entailing- a loss of $40,000. today
almost completely destrnved the -Man.

work of volunteers, who assisted the
recular-flre department, was the fire

As a roguit of tne conflagration,
which lasted more than four hours,
sensational developments are expected.
A fire was discovered In the basement
of the building two hours before the
last alarm was turned in. Mallrxnci
ftored In a second-hand store were
naming at that time. The blaze was
quenched, no sparks being left to start
another flre. declares the fire chief. The
last fire, which destroyed the building,
.started In the same pile of mattresses.
An investigation is being made.
A fire in the residence district of
Reno early this morning almost totally
destroyed one residence, badly scorched
another and burned three people so
badly that they are now In the hospital.
The wind, which has been blowing at a
high rate for the past 24 hours ren
dered the playing of water on both Ares
almost Impossible.
Those seriously burned were: Mra.
Kred Robinson and her 7-year-old son
and w. F. Sickles, who were on fire
escapes on the second floor and were
obliged to rush down a blazing stairs-ay.

by the issuance of a marriage license
by Iieputy County Auditor Claude F.
Case, to Masao Kuky. aged 14. and
May me Jeffrey, aged 21. both of Hen
ver. Colo.
Mr. Kuky U a native son of Japan,
comlnjr to this country some six years
ago. Miss Jeffrey is a native-born
daughter of America. The two have
bepn residents or Ijenver. where they
met and learned to love each, other.
Kuky Is well educated and has held
positions of trust In several large In
stitutions, notably a bank In Colorado
The coupie arrived In Seattle this morn
ing and Immediately repaired to the
County Auditor's office where they
made application for a license.
There are now eight Japanese-American
couples living at Bellevue.
MINERS INDORSE STRIKE

Violence Occurs at Butte.
BUTTE. Mont.. May IS. The Ked
I-odge Coal Miners' I'nion. next to the
biggest miners' union and probably the
trongest labor organlaxtion in the
state, today Indorsed the striking
brewery workers In this city. The
Suite Hands' I'nion also Indorsed the
strikers.
By the departure of Charles If.
Moyer. president of the Western Feder
ation of Miners, for tfenver tonight. It
was stated that the question of the
stiklng brewery workers would be car
ried to the headquarters of the miners
organization for solution.
A number of acta of violence marked
the strike today, one driver being
beaten. Beer wagon drivers were also
harassed by havlr; the harness of
the teams cut.
INJURIES CAUSE OF DEATH

John J. Schleischer. a car reiairer In
the employ of the O. It. & N. Co., was
run ovr and had both legs cut off at the
knee last night at 10 o'clock at Ewdson.
a flag station about ten miles from
Portland. He died an hour later as he
was beir.g transferred from the Red
Cross ambulance to St. Vincent's He
p'tal. Ir. Frank M. Taylor, who had
been called, found the man lifeless and
ordered the remains removed to the un
dertaking establishment of Dunning. Mo
entea at Oilbeuah. where they are now
in charge of the Coroner.
A rellow workman of Schleischer said
no one had seen the accident but that
'hlelscher had been run over by a
passing train. His address is given as
tlraham street, and he is said to have
relatives in this cltv.
HAY TO PICK TRIAL JUDGE

SPOKANE. May 15. The five Judge of
the Superior Court of Spokane County
have requested Uoverror M. E. Hay to
elect the judge who shall p reel do over
the trial of M. J. Gordon, former chief
Justice of the atate Supreme Court, now
charged with embezzlement of funds
from the Great Northern Railway.
They ask that a Judge from some other
county be appointed. Governor Hay has
promised to make the selection. The
case is expected to come up for trial
here In June.

It has been put on In Portland with the
assistance of some of her associates In
the Baker company before a private audi
ence and the verd'.-t was favorable.
The comedy calls for only three, part
two women and one man. It nu In
tended to produce the sketch at the ben
efit performance for the Rose Festival,
but It was withdrawn, and la on Hie pro
gramme for another beneitl to be given In
short time.
Miss Kent said last nlsht that after
three years' study of new parts sue felt In
presenting a short comedy in which ehe la
to be the leading character she would ac

for a time of constant etudy and would
be doing something to make her namo
known over the country, as it It once was

a crowded house Hood Rlvrr amateur
Thespians last night gave a minstrel and
vaudeville performance In the Opera
bouse for the ber.ent of the free library
fund. The performance was given under
the auspices of the Woman's Club. The
Woman's Club at Hood River has Insti
tuted an active campaign for civic Im
provements here recently, and among
other things has tskt n up the matter of
Improving the Courthouse grounds. Hue
eessful In this, they are now endeavoring
to secure funds for a free library for the
city.
