Fish Ladder Proves Great Aid to Salmon in Climbing Up Falls Stock of Fish in Upper River Attests Value of Aid Stat Hu Rendered to King of Fishes is Willamette. - r I r V .. - ' ' V ! 4 - , . e- " v, . i Pi.' T. r : : i : I T I f I : t i AI.MO. A.CKXniG FTH I.tnnKR AT FALLS OF WILLAtieTTE, BT WALTER F. BACKUS. There are i.mci when most every one has the blues; when every task eem as big as a mountain and all obstacles appear insurmountable. We 11 have such spells. The next time you think that the whole world is bucking: you take a trip to Oregon City and watch the noble Chinook salmon trylns; to ascend the fish lad der over Willamette Falls. If the sig-ht of their insistent, never-ceasing: struggle does not prove a, positive In spiration then I miss my guess. From the time the salmon leaves the ocean In answer to nature's call his life is one continual fight for ex istence. His first entry In fresh water is greeted with hundreds of glllnets with their cruel waiting meshes. If be Is successful In circumventing these wide-armed monsters and seeks the quiet water away from the channel, he finds a wilderness of salmon traps ready to receive him. Should he seek short rest on the sunlit san bars further up the river, he suddenly finds almself in seine, whoie length and lepth seems interminable. Pitfalls on Every side. .Pernps the salmon Is fortunate inough to escape these pitfalls and continues on up the river. Ills journey then becomes a veritable game of hide and seek m-lth drifting glllnets. with an occasional fish wheel to relieve the monotony. By tbe time he finally reaches Willamette Falls and resists the lure of a score of flashing salmon spoons, he has become a veteran in the full sense of the word. A thorough npftion of the water finally ends In his reaching the pool at the fool of the !! Iaddr. a ro'ind. rock-ribbed pool some So feet In diameter. Its up per portion a boiling, foaming mass of white water, where the overflow rnmti tumbling down in from an eight-foot drop. Like a flight of rockets a continual procession of fish hurl themselves into the fulling water. Tn. 1 h. :o-pound-r leap hlKh Into the overwhelming flood; now a tiny silver flash as a little three pounder makes his Jump; then a mighty splash as a huge 40-pounder makes a clumsy try and Is thrown bar-k all In a heap. In the clear water at the fot of the pool can b seen scores of res:ti.g Sal mon. Nearly every third fish shows the marks of aglllnet around his middle; others have their dorsal fins or their nosea badly bruised. In some cases the top of the head Is one large bloody wound like a red badge of courage. But each and every one has the asm Indomitable fighting spirit; get over at any cost. The foaming mater makes their Jumps a matter of gueaswork. they cannot where they are lumping to. hnm'llmpi a big one will fly straight at the rocky wall, striking his bleeding nose a most resounding smack: another will leap sideways, land clear up on the bouldera. and after much frantic flopping finally regain the water. But they do g -t over. A well-directed leap will land the fish Just at the brink, where a few srenuoua movements will put him safely over. Salmon Ieap Seven Time. Not long ago 1 saw a SO-pound fish, whose dorsal fin was nearly cut off. make a grand leap, only to fall on the harp stones bordering the pool. After a few minutes the same flan made another try. with the same result. Hlx times 1 saw that brae fellow rise at the falling water, only to be thrown, bruised and gasping, back Into the boil ing pool. Then out be came again, straight Into the center, hung for an in stant on the very edge, and scurried over like a frightened rat. Surely such persistence should .leach man to laugh at the ordinary obstacles of everyday Tnle first leap Is on'y a Hrglnntr.g. fr there are more, though not as d:tt cu'.t. Home years ago the state appro priated mony for the building of the n!l ladder A J-ri.-s of steps mere bleated out of the solid rn and Die stater goes tearing through like a mountain cascade. The lengTh of the lad!T Is probably riot over .feet and the total fall nearly feet. At times every si. p In the ladder Is llieraily crowded with salmon; tln-jr wedge In so close that every movement of t!:e mars forces1 several neh bj. k Into the current. In eplle of Its dlfT'ctllttes. the ladder Is a siicre. Reports from the Hani lam and MrKrnxie Ilivers stale that there are more salmon In those streams than at any time In I e pjist ten ears. And what is the salmon's reward for his matcMeM djpUy of courage? it Is summed tip in fcne word death; a lonely, lingering death In some far-off mountain st rr a in.
