decid edly line appearance. The butldlrg will be a credit to Portland. There were few deals made during the week that involved large amounts, the more important being in acreage In the vicinity of Portland. The time has come when buyers prefer suburban to Inxirie property, and farm lands on the lines of electric and steam roads within reason able distance of the city are being taken up rapidly and cut up Into small tracts. These seem to be m-re attractive to in vestors at the .present time than almost any other class of realty. Of course, the platted tracts, nearer in are still being sold off at a remarkable rate and it would seem that the records of the last two years are to bo surpassed this year In the number of lots taken by prospective builders of dwellings. Bfiildtng continues In these tracts at a rate that surprises everybody that visits the suburbs. Of the WO permits Issued last week for new buildings the greater number were for houses in the newly-pla,tted districts of the city. The total valuations for tms 100 permits amounted to .'C6.2. making the total for the month 797.61S- There are two or three large permits about ready to be taken out that will swell the month's business considerably over !). OOrt. An effort is being made by the street department to nx up downtown thorough fares before the coming Rose . Festival. Patchwork is being prosecuted In the cen tral business districts, but at the same time there are a number of principal streets that appear to be overlooked en tirely. Burnside. tor Instance, is In a de plorable shape. It is the expressed hope all over town that the city's ire.ts be made as presentable, as possible before the Festival brings in vast crowds of visitors. Unfortunately, many of the principal streets will of necefalty be torn up by the lighting company, but as tlutt work means taking down wires and leveling poles that now disngure the streets, residents are content to put up with the temporary Inconvenience in the contemplation of cleared streets when the underground work is finished. One of the recent visitors to Portland, upon learning that bonds had been voted to replace' the Madison bridge and that the City Council -had done nothing for months toward doing the work they had been ordered to do by vote of the people, said: "What sort of public opinion have you people, anyway? Why. we wouldn't stand for that sort of thing back Kast for another day. If your Councjlmen de cline to obey the mandate of the cltisens. why do you not get rid of them? I am told the closing of that bridge is not only a great lnconveniem-c to residents of the other side of the river, but Is a positive factor in hurting realty values on both sides. I think If I ere a resilient of Portland I should be inclined to take ad vantage of the recall privilege which I understand you have in this state. At any rate. I am surprised that a few pro gressive citizens do not g.-t together and demand that something be done Imtnc-diately." Work for Summer Laid Out at Sec ond Business Meeting Sixteen Families Join Plan. The Country Homes Association held Its second " business jneetlng Friday evening at the residence of O. F. Phil lips. AO East Thlrty-nrst street. Thla organization having confidence in Greater Portland, has purchased a fio acre beautifully wooded tract from Os burn Bros., on the lines of the O. It- A N. and O. W. P.' and facing on the Sandy road, near Falrvlew, naming It Osburn Park. There are I families tn the association, the objects of which are the mutual interests of the mem bers and the systematic development of the park. Work was laid out for the Summer and committees appointed on drives, entertainment and streetcars. The streetcar committee was Instructed to pledge the entire support of the asso ciation to any effort that is being mad to secure the extension of the. Hose City Park carllne on out the Sandy road to Falrvlew. There are no lots for sale in this tract, and as it - Is reached by both electric and steam lines, it la very de sirable. The soli Is rich loam, free, from all gravel,nd watered by a great spring of pure cold water, while the surrounding view Is magnificent. The association is clearing up the park, putting out gardens and fruit, and erecting cottages for the week end and Summer use. and as soon as elec tric service Is extended on the. Sandy road, many of the members will make this their permanent residence. The officers of the association are: President. A. O. lfughon: secretary. Ir. Kittle plummer Graf. The next meet Ing of the association will be held at the park as a Fourth of July picnic WOODMEN TO HONOR DEAD Memorial Service Will Itc Held Next Sunday Night.
