THE SUNDAY OREGONIAN, PORTLAND, MARCH 7, 1909. 9 Willy 1100 FRONTAGE T. B. Wilcox Would Consider a Joint Building on Sixth. PLANS OFFICE STRUCTURE Washington-street Corner Will Be Improved as Soon as Xew Imper ial Hotel on Stark Street Reaches Completion. Theodore. B. Wilcox said yesterday that little. Is to be added to announcements already made with reference- to the office building he Is to have erected at the southeast corner of Sixth and. Washing ton streets. Some days ago there was a report In circulation that Mr. Wilcox had under consideration the purchase of the Olds, Wortman & Kins; annex fronting on Sixth street, adjoining his corner. He said with reference to this report that he was not aware the Drs. Brown, the owners, desire to sell their holding at this place, and that no proposal had been brought up to him to acquire ownership of the property. Mr. Wilcox said that In case Drs. Brown would enter into a building project that would embrace both properties. It might go through and there by Insure to the corner and abutting property a building that would be a credit to the corner, which he said he considered the best one In Oregon. But even If the arrangement for larger Bixth-street frontage Is not made. It Is Mr. Wilcox Intention to erect on his corner an office building of from 10 to 14 stories. He said that Just when building operations could be started on the site is Just now rather problematical. Leases Xot Yet Expired. "Leases of the buildings on my corner," be said, "have some months to run and while some sort of ah adjustment might be entered Into to terminate them amicably before expiration. It is not prob able that I shall do anything in that direction, at least for the present. "I am doing what I can to finish up the new Imperial Hotel, at Seventh and Stark, which has been delayed in con struction by reason of unfavorable wea ther conditions for the past few weeks. With such weather as Is now promised the building can be rushed along much more rapidly than has been possible with the four stories now practically built, for pouring is going In on the fourth floor. "When the new Imperial Is well on to completion. I shall turn my attention to the Washington-street corner and desire to have leases and similar matters shaped o that the best progress possible may attend that work. Call It "New Imperial." "As to the name for my Stark-street building, it will be noticed I have named It the iNew Imperial. I do not fancy the name 'annex' and have suggested to Mr. Metschan the name I have Just used. There was some talk, I believe, to give my name to the new hotel, but 1 advise against that for two reasons the Im perial Is established and the New Im perial would receive the benefit. In a great measure, of the advertising and another reason," said Mr. Wilcox with a broad smile, "I may some day want to build an old men's home or such thing Mr. Wilcox remarked in the course of his talk that when he bought the two corner properties a few of his acquaint ances advised him to build small tem porary structures so that Immediate revenue might be obtained. He said In reply to these suggestions that Portland would never grow Into greater Importance If small buildings were put up, even tem porarily, on the choice sites. . He said he believed in buildings that will be . a credit to the city and intended to have that class erected on his sites. KILLINGS WORTH BUILDS UP BEVERAIi HTGH-OIiASS STRCO- TUK.ES are projected. North Albina Business Men Propose to Organize Commercial Club and Build Own House. Buildings costing above (100.000 are projected along Klllingsworth avenue for this Spring, in addition to the high school, on which work has been started. Klllingsworth & Warren contemplate the erection of a building on the avenue be tween Commercial and Congress streets. It will be of briok construction and at least three stories. A three-story brick, 100x100, is being figured on to be erected on Klllings wortb. and Minnesota avenues this Bpring. On Albina and Kllllngswortb. avenues a three-story business building will be erected. The movement for a new clubhouse for quarters for the pro posed Commercial Club Is meeting with much favor among business men in North Albina. Other, buildings are being figured on either onjj.or near Killings worth avenue. It is proposed to extend Klllingsworth avenue down to the Willamette River and east to Sandy road, tapping that district to the eastward. By connect ing Klllingsworth avenue with the pro posed through street to St. John is ex pected to Increase its importance as a business street. North, of this avenue toward Columbia Slough there Is a rapid STowth. Hundreds of lots "Were sold in the Swlnton tract, on which houses will be built this Summer. Streets are be ing Improved northward to meet the building improvements under way in that direction. The contractor for Jefferson High School has a force of men at work ex cavating for the foundation. Shacks for housing tools have been put up, and prep arations have been made for a vigorous prosecution of the work of erecting the buildings. There is a movement on foot to im prove Albina and Mississippi avenues by autting the heavy grade at Cook avenue. These two streets connect Lower with North Albina at Klllingsworth avenue, but the hill between Fremont and Mor ris streets Is prohibitive for heavy loads, and the proposition Is to lower the grade at the crest of the hill on both Albina and Mississippi avenues. It la believed this must be done sooner or later, but that the best - time is now. Both pass through Multnomah Addition, a grow ing section. By starting a cut at Beach street southward the steep hill can be reduced materially and fairly good grades lecured on both avenues. A committee from the North Albina Push Club has been empowered to select a building site, 100x60. for a clubhouse for a local Commercial Club to cost J1B. 00 to $25,000, and make psyment on the same. A two or three-story struc ture will be erected. This committee was authorized to draw up a plan for a club organization A Joint stock company will be formed to handle the building project. The clubrooms will be in the top floor and the lower . floor will be used for stores. The project is meeting with marked encouragement from business men, and it is believed that such a building will pay as an Investment outside of the In cidental advantage of having a clubhouse and auditorium for public gatherings.
