TIIE SUNDAY OREGOXIAX, PORTLAND, DECE3IBER 20, 1908.
CXune:
IN MAXT respects this week's social
calendar has been filled with mor
event than the fortnight passed.
Prominent among the large affairs was
the Assembly Ball on Tuesday evening,
which was of dominant Interest. Other
events of importance -were the White-'
houee tea and reception on Tuesday, the
subscription dance on Friday evening,
Mrs. Samuel C. Kerr's bridge, and Mrs.
Morton Insley's luncheon. . Of Interest,
too, was the Scottish Kits dancing party.
Very few things are promised for the
coming week, and the affairs social will
no doubt be confined to home entertain
ments and family parties, with few, If
any, large events.
The Assembly Ball given on Tuesday
evening at the Hotel Portland was quite
the largest event of the season of a
semi-public nature. The Attendance was
representative and In every way the af
fair was a triumph to the committee In
charge, which Is composed of Roderick
Macleay, Henry Ladd Corbett and Tom
Robertson. The salons of the Hotel
Portland were beautifully decorated, and
a number of artistic bowers and retreats
added to the hospitable atmosphere. The
large grillroom was given over to the
dancers. In the conservatory masses of
chrysanthemums, poinsettlas and emilax
were used effectively, with a background
of palms and large potted plants.
In the dining-room, where supper was
served, the tables were gay with cut
flowers, and Waldemar rind's orchestra
gave selections here throughout the
; evening.
The breakfast-room was converted into
a Japanese Summer garden, with a tea-
. house and pagoda at one end of the room.
' from which punch was dispensed by two
little almond-eyed women in native cos
, tume. Oriental rugs, Japanese screens
I comfortable divans and chairs, together
with a generous use of gay colored lan
, terns, made the scene a truly festive one,
and one of the most beautiful dances
j ever given here. The patronesses were
