Talk Based on Fact.
This, of course, is all talfc i

Turkey there were probably 50 armed '
oervian oanas, counting 30 or 40 men
each, teaching the Sultan's Christian
subjects to call themselves Servians. The
R-omuajis, back from Turkey at that
time, had told the tale of their exploits
The round of feasting with their friends
had come to an end; and they were ready
for new adventures. There are a score
of these leaders and several hundred
bandsmen now out of work in Servia. To
quiet them at the beginning of the Win
ter the government allowed It to be un-
aersiooa mat. in the Spring there would
be fighting against the arch-enemy.
Servia 1b not a highly enlightened coun
try; neither is she a poor one. For these
two reasons a host of noli tic tarn. 9d
office-holders extort an easy living from
the mass of thrifty peasants. Now these
politicians would lose their role were the
country annexed or even "occupied tem
porarily" by the great neighbor; and ac
cordingly one must suppose that thev
have been using "talk" only to serve nnli-
tical purposes. Some among them, how
ever, are honest patriots.

says, "then it had better be that all are
slaves united."
This spirited young man is not inclined
to let slip this chance to wipe the blood
stain from the escutcheon of the dynasty
ot liarageorgivitcn. The vicious stories
that are told of him are probably false.
Relatives of the late Queen Draga carry
on the blood feud in the only way now
open to them; at the same time the prews
of Budapest and Vienna lets no tale det
rimental to this son of Karageorge pass
unpublished. The record of the Crown
Prince, however. Is untarnished.
In the Autumn it was said that the
Winter would cool the Servian ardor for
war. At that time Prince George's real
following was made up of some few
mature idealists, the average youth, and
a certain number of adventurers who put
In an appearance whenever and where
ever there is "trouble in the Balkans."
But now most of the country seems ready
to take the chance to win or lose. Tet,
of course, the Servians realize that their
only chance to win lies in maintaining the
war a sufficient length of time to awaken
6lave sympathy in- Russia.
Maps in Demand.
The bookshops of Belgrade are gold out
of maps of the disputed country. Every
body has one. and everybody knows how 4
Austria-Hungary has cheated the Serbs.
! On these maps, which they draw from
their pockets on every occasion, every
body points out to the stranger a route
to the sea. by which, in Turkish t:

make the Journey from the capital to the
Adriatic in about four days. Austria was
careful to cut the Bosnian border. It is -
explained, lust beyond this road, for she
had power at the Berlin congress, and
little Servia was without a sponsor.
Everybody goes out to the heights in
the afternoon to look across the river into
the plains of Hungary, to see If any
camp has sprung up there overnight. Or
perhaps a river gunboat has come down
to anchor off Semlin, the town opposite.
Directly below the heights, where a
fringe of shore borders the river. Servian
reserves are drilling hard. Many thou
sands of them have had two weeks' spe
cial training here since October.
It is still quite cold in Belgrade. This
is another reason why the cafes are
always crowded. ' There are many would
