X PETRAIX. Chief Kddie Plnnance. Manager Casey's copper-huett native twirler, wu the huge mystery to the Aberdeen Black Cats at the Vaughn street lots yesterday afternoon, and backed up by fine fielding; on the part of his team mates, the Indian blanked the felines, while Portland scored four runs off Cooney Starkell. It really was a fine same of base ball, for both teams played. In sena tlonal fashion, especially Plnnance, Cooncy and Mullln, each of whom pulled off grandstand- plays at critical times. Portland's win yesterday made five victories out of six games played. Plnnance was surely a riddle. Only three hits were collected off the Indian) twirler, two of which are credited to Johnny Carr because he beat out that number of infield taps, while the other was a good healthy single collected by Sheldon Lejeune. who got back Into the frame as outfielder after several days' absence, except for an attempt at pitch ing made Friday. Bassey Makes First Score. Starkell held Portland runlesa for three Innings but In the fourth. "Count" Bassey started things by lacing one to right which got by Campbell and went for a three-ply-smash. Mullln's effort was a line drive grabbed by "Ginger" Jack Herbert, a specialist in this art. and Bassey had to hurry to keep from being doubled, as was Casey on a simi lar smash to that gentleman by Cooney. However, Garry, or more correctly writ ing. Garibaldi, sent a long fly to Camp bell, which acted In the nature of a sacrifice hit, for Bassey romped home with the first run of the engagement. Portland's second run was acquired by virtue of some startling hase .run ning on the part of Phil Cooney. With Casey stowed away on ice, Phil singled over second, and promptly stole the mid-station. After telegraphing what be intended, to do, he stole third also, which was one of the moat daring feats In base-running seen here for some time. The little shortstop then wound up bis performance by scop ing on Baaaey's short fly to Carn. who bad been playing in and ran back to make the catch. Carr did Just what Cooney figured he would do throw wild to the plate, and Phil scored easily. In the seventh. Garry opened with a single. Adama sacrificed. Garry going all the way to third. Herbert contribut ed an error but Garry held third, and -Pinch-Hitter" Tom Murray made good with a safe drive, on which Garry tap ped the pan. Plnnance Keeps His Bead. The fourth run for the home club resulted from a pass to Mullln. and Infield hits by Adams and Murphy, which filled the bases. Etarkell then stuck a wild pitch on the card, Mullln scoring. Carr opened the ninth Inning for Aberdeen with a safe hit to the in Jleld. Despite this handicap, Plnnance was not the least feaxed and pitched the game out without the runner ad vancing any farther than the first sack. The "Chief was all to the good and bis pitching was easily a bright fea ture of the contest. "Red" Mullln pulled down several high throws with one band, besides scooping one or two out of the dirt, and otherwise distinguished himself, whll Phil Cooneys all-around work was highly pleasing to Mike Don lln. who picks him aa the best short- atop be has seen this season. Torn Beaton will pitch the final game against ADeraeen In this series, which will be played this afternoon, and Man ager Rowland will use Wilder or Solver lor Aberdeen. Casey's team Is playing great ball these days and a big crowd should be out this afternoon. The official score of the game Is as louows: Score of Game. ABERDEEN. AB. R. H. PO. A. E.
