One morning: Cynthianna,
Seated on the nursery floor,
Was entertaining royally,
With dignity galore,
A most exclusive gathering,
For dolls of high degree
Were by special invitation
Assembled therefor tea.
"Pshaw!" cried Cynthianna, .
"Tea parties may be fun,
But this especial function
Is a dreadful stupid one.
These dolls are all so helpless,
Not one of them can talk. ,
I wish I had a plaything
That could jump, and climb, and, walk
Count Giuseppi Vermicelli
Plodded slowly up the street
On his back a barrel organ r
With a repertoire complete
Of classic rag-time ditties,
The atmosphere to wreck,
And his monkey, Garibaldi,
Clinging fondly to his neck.
Spying Cynthianna
At the window. looking down, .
He started up the organ
And beat out "Jungle Town.1
Then the "Merry Widow" waltzes
And other melodies
Were loosened from their moorings
And wafted on the breeze.
Garibaldi knew his business,
And it wasn't long until ,
He landed with his tin cup "
On the. nursery window sill.
Cynthianna danced with pleasure,'
Introduced him le.ft and right, '
Then filled him, up with sponge cake
'Til his little vest was tight. -
She treated him so cordiallv
He gladly would have stayed,
But a cord about his neck
His lack of liberty betrayed.
The monkey's brain was puzzled
How his hostess he should thank,
So he dropped his store of pennies
into L.ynthianna s bank.
Pr i 1
What was -done to Garibaldi
It would never do to tell,
And to draw a veil across the scene
That followed would be well.
To own a monkey full of cake
Was scanty recompense
For increasing Cynthia4s bank account
By forty-seyen cents.
