THE SUNDAY OTtEGOXIAX. PORTLAND. MAY lfi. 1XW. WAT Tm AXP FAIR MEAMS TO IT WILL ATTRACT GENUINE SETTLERS BY THE TKOU5AND5 : NEVER 30 GREAT A DEMAND FOR INFORMATION BT WILLIAM IL RATMOXD. Taking- it on the word of James J. JTJli, the total of admissions to the 'Alaska-Yukon -will not be the true tent f the value of the advertising which fcas come out of the exposition project. Admitting1 the same authority, the ag firegrate of the benefits to accrue from Che efforts of the publicity bureau, from personal letter campaigns, through the ca-o Deration of railroad pas.vncr de partmerts and by virtue of various ther effective sources, will not be , known until the returns from the next census are In hand. "Written Into words of one syitahle, it Is the opinion of Mr. Hill that settlers, siet sightseers, are being; attracted Into ghe Northwest by the hubbub attendant upon Seattle's rather ambitious enter prise; that the Impression created has been, not that the Northwest Is a good region to see, but that it is a good place to live. In this idea of .the case there are many experts in traffic who are In ac cord with Mr. Hill. Turing the last three months the passenger traffic man ager of every railroad system having . way Into the Northwest has visited this end of the line for purposes of per sonal inspection. Karly It became a matter no longer to be left to subordi nates. Demand for intimate Informa tion upon the Northwest was at the flood and the question of handling the Indicated traffic had become a problem t.o be solved only by the higher-ups. T. S. Kustis. passenger traffic man ager of the Chicago. Burlington Ac Quincy, was one of these. "Tou are to have a very beautiful lit tle exposition," said Mr. Kustls. "but your city will make good. Tou do not realize the crowd that Is coming Into the Northwest, and you will not be able to handle it. There has never been such a demand for information upon any event or region as there is now upon the Northwest and your fair. Much of it is coming from persons who ask for colonist or one-way excursion rates. They are colonists, and of high class, and round-trip tickets do not interest them. Seattle is confronted by a prob lem, and the transcontinental railroads which have terminals here also have a riddle to solve. We are already prac tically at the limit of our prospective carrying capacity." The significance Is not so much in Mr. jCustls' statement as in the fact that JUr. Kustls has under way traffic ar rangements on a. scale which corre fe ponds with the size of his opinions. - a The Hill system that is to say, the Iorthern Pacific and Great Northern has sent out over the Associated Press an official estimate of the traffic bound Northwest through St. Paul alone dur ing the exposition period. The est! mate is that not less than 1,000,000 persons will be handled through the Minnesota, gateway. This prospective traffic is divided -400.000 each to the Great Northern and Northern Pacific and 200.000 to the Chicago, Milwaukee A St. Paul. Even here in Seattle, which It must be admitted Is somewhat given to pluming Itself, this estimate sounds large. It sounds, in fact, a good bit to the "press gent." Yet H Is a fact that the esti mate comes, not from the railroads ad vertiPing departments but from their operating departments and those divisions re framing up on the basis announced. The three lines named and the Burling ton and the Union Pacific have thus early ceased contracting or special trains north west bound during the exposition period They.givc as their reason that they can Dot afford to jeopardize their facUitlei tor handling regular traffic by tying up anv given amount of rolling stock for exclusive or c pedal service. Ii would be very flattering indeed. If the promoters of the Alaska-Yukon-Pa-cl.io Exposition could say justly that the exposition, solely, had brought about tae very large and portentous coudi tlons. it would. In a way. embalm nuiiiy a reputation in lavender; a sple;.did rentage for posterity." in certain famTTy divisions, and a lot of stuff like that, but St cannot be sa'.d. The best that the Alaska-Yukon-Pa cific KxpositJon can claim to be is a "ton trioutins cause." It is the great big ex position tnat the Northwest has always on tap an exposition of Just about the oipgcst resources that the world has to offer, assembled by the Almighty and no WITH THE BT B. A. TO him alio likes to pit his cunning and skill against the intelligence of the elusive trout, there la no better stream In Oregon, or the West, than tha IVeoanictim. Mere every variety of those finny beauties abounds; here the pisca torial artist may enjoy a day's sport un excelled by the royal pleasures of the crowned nionarchs of the world, and for which many of them would give half of their Kingdoms. A day's whipping of this famous stream mill do more to put the anaemic blood of the desk slave into active circulation than weeks of Idle strolling along the beach or listening to tLe gossip of the street. The fame of the Necanicum as a trout stream is attested by the fact that men of every calling from all parts of the state are to be found meandering its banks and whipping its riffles and pools during the Summer; even "Winter does not daunt them. In the Itst are mer chant, lawyers, doctors, denthtts. editors and teachers, each eager to make a rec ord for himself which will place him on a par with Isaak Walton.
