ALCOHOL IS CONDEMNED AS A MEDICINE
St. Louis Medical Fortnightly.
We nave offered our readers occasional
comment on the employment of alcoholic
liquors, both as Individuals and as phy
sicians administering it . to others, we
felt rather alone In the matter until we
ran on to some remarks in the Alienist
nd Neurologist which show that Its able
editor is also studying the problem and
has caught the editors of the New York
State Journal and tho Maryland Medical
Journal similarly occupied.
Dr. Hughes states that the New York
State Journal attributes to the profes
sion a. knowledge of how little use alcohol
Is In the sickroom, but with having failed
to give the public tho benefit of our
knowledge.
"We have steadily diminished the
amount of alcohol used in our hospital
wards until it has become almost obso
lete as an internal remedy;. but still the
public has- continued to judge the medi
cal profession's attitude toward alcohol
by the copious prescribing of it in the
past and by what it sees of the doctor's
habits at his club. So far as the public
knows alcohol Is still approved by the
medical profession. It is time to set
the public straight In this matter: and
if we have not agreed to cast it out en
tirely, much good would come if the pub
lic could know that it is now but com
paratively little used as a medicine. The
practical layman will understand the
meaning of the fact when wo tell him
that In the last 25 years the medicinal
use of alcohol has decreased more than
75 per cent. A remedy which ia being
eliminated at this rate is approaching its
end.
"The tide of scientific knowledge is
against, the use of this poison as a bev
erage and In too frequent prescription
Time was even 'when drunkenness in a
doctor was considered a minor fault, old
Dr. X had more sense when drunk than
all the other doctors sober,' was a fre
quent comment, notes the editor of the
Maryland Medical Journal. 'This is now
a tiling of the oast.'
"It Is a pathogenic agent and as such
Is not a fit daily beverage for any one
