DR. DERBY GETS NOTORIETY
Dentist Known Here Said to Have
Cansed Duel.
Dr. -Walter & Derby, who rained
some notoriety in Portland in 1899. Is
again in the limelight, this time In
Alturas, Northern California. Accord
ing to a report published in the Sacra
mento Bee. March 9. Derby was the
direct cause of a pistol duel in the
streets of that town between a Dr.
C-ibson and George Elliott, both resi
dents of that place.
The story goes that Derby lived for
a short time at Alturas. where he suc
?Z winning the affections of
the Gibson woman. Derby finally was
ordered by the husband to leave the
place, which he. did. going to Cedar
ville. where he carried on a correspond

delivered one of these letters to Mrs.

street, each firing several shots at
the other. Only one bullet took effect,
