THE drawing near of the holiday
season and Its attendant duties
and demands upon time Is show
Ins; Itself In the quiet air of social
affairs. The Flanders' dance on Thurs
day evening; was the most prominent
event of the week. Next week the
tea to be grlven by Mrs. Charles Fran
ces Adams stands out as a prominent
social event. The Trinity Guild re
ception and the Nordlca concert will
number among; the publlo events of
social Interest. Later the first dance
of the series of Assembly Dance Is
of Importance, and then, with the holi
day season with Its Christmas parties,
dinners, reunions and dances will be
with us.
Mrs. Georpe IL Flanders and her
daughters. Misses Caroline and Louise
Flanders. entertained on Thursday
evening with the largest dancing; party
of the season. The affair was the
social event of the week, and the even
ing was a most brilliant one. The
large reception rooms on the lower
floor were given over to dancing, and
upstairs bridge was a feature of the
evening's entertainment. The decora
tions were beautiful, consisting of
masses of greens and chrysanthemums.
There was little decoration In the
rooms where there was dancing. In
the drawing-room where the hostesses
received there were pink roses. Punch
was served in the music-room, which
was beautiful with large bowls of yel
low chrysanthemums and festoons of
' green. Mrs. Oeorge H. Flanders, the
Misses Flanders and Mrs. J. Couch
Flanders received the guests. Mrs.
Flanders. Sr., was distinguished In a
handsome gown of black lace net, with
Maltese lace garnitures. Mrs. J. Couch
Flanders wore a pink chiffon gown
with Duchesse lace. Miss Flanders
was in white satin, with touches of
beautiful lace, and Miss Louise Flan
ders wore an artistic creation of pink
silk, trimmed with self bands and
lace. Mrs. David T. Honeyman wss
gowned In a white pompadour chif
fon gown, embroidered in pink roses,
with touches of silver and black, and
her coiffure was crowned with a silver
butterfly.
Miss Frances Lewis wore a beauti
ful Parisian gown, of white silk, cut
directoire, embroidered in pink roses,
and further enhanced by a girdle of
pale blue. Mrs. N. E. Aver wore a
handsome black satin directoire gown.
Mrs. C. K. S. Wood was In pale gray
silk, the bodice of which was heavily
embroidered In orchids. Mrs. John C
Alnsworth was gowned ' In white silk,
with handsome lace and bead passe
menterie. Miss Susan Plowden Stott was In
pink liberty satin. Miss Frances Wil
son's gown was especially lovely, a
directoire model of pale blue and sil
ver. Mrs. Henry Ladd Corbett was
gowned In a French gown of white
and gold, with an effective blue velvet
snood.
Mrs. L. Allen Lewis wore an Im
ported gown of burnt orange chiffon.
Miss Josephine Smith was in yellow.
Miss Genevieve Thompson wore a
beautiful pink chiffon creation. Miss
Mary Montgomery was gowned in a
handsome toilette of lavender velvet
with silver sequins. - e
Miss Kathleen Burns wore pink
satin cut in empire lines. Miss Mon
roe's gown was of white, with touches
of silver. Mrs. W. C. Alvord was
handsome In pale blue satin, with lace
garniture. Miss Webster wore pink.
Miss Lisa Wood wore one of her Paris
Ian gowns, a beautiful tulle of palest
rose pink, with tiny flowers of the
same material.
Mrs. C. J. Reed wore an effective
combination of white and yellow chif
fon. Mrs. Thomas Kerr was gowned In
a handsome white satin, in directoire
lines. Miss Dorothy Morrison was
charming In an empire gown of the
new pink. Miss Marxaret Walter wore
white silk. Miss Hazel Dolph was in
a white satin gown of the directoire
model, with touches of lace and orna
ments of pearls. Mrs. John K. -Kol-lock's
gown was of white net Hand
somely embroidered.
Mrs. Kdward C. Grelle will leave
soon for a few weeks' visit at her
home In California.
Among the affairs for the very
young folk was the party given on
Friday night at Vancouver Barracks
ly Colonel and Mrs. Oeorge Davis for
the members of Mlsa I.ulie Hall's Fri
day night dancing class. The party
was met at the ferry with carriages.
and taken to the gymnasium, which
was beautifully decorated for the
dance. The infantry band furnished
the music The patronesses were:
Mrs. James Honeyman, Mrs. James
Laldlaw. Miss Dorothy Morrison and
Miss Lulls Hall.
The leneflt reception of Trinity Mis
sion Guild to be held Tuesday evening
at the Parish House, at Nineteenth and
Davts etreets, will be the social event
of the week, and is "being looked for
ward to. particularly by the younger
set. Miss Lulle Hall, who has recently
taken up fancy dancing, and who Is a
gracefut exponent of her chosen art,
will give . solo dance. This society,
under It former name, the King's
Daughters, Is known as a delightful
entertainer and the yearly seml-publlc
functions are always a signal for social
approval.
Preceding the Flanders danoe. Miss
Franoes Lewis was hostess at a dinner
party for Mr. and Mrs. 'Henry Ladd
Corbett on Thursday evening, at her
home. .Covers were laid for nine. The
guests besides Mr. and Mrs. Corbett
were Mr. and Mrs. Peter Kerr, Mr. and
Mrs. Hunt Lewis, Miss Frances Wilson,
Roderick Macleay and Joseph Brad
ley.. Mrs. George K. Wentwerth. Jr., has
sent out cards for an afternoon In
honor of Miss Susan Plowden Stott.
Mr. and Mrs. I. N. Flelsohner were
dinner hosts on Wednesday for Childe
Haseam. the clever exponent of Im
pressionist art, whose studies of East
ern Oregon scenery has attracted such
wide attention.
The first-ball of the Assembly Club,
which Is to be given on Tuesday, De-oerobe-
15, at the Hotel Portland, Is
being eagerly anticipated. The second
and third of ,the remaining series of
the three dancea are to be given at
the Masonic Hall, on February 11 and
April 15 respectively. The patronesses
for the first ball will be Mrs. J. C. Alns
worth. Mrs. W. C. Alvord, Mrs. W. B.
Ayer, Mrs. C. F. Beebe, Mrs. W. J.
Burns. Mrs. Helen Ladd Corbett, Mrs.
Thomas Kerr, Mrs. J. K. Kollock, Mrs.

