The market for 1909 hop so far as sta

the demand were normal, prices would be

show only 83,600 bales of this year's crop
In the hands of growers on the Pacific Coast
at tU present time, as compared with, 100,
C"0 bales In first hands one year ago. and
nearly 173.000 bales held by growers at
this time two years ago.

Of the 1907 holdings tn California, one
large grower alone has 560O bales, while the
same grower has about 2,100 bales of the
1906 crop.
Er.fr land will probably take 20.000 bales
of hops yet this season. Thus far the
exports to that country from Oregon have
been only about 20,000 bales. England
could take every bale of the 83.000 left on
the Coast, and her Import a would still be
less than they bare been for several years
past.
The local market waa slow yesterday.
From All that could be learned, there was
not as much pressure to sell as was the
case before Christmas. H. I. Ha-t has. In
the post few days, bought- about 400 bales
at prices ranging from a to H cents. A
few scattered sales were reported In differ

There has been, quite a number of hop
saa the past week on this market. One
groiVer reports the purchase of about 150
bale of mediums at 10 to 11H cents. There
Is quite a demand for these hops tn the
sbsence of the choicer grades which are
still held vry firmly above present market

busy and there has been quite a clearing up
cf stocks hereabouts.

Coming Week.
The Indications are for a good trade in
chickens In the coming week. Baying has
been slow for several days and retailers
stocks are understood to be light. The
movement yesterday was small, but chicken
prices were on a firmer basis. Qeese were
weak and ducks steady. A little business
was doc In dressed turkeys at the prices
that prevailed before Christmas.
Eggs were sluggish and as stocks are
accumulating in some quarters, the market
had a rather easy tone.
City creamery butter cleaned up as fast
as made and was quoted) firm. Some grades

NEW TORTC, Dec. 26. The Financier will
say:
The statement of the clearing-house bsnks
of New Tork City for the week ending De
cember 26 showed a continuance of the'very
heavy decreases in leading Items reported
In the last previous statement. Ioans were
contracted of $23,693,000. the decrease In
cash w $C.rfiO.700, while deposits fell off
$30,065,300. The heavy decresse In de
posits lesned the required cain reserve by
over $7,500,000. so that while the banks
lost $3,500,000 In cssh. the surplus reserve
rose $4.05.625. standing on Saturday, tak
ing actual conditions as a basis, at $18,
20!t,675. The rather unusual decrease tn loans snd
deposits, amounting during the last fort
night to over $71,750,000 In loans , and to
nearly $05,500,000 in deposits, are to be
accounted for by reason of payments on the
Panama loan and the adjustment of a num
ber of heavy syndicate operations. So far
as the movement of money between banks
is concerned the New York banks have been
getting supplies from the interior, the higher
rate for money having attracted funds to
tnis center.
It Is noteworthy that the State banks and
trust companies of Greater New York, not
reporting to the New York Clearlng-House,
are showing steady Increases in loans, which
indicates probably a shifting of current busl
ne?s to the trust companies. The Increase In
the loan Item of the latter Institutions during
the past week was $9. "CO, 600, while net de
posits rose $5.103,300. The State bank
and trust companies, however, did not
fortify themselves proportionately in cash,
the loss In that Item ha,vlng been over
.yo.(XH. The banks are in very com'
tt rtable circumstances, the reserve stand
ing several million dollars higher than re
ported 12 months ago. It will be necessary
for the trust companies to add to their
cash- reserve shortly In order to comply with
the state law requiring them to set aside
certain increased percentages of cash until
a fixed maximum has been reached.
The statement of averages of the clear-lng-hou?e
banks for the week shows that
the banks hold $16,923,325 more than the
requirements of the 25 per cent reserve rule.
This Is an Increase of over $6,000,000 In the
proportionate cash reserve as compared with
last weeic. The statement follows:
