cial.) Arthur Lotta, 6 years old. while
playing around the machinery in the
planing department of the Slade mill
this morning, was caught In the gear
ing of the conveyer and though he made
several revolutions and was thrown
violently to the floor, no bones were
broken. Severe bruises on hia legs aie
the only apparent Injuries.
The boy's father, who was working
In the building, picked the child, up and
earrled him to the home two blocks
distance. The lad'a escape from death
Is regarded as almost miraculous. The
boy had followed his father Into the
mill and his presence was unnoticed.
FRUIT MEN HEAR LECTURE
Medford Orchardists Told How to
Combat Pear Blight.
MEDFORD. Or.. Dec. 12. (Special.)
The entire ' adjacent country was repre
sented here today at the horticultural
meeting, at which Professor Ogara de
livered n instructive lecture on the sub
ject ' of fruit diseases and pests.. Tha
. professor pointed out how It is possible
for the germ of the pear blight ti be
carried into the pollen and from there
how It spreads throughout the tree. He
further explained that the disease being
a purely local one can easily be stamped
out.
During the past year Mr. Hoover, a
local orchardlst. suffered the loss of a
number of trees before finding the sci
entific remedy to apply. It is planned
to hold these meetings semi-monthly In
the valley during the Winter.
GRANGERS TALK POLITICS

Resolutions In Two-Day Ses-slon.
WHITE SALMON. Wash.. Dec. 12.
- (Special. ) Pomona Grange, which has
been holding a two days' session here,
adjourned today. Members from all
parts of the county were present.
The Grange adopted resolutions ad
vocating the defeat of the Potter bill,
now before Congress, the electiori of
United States Senators by direct vote
of the people, and the postal savings
bank. It Indorsed woman suffrage and
the local option law. recommending that
this law remain In force till prohibi
tion could be secured. It urged the
adoption of township organization In
Klickitat County.
HURLED 20 FEET BY BLAST

WHITE SAI.MON. Wash.. Dec. 12.-
(Special.l Henry Stanch, of this place,
met with a painful accident yesterday.
He was employed In blasting out a
portion vt the Uillaide. . preparatory
to maklm a new road between Binder
and White Salmon dock. While eat
ing his lunch several sticks of dyna
mite, which had been placed near tha
fire to thaw out. exploded. Mr. Stanch
was thrown 20 feet and was seriously
injured. His clothes were torn Into

BATCH OF NEAR-BEER HELD
Local Option Town Yields Good
(Quantity of Booze.
ALBANY. Or., Dec 12. (Special.)
James Blackburn. Frank Patterson and
Albert Peacock, arrested last evening
in raids conducted by local officers on
a lletred "blind pigs." were arraigned
today before City Recorder F. M. Red
field, charged with violating a city or
dinance which embodies the provisions
of the local option law. All asked time
to plead, and Recorder Redfleld set
Monday afternoon, at 1 o'clock as the
time. Blackburn is proprietor of a
near-beer emporium on Ferry street
and Patterson is an employe of the
resort. Peacock is proprietor of the
Fashion Livery Stables.
After the trials of the three men tha
officers will have a large quantity of
beer to destroy, as the ordinance under
which the arrests were mad permits
confiscation of the liquor. In tha near
beer resort four 10-gallon kegs, one
full barrel of bottled beer and three
barrels half full of bottles were se
cured, while at the livery stable the
officers found one full barrel of bot
tles and another barrel half full.
BURIED ALIVE, ESCAPES
Pendleton Workman Rescued After
Earth Caves In on lllni.
PBNDI-ETON. Or.. Dec. 12. (Special.)
To be literally burled alive and then to
escape without injury was the experi
ence which befell G. P. Melvin. a local
laborer today. He waa working with a
Northern Pariflc bridge crew about four
miles east of Pendleton this morning
when a till, by the side of which he waa
shoveling, suddenly caved onto him. He
was buried to his chin and It required
more than an hour for fellow-workmen to
liberate him from his perilous position.
A physician was summoned as soon as
the nccldent occurred irnd was on the
ground before Melvin was removed from
his living tomb, but it was found he had
not sustained, the slightest injury.
ESCAPES MOB FOR PRISON
Raymond Cunningham, of Union,
Will Wear Stripes at Salem.
I.A GRANDE. Or., Dec. 12. (Special.)
Raymond Cunningham, 24 years old, left
here tonight in charge of Sheriff Chllders
for Salem, where he must serve a 15
year sentence for attacking a young girl
near Union some time ago. The sentence
Is a heavy one. and came after Cunning
ham had pleaded guilty this afternoon.
Less than four weeks ago Cunningham
waa chased by a maddened crowd of men
and boys at Union, who sought his life
with guns and pitchforks. The Constable
there spirited him away and took him to
La Grande, where he was safely locked
up uutil today.
MISSING MAN IS LOCATED
J. lljelsing, of Gladstone, Found In
Oregon City Hotel, Sick.
OREGON CITT, Or.. Dec. 12. (Spe
cial.) J. HJelslng. who for the last
four weeks has been missing from his
home at Gladstone, was found this
morning at the Willamette Hotel,
where he has been ill, but is now on
the road to recovery.
Residents of Gladstone have been ex
ceedingly wrought up over the sup
posed disappearance of Hjelsing. who
came here last October and purchased
three lots in Gladstone. He paid for
them at the time of the purchase and
commenced to build a cottage In which
to keep bachelor's hall. Suddenly he
disappeared and It was feared that
harm had befallen him.
llr. Cross, who sold Hjelsing the lota,
made a vigorous search for the man
and located him this morning.
Buying Polk County Fruit Iands.
INDEPENDENCE, Or., Dec. 12. (Spe
cial.) K. V. Carter, an Ashland banker,
and William Addison, also of Ashland,
have purchased for John Roads and
Peter Rural two tracts of fruit land, or
a totsl of 657 acres. This land will be
subdivided and again placed. on the
market In small tracts.
