Another pleasant feature was the choral practice under the direction of Miss Hellroan, who has recently associated herself with the T. W. C. A. as choral director. The Monday Musical Club, which origi nated as a small neighborhood affair, has decided to increase Its membership and to put Itself upon a business basis. The three classes of membership consist of active, associate and nonresident mem bers. To be eligible foi active member ship one Is required to take part In solo work, either vocal or Instrumental. The vocal and musical directors of the club are welcome additions to the musical tal ent of the City of Portland and under their guidance the club entertains great hopes for future achieveemnts. Sothern to Continue Monday and Tuesday "Lord Dundreary" Will Be the Bill Tomorrow ' Night, Monday Two Leading Women in Both Casts. 'Richelieu" IT will be welcome news to Portland theater-goers to learn of the ex tended engagement of E. H. Sothern at the Helllg Theater next Monday and Tuesday nights. This has been brought about by Calvin Helllg, president of the Northwestern Theatrical Association, who has canceled the first two nights In Seattle and given them to Portland. The opening bill Monday night will be 'Lord Dundreary;" ' Tuesday night, "Richelieu." Sothern promises theater-goers an evening of keen enjoyment when he gives them an opportunity to see the most famous comedy character of the American drama reappear upon It when he presents "Lord Dundreary-" The role ef the quaint, eccentric English lord, with his funny skip, his lisp, languid manner, stutter, drawl, vapid speech and chuckling laugh. Is as quaint. In teresting and ridiculously amusing to audiences of today, as when first pro duced SO years ago. Richelieu gives Sothern an opportun ity to add another masterpiece to his famous dramatic portrait gallery, fitting to be placed beside RIs Hamlet. In Both- ern's Impersonation the dignity, grandeur and romance of the Intrepid cardinal is made a creation that will long be re membered. As a stage production, Mr. Sothern has given the play the most elaborate presentation It has ever re celved in this country. He has added to Its charm through the Introduction of old-time melodies which play an im portant part In the general artistic effect of the performance. Some of these melodies are by Gounod, and one by King Louis XIIL Mr. Sothern comes supported by a strong dramatic organization. He has two leading women who appear In all plays. Miss Gladys Hanson and Miss Virginia Hammond. Owing to the length of the perfor nance, the curtain rises at 8 oclock sharp for the performance of "Richelieu." i j E. H. (Special) In striking contrast to the state of things prevailing In some other coun tries, the financial and industrial outlook In the Transvaal, In certain respects at least, seems to be very promising. If a rising state revenue indicates growing prosperity, the Colony has good ground for satisfaction. During the first quarter of the financial year, which begins July 1. the treasury receipts showed a gramy- ing increase all round, - and especially in the Items of posts, telegraphs, estate and Ira duties. - In addition. $1,200,000 was-reoeived from the colony's share or last years p' the Premier Diamond Mine, for which no it. .b.. in tVi hnrieet estimate. vrvuib A handsome surplus is already In sight.
