Ike Butler, a former Portland Pacific Coast League twlrler. made his first appearance In this city yesterday since the McCredles allowed him to pass elsewhere, and had Ike been accorded good support In that first inning, he would have succeeded In plastering on the whitewash liberally. As It was. Tacoma hit Pinnance hard and often, yet the Tigers were able to secure no great advantage until the ninth Inning, when they chased over three runs liv ing Butler the best of a 5 to 1 decision ! - nuiriuiB unuer rean Casey. While a defeat usually looks bad for a home team, yesterday's game was far from being uninteresting, simply be cause Casey's boys, while they were unable to do anything with Butler, played great ball In the field. Grand stand plays were pulled off In large bunches, with two double plays and a speedy triple play. Tacoma also offi ciated in a double play, which the offi cial scorer forgetfully overlooks. All these fielding stunts served to help both pitchers out of holes. Casey Gets Only Run. Suess walked as first man up for Ta coma. and when Cartwright fanned. Murray doubled Suess at second. In Portland's half of the first Inning. Casey walked. Cooney popped a fly to Bender In trying to sacrifice, and Bassey sin gled sharply to right. Mullln bunted and Bender heaved badly to Hurley, allowing Casey to score Portland's only run. Tacoma tied It up In the third on But ler's hit, a pass to Cartwright and Hurley's single to center. Then the . Tigers took the lead In the seventh. Kippert opened the Inning with a hit. Swain bunted and Murray erred In fielding the ball, both being safe. Cla flln sacrificed them along, and, with Breslno at bat. Kippert was caught off third. While the Portland players were running him down. Swain came up from second and occupied the bag. Kip dodged successfully, and arrived safely - back at third, which put two runners on the sack. Umpire FMynn here con tributed an erring decision by calling Kippert out. and allowing Swain the bag. whereas his ruling should have been the other way. However, the rul ing hardly made any difference, for Bresino's tap eluded Casey, and Swain icored. First Triple or Season Made. In the eighth Suess singled to center, and Cartwright was safe on Cooney's error. Wild Bill Hurley was slated for a sacrifice, but his effort was a sharp liner to Pinnance. who whipped the ball to first, getting Cartwright. Then Mullin's speedy throw to Casey at sec ond retired Suess before he could get hack, and the first triple play of the season was recorded. It was great fielding, and the fair sized crowd showed its appreciation by applauding liberally. It was too bad this crack play should have gone for naught, but Pinnance weakened in the ninth, and with one man down, Kippert and Swain laced out doubles In succession, while Claflln and Breslno singled, allowing two runs. Butler was out. making the second man. but Suess and Cartwright walked, the latter's pass forcing In Claflln and mak ing Taeoma's total five. In Portland's half the Colts were helpless and went out In order, ending the game. The series with Tacoma now stands 3 to 2 In Portland's favor, and In order to cinch the series. Big Eddie Klnsella will work against Jesse Baker today. The official score. "Old Reliable' :ke lMUer proved thn: he Is not wrongly christened, for he pitched about as nice a game as anv one would care to see. Ike allowed only four hits and should have had a shut out. That triple play yesterday reminded a few of the hopefuls of the famoua un assisted triple pulled off by Larry Schlafley In 1905. It was nice work, and ahows that Casey has a live field ing team. a a In the third inning Fhll Cooney tried a daring piece of base runlng. for ha tried to go from first to third on Bassey's tap to Breslno. but Bill Hurley tossed him out at tnlrd. a Billy Staton played a fine game at third base, taking six chances without a skip. This hard-working lltttV player Is Improving every day. He Is hitting fairly well. too. Bill Hurley waa so anxious to field a foul ball yesterday that ha ran Into Bender, who made the catch. The Indian la a faith ful worker and can be relied upon to do his best. The Tacoma team seemed to hava more life than ever yesterday, and that with a crippled team, for Big Swain played second, and Pitcher Claflln cov ered left field like a veteran outfielder. a Fred Adama made his debut In a Portland ynlform yesterday, and man aged to scrape out one hit off Butler In three trials, but had no chances In' the outfield. On the 'arrival of Adams. Casey re leased Swanton and Catcher Troeh waa also given the blue envelope. Both players expect to gel on with the In termountain League. a Catcher Tom Murray kept the Tlgera glued to the aacks yesterday, for those that tried to steal on him found tha experiment costly.. However, they did not need to take chances for hits came at regular intervals. Russ Hall is anxious, to get Dolly Gray, the coach of the "Columbia Uni versity team, to play second base for Tacoma during the Incapacity of Mack In. Russ needs somebody and haa been trying to locate Gray. a San Francisco won a close game from Oakland yesterday, but the Athenians are to be commended for putting up a fight arainst such odds.