Mrs. C. P. Mills, of Mills College, who
has been a fortnight guest of Mr. and
Mrs. Cyrus A. Dolph. will leave on
Monday evening for her home In Cali
fornia. . Mrs. Mills has been the' re
cipient of much attention during her
visit here.
On today's page Is given a picture
of Miss Grace Whitman Gray, a daugh
ter of Captain and Mrs. James T. Gray,
whose engagement to Cloan N. Per
kins, of North Yamhill, was recently
announced. Mtss Gray Is a member of
an old family, her grandfather being
General O. O. Howard. Miss Gray is
particularly facile with her brush, and
has done some excellent' miniature
work. She spent some time studying
art in the East, and was a pupil of
Frank Vincent Dumond while he was
here. Miss Gray Is an attractive bru
nette with brilliant coloring, and has a
most charming personality. She was a
student at the Oregon University and
Is a popular sorority girl, being a mem
ber of the Gamma Phi Beta.
It will be remembered that Mls Gray
made her debut last year In conjunc
tion with her sister. Miss Jeanle Gray,
at the Irvington Tennis Club, when a
number of the most prominent matrons
In town assisted In receiving. Mr. Per
kins Is a graduate of the University of
Oregon, and a member of the Kappa
Sigma fraternity.

Mr. and Mrs. Frank B. Riley have
moved to 787 Irving street.
Miss Lou May. King, whose marriage
to George Lee McPherson will be cele
brated next Wednesday evening. Is be
ing made the recipient of many cour

August Berg has purchased a country
place near Mllwaukle, and baa a Sum
mer cottage under course of construc
tion. Mr. Berg is noted for his hospital
ity, and no doubt his place will be the
scene of much entertaining.

