North End realty holdings are again
Tery much In the foreground In discus
sions heard In the ofTiceB ot dealers and
brokers. Three blocks facing the Union
Station have been taken over by a promi
nent realty agent and two contiguous
blocks are said to be figured on to be
Included In the deals before the big
transaction Is closed.
This deal com fug so close to the former

Thirteenth street has renewed specula
tive opinions as to what is In the wind,
and all kinds of efforts are being made
to ilnd out which railroad is --behind the
transfers, but up to date "the lid" has
been kept firmly fastened down and It
would seem that nothing short of dyna
mite could jar it off.
One of the conjectures made In realty
circles, but which could not be confirms,
by officials of the company. Is that the i
..iMwnuKre roaa is Duying the land for
terminals. It Is rather difficult to as
sociate the latest purchase with the for
mer one In figuring out that the Milwau
kee is the right guess, except it be that
the blocks at the depot are to be held for
the purpose of compelling the Terminal
Company to make favorable concessions
when the time comes that the road shall
enter Portland.
New Theater Projected.
Another sale announced last week that
has particular Interest to the public Is
that of property at th southwest corner
of Seventh and Taylor streets to the
Calvin Helllg people. The location Is re
garded as excellent for a theater bulld-
!'?S.-beln weU m tow"-a the business
districts of the city, at the same time it
is on the edge of a thickly settled part
of tho residence section. Mr. Helllg la
not prepared to announce definite plans
for his new theater, only that he will
have- the building erected. Its size and
cost to depend on how the enterprise is
regarded by property-owners in" the
neighborhood whose buildings will be
materially benefited through the location
of the building there. "
Announcement was made during the
week that the Portland Railway, Light
& Power Company Intends to erect ex
tensive carshops in Portland at some
point not yet decided upon. In event
this project goes through It Is believed
the ground belonging to the company on
i?60"!,1; !'de of w"htnTton Btreet at
Ford will be sold. Doubtless the advo
cates of a new entrance to the City Park
will renew efforts to have the city buy
the land from the railroad company, now
that It can be bought without bulldliura
on it.
The successful trial trip of the H D
Kennedy, made last Thursday, has dem
onstrated that Portland yards are
equipped for turning out high-class ves
sels, and the event also has renewed ln
rn",H Projects to enlarge the city's
facilities. A large tract near Guild's
.Lake was bought some months ajto bv a
syndicate with the Intention of Installing
a shipbuilding plant at that point. The
project has not been given up, but Is held
In abeyance pending the formation of a

CRITICISE LAND OWNERS
COSDEJCfED.
Charles K. Henry Says Too Many
XonprogreaiTes Hold Desirable
Business Sites Downtown.
"Something evidently is wrong with the
way owners' of suitable sites for manu
facturing enterprises treat prospective
settlers in Portland." said Charles K.
Henry, yesterday. "Our firm has three
orders on Its books for sites from bl
Eastern concerns that want to establish
houses in this city. One of these Is the
Important packing-house of Morris A
Company, Chicago, and the other Is a no
less well-known concern from the same
city. Cudahy Company.- Since the es
tablishment of Swift & Company has lo
cated here with one of their leading
plants, now under course of construction,
the other big packing establishments are
In the market to secure suitable sites
for distributing warehouses.
"They require locations with trackage
and for that reason only a limited num
ber of sites are to be considered. We
have made all sorts of offers on both
sides of the river for land meeting the
requirements, but so far have been un
able to come to terms with owners. It
strikes me that holders of these sites
are standing in the way of further build
ing up of the city by placing prohibitive
prices on their property. They are doing
the dog In the manger act They neither
improve their holdings themselves nor
will they permit others to do so. Now,
of course there la no" law. which compels
a man to sell his land if he does not
want to, but there might be a upblio
sentiment aroused to make it decidedly
uncomfortable for nonprogressive owners
who stand in the way of those who want
to bring new enterprises to Portland."
Mr. Henry addressed a letter to the
Commercial Ohib on this, subject, part of
which Is as follows:
