Smith grappled with him for a while,
getting the worst of the deal until Louch
fell to the sidewalk. Seeing that he waa
drunk. Smith allowed him to get up and
go away. Soon, however, Louch came
back and started to advance toward the
machine. When he was within striking
distance. Smith turned loose with a swift
right punch that broke the flesh on
Louch'B face, knocking him to the
ground, his head striking the sidewalk
with such force that he was unconscious
for a few minutes. The stricken man
was taken Into the Griffin saloon, on
Sixth street, in front of which the trouble
occurred, and his inlurles were , washer!

Wood will address the People s Forum
tonight, his subject being "The Constitu
tional Convention." In view of the fact
that the last Legislature has put this
matter up to the people to be voted
upon at the next general election, and
particularly In view of the fact that
many believe that there are so many and
important reasons both for holding and
opposing such convention, and positive
views concerning same by many. It is
believed that a very large attendance will
be present at the Forum. It Is generally
supposed that Colonel Wood is opposed
to the holding of such convention. It is
expected that Judge W. R. King, of the
Supreme Court of this state, will address
the Forum upon the same subject, soon,
possibly the Sunday following. Free dis

of the evening. Meeting is at Selling

Neighborhood Erects Fi rehouse.
Ittsidents and property-owners at Arbor
l,odg are completing a flrehouse for a
volunteer company on Portland boule
vard, near the St. John carllne. at cost of
about Jiono. Hostrander & Rust have
donated the use of a lot for the build
ing until the city can establish a paid
company In that community. Subscrip
tions were taken to defray cost of the
building, but not enough was secured
from this source and an entertainment Is
being arranged to be given next Thurs
day night. April 15, in the hall at Arbor
Lodge. Music will be furnished by the
combined North Alblna and Peninsula
bands, and Portland singers have con
sented to appear. The city has appro
priated money to provide a hosecart and
hoxe for the volunteer fire company.
Wants Fill, Expedited. Secretary
Atchley. of the East Side Business Men's
Club, has written the Executive Board
culling attention to the delay in com
pleting the fill on Hast Sixth street, be
tween liast Washington and East Onk
streets. Contract for this fill waa let
to the Pacific Bridge Company two years
ngo, and only a small part of the fill
between Bast Stark and Bast Oak streets
has been made, material from the base
ment of buildings being dumped there by
wagons, a method considered too slow.
Site for New Church. Herman
Klaetsch has donated a lot at Oak Grove,
on the Oregon City Electric Railway, at
the northeast corner of Maple and Lee
avenues, for ar" tvew Methodist Church
building. The structure will be 34x 50, and
according to the plana will' be an at
tractive, building. Rev. P. J. Rlnehart,
C. A. Lewis and Lv E. Bentley are the
building committee. Work will be started
on the foundation at once.
Steel Bridge Push Cl,ub. It Is ex
pected that this club will hold a very
Interesting meeting Monday evening, as
several questions of vital importance to
the district will be discussed. All mem
bers and everybody Interested In the wel
fare of the district are urged to be pres

on the scene and took Louch to the
police station In the patrol wagon.
Judos Hunt to Hold Court. For the
purpose of Betting for trial those land
fraud cases still undisposed of. United
States District Judge William H. Hunt,
of Helena, Mont., will arrive In Portland
April 28. and the following day will open
court. The cases cover the Indictments
found by the Federal grand jury of this
state during the Henery investigations.
Judge Hunt will also probably pass sent
ence in those cases where the defendants
have already been convicted but have
thus far escaped sentence by reason of
appeals or other means. It Is not known
how long Judge Hunt will remain here.
but it is believed he will hot return to
Montana until all the remaining land
fraud cases have been passed upon. The
most Important case to be considered will
be that of the United States against
Binger Hermann. The other cases are
considered minor ones as compared with
those alreadYdecided.
3CIDWAT Club to Meet. The Midway
Improvement Club will meet tomorrow
night In the flrehouse. and among the
propositions to come up is the opening
of Kelly street, betwen Mllwaukie ave
nue and East Twenty-eight streeL Lw W.
Darling, president, said yesterday that he
considered the opening of Kelly street
of great Importance to that district, and
especially for ,the territory embracing
Woodstock. The club will take action to
secure a reinforcing water main from
the Mount Tabor reservoir, which Is to
supply the Mount Scott district and
Sellwood.
Oregon Presbytery to Meet. The
Oregon Presbytery, of the United Presby
terian Church, will hold its Spring meet
ing at the church edifice, on Grand ave
nue, beginning. Monday, April 13. The
first session will be held Monday after
noon at 1 o'clock. On Tuesday morning
the Women's Presbyterian Missionary So
ciety will hold a session. . and other ses
sions will be held both Tuesday and Wed
nesday. Dr. W. F. Holt is to be the prin-.
cipal speaker.
Death of Orlin A. Teck. Orlln A.
Teck died at the home of his son-in-law,
W. J. Phillips, 766 Ivon street, Friday
night, at the age of 76 years. He had
been a resident pf Portland for 20 years,
but had not been In active business for
several years. The funeral will be held
at the Portland Crematorium today at
I P. M.
Lecture on Oriental Rugb. The art
department of the Woman's Club will
hold an especially Interesting meeting.
The subject to be "Oriental Rugs," on
next Tuesday, in the Public Library art
room, at S o'clock. Mr. Karpaty, who is
thoroughly versed on the subject of rugs,
will give the lecture.
The Women's Guild, at St. David's
Episcopal Church, will serve a dinner at
the parish house. East Twelfth and Mor
rison streets, Thursday. April 16, from
6:30 to 7:30 P. M. Aprons and candy will
be on sale. Tickets 60 cents, children 13
years and under 35 cents.