Portland Riding Academy was gay with
flags, bunting and festoons of cedar on
Friday night, the occasion being the first
musical ride of the Friday Evening Club.
This class Is composed of some of the
most skillful riders In the Hunt Club,
and their class drills, hurdle Jumping
and tandem driving. ' under the efficient
leadership of Mr. James K. Nicol, was
greatly admired by the large audience
attendant. This musical ride is the first
of a series tnat will be given on one
Friday of each month through the sea
son. The club members are Mr. and Mrs.

T. Scott Brooke returned last Monday
from San Francisco, after a two weeks'
stay In that city, where he went to meet
his sister, Mrs. J. 8. Parke, who. with
her two daughters. Miss Genevieve and
Miss Paulina Parke, have been In the
Philippines for a year. Major Parke ac
companied Ms family home, but will re
turn soon to his post.

Miss Falling has cards out for an af
ternoon bridge on next Monday at her
Fifth-street residence.
Mr. and Mrs. T. B. Wilcox are expected
to return on Monday from a four weeks'
visit In New York City, Washington, D.
C, and later at Chester, Mass., where
Mrs. Wilcox visited her father and sis
ter. Miss Clara Stevens. They also spent
some time In West port at Mrs. Wilcox's
old borne.
Mr. and Mrs. Morris WHittehouse have
returned from 8alt Lake City, and are
now with Mrs. Edward Cooklngham, who
Is Mr. Whttehouse'a sister. Later they
will move Into their attractive home at
Twenty-second and Kearney streets.
Felicitations are being extended Mr.
and Mrs. Ben F. Holman over the arrival
of a baby boy Friday morning. Mrs. Hol
man was formerly Miss Ethel Walter.
Mr. and Mrs. William Wallace Graham
were dinner hosts on Sunday afternoon
for Madame Maud Powell, the violinist,
her husband, who is known to the musi
cal profession as Godfrey Turner, Miss
May Muckle, the 'cellist, and Miss Anne
Ford, the pianist of the trio. The day
previous, Madame Powell and her hus
band, with Miss Mukle and Miss Ford,
accompanied Mr. Graham on a trip up
the Columbia River, as they wished to
view the world--enowned river scenery
of which they had read. Their plans
were to reach The Dalles, but the party
found they could not make satisfactory
railroad connections at that point, and
laxrSed at Hood River to view the Hood
River Valley. The train was nine hours
late and the party spent the night at
Hood stiver, returning to this city by
train the next morning. Madame Powell
and Mr. Graham were both pupils of the
late Joachim and other teachers at dif
ferent periods, at tne Koenlghllche Hoch
schule, Berlin, Germany, and they ex
changed many interesting musical rem
iniscences about mutual friends In Ber
lin and elsewhere.
On Thursday afternoon, with quiet
ceremony, Miss Gertrude Corlnne
Riely and William C. Barker, were
married, at the residence of the bride
groom's mother, Mrs. C. C. Barker.
Only the immediate relatives were
present at the service, which was read
by Dr. William Hiram Foulkes. Mrs.
Barker is the daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. C. S. Riely. and Mr. Barker la
a son of the late, C. C. Barker, who
waa prominently Identified with lum
ber Interests. Mr. and Mrs. Barker
will leave soon for-Europe, where
they plan to remain a year.

Mrs. A. L. Hexter will leave Thurs
day for a two-months' sojourn In the
East, .visiting In Philadelphia part of
the time, and later attending the opera
season In New York.
Mrs. Lewis Russell and her daughter
Catherine, who have been traveling in
Europe since last May. are now set
tled for the Winter at Nice, France.
The Irvington Dancing Club will
give Its second party on Thursday
evening, December' 10, at the Irving
ton clubhouse. The affair promises to
be Interesting, and Is one of a series

Mrs. Cecil H. Bauer will be at home
on Tuesday from S till 5 o'clock at her
residence at the oorner of Nineteenth
and Hoyt streets.
Mrs. Mary C. E. Lewis returned on
Tuesday from a trip through Eastern
Oregon.
The handsome new residence of Mr.
and Mrs. W. L. Straugh, located at 851
Northrup street, which has been under
course of construction for some time,
is now completed, and the family is
domiciled In It.
An announcement party was given
for Miss Theresa Smith, of Piedmont.
