North Alblna Improvement Club has
called a special meeting of the women of
tfrat aection for Monday night to con
vene in the flrehouse on Alblna avenue to
organise an auxiliary to the Peninsula
Rose Association. All ladles, young and
old, are urged to attend this meeting.
It is considered necessary to secure the
co-operation of the women of the Pen
insula In carrying out the plans adopted
for ttie coming year, in rose culture and
In preparing a rose display tnat will
eclipse what was accomplished last year.
Steps have already been taken to secure
space at the Union Depot for the display
and for the distribution of roses.

Firb Wagon Ri-ns Into Car. While
responding to a telephone call of fire at
S:3o o'clock yesterday afternoon, nose
comnanv Xo. 2 collided with "S" car No.
l.-. at Third and Jeff.rson streets. Cap,
tain Archie Crews. In command of the
comnanv. was slightly Injured by con
tact with th pavement, as he was hurled
from his position on the' hose cart. The
horses were bruised, but not badly hurt
and the front platform of the streetcar
wrs shattered. The fire was In the homo
of Axwell Johnson, at SX Tenth street,
and was caused by an explosion of paint,
whlo. was being warmed. Johnson's
hands were scorched, but not seriously
The damage to the building waa slight.
Chemical No. 2 reached the scene quickly
and extinguished the flames without dif
ficulty.
POO LB AlARRlES UNDER DlPPICULTTFS.
"Jimmle" Poole got out a marriage
license yesterday after some trouble. Mr.
Poole, a soldier from Vancouver in this
Instance, gained the consent of Miss Mary
Bvans to marry him. But when he
reached the County Clerk's ofilce he
found that someone had telephoned the
clerk not to Issue a license, for Miss
F.vans was only 16 years of age. The In
formant said he was her father. So the
couple had to go in search of relatives,
but later they appeared with the girl's
sister and a neighbor, who swore that she
was IS years old. The Poole nuptials were
then made possible by the issuance of a
license.
Expert Twenty - btohth - Ftreet
BRirxiB. Mayor Dane and the members
or the brldgs committee of the Executive
Board yesterday afternoon appointed
William L. Grondahl. R. I.. Donald and J.
W. Moffatt as a committee of expert con
crete men to make a thorough investiga
tion of the re-enforced concrete bridge
on East Twenty-eighth street, across Sul
livan's Gulch. A suspicion exists that
there are defects in the bridge, and tho
committee will report upon the matter.
Union Tempera.n'ce Meeting. Under
the auspices of the local Women's Chris
tian Temperance Union, a union temper
ance meeting will be held this afternoon
at 2:30 o'clock, in the Lents Evangelical
Church. Today is universalist temperance
day, and the meeting is held in honor of
the occasion. Addresses will be delivered
by Mrs. L. F. Addlton and some of the
local ministers. The church Is a short
distance south of the waiting-room.
Students Give Minstrel Show. The
members of the Eukrineon Society, of
the East Portland High School, will give
minstrel performance In the assembly
hall next Friday evening, December 4.
The students have been working hard
preparing for the performance for several
weeks. For the occasion the assembly
hall will be decorated In the colors of
the school, and arrangements are being
made for lighting the stage.
Jacob Turner Is Dead. Jacob Turner
died yesterday at hla home, 560 Vancouver
avenue, at the age of 61 years, lie had
been a resident, of Portland for 20 years.
A widow and the following children sur
vive him: Clarence Turner. Mrs. Hahn.
Mrs. Albert Duynde, of Portland, and J.
H. Turner, of 6alt Lake City. The fu
neral will he held from the family home
tomorrow at an hour to be announced.

second difficulty that has arisen In the
settlement of the estate of Mary J
Gans, mother of the contestants. By

left $5 apiece, with the understanding
that when the cost of administration
had been paid the residue was to be
divided equally. T. G. Ryan resigned
as executor of the estate last May and
there was an earnest contest between
Mrs. Martin and her brother, L. B.
Cusick, for the place. They Anally
compromised by naming O. Lv Price.
The estate Is valued at J3966.
