Packing plant, costing $3,000,000, is being constructed by Swif Co., to be completed in July, and which will make this city the greatest packing center in West. New. municipal pipeline will be constructed to increase puppl famous Bull Run water, a bond issue of $3,000,000 having been aut ized for that purpose. Public park system is being extended, for which purpose $500,000 been raised and additional bond issue of $500,000 authorized. One of the largest sawmills in the world, to employ 500 men. is under construction and will add greatly to the city's immense output. Hill railroad down the north bank of the Columbia, recently com pleted at a cost of $45,000,000, has made great additional trade territory tributary to this city. Bridge across Willamette River at Madison street will snon be built, for which $450,000 bonds are to be sold, and voters at the next election will pass on $1,295,000 bridge project for North Portland. Construction has been started on third high school, to cost $250,000, and an equal amount will also be spent this year on grammar schools, site for new West Side High School has also been purchased at" cost of $92,500. Harriman system will soon begin construction on long-projected line into Central Oregon, which will open up vast. country tributary to Port-, land. " . ' . . " - Banking institutions are noted for their stability and have annual clearings amounting to between $300,000,000 and $400,000,000. Great wholesale trade is carried on, amounting annually to $200, 000,000. Remarkable builcrmg movement is in progress, more than $10,500,000 being spent on construction in 1908, and present year promising to exceed that amount. . Contracts for fills on East Side have been awarded, involving ex penditure of $500,000, with much additional work projected. Municipal bond issue of $500,000 for the purchase of public docks has been authorized. " ' Cement plant costing $1,000,000 will soon be established. Factories have annual output estimated at $35,000,000, and new industries are constantly being started. . Taxable property of Multnomah County is assessed at $236,187,737. Congressional appropriation of $2,500,000 for new postoffice is ex pected ; postal business now amounts to more than $600,000 yearly. Bond issue of $275,000 for the purchase of a .fireboat has been authorized. New Courthouse for Multnomah County is proposed, which will cost $500,000. ' Rose Festival, the greatest annual floral carnival held in the United States, will occur this year, June 7-12. Extensive system of electric railways is being constructed, tapping the rich farming districts of the Willamette Valley. Over 153,000 freight cars were handled in the union terminal yards last year and shipping is constantly gaining. . Exports foreign during 1908 included 13,010,749 bushels of wheat, valued at $11,728,128 ; 684,684 barrels of flour, valued at $2,548,382; 100,686,324 feet of lumber, valued at $1,284,202. Exports coastwise during 1908 included 3,415,392 bushels of wheat, valued at $2,968,532 ; 256,292 barrels of flour, valued at $1,095,363; 61,403,674 feet of lumber, valued-at $761,556.
