Week-End Pause in Stock
Speculation.
OPERATORS ARE CAUTIOUS
l tilled Slates Steel - Loses Part X
Friday's Gain Sew York Trac
tions Are Buoyant on Pros

NEW YORK. Nov. 14. The .Sowing down
of th. speculative pace In the stock market
today from that of yesterday Ms du. In
part, so doubt, to the customary practice
or evening up all financial transactions with
the close of th. week. A disposition to do
this 1. tha more pronounced In th. case of
commitments dependent on so delicate a bal
ance as that on which stock prices hang,
especially after' so animated a speculation
and so pronounced a rise in prices as has oc
curred this week. The Sunday closed Inter
val, .with Its possibility of sudden events
which might prove a shock to tne market
fabric, makes the practical operator In stocks
dresd leaving open a vulnerable position.
There was a garnering of profits accrued
by those prompted by this sentiment. There
was a marked decline ajeo from yesterday's
furious activity.
One or two Items In the day's news In
creased the tendency to pause. One was the
statement attributed to President Corey, of
the United States Steel Corporation, placing
tha preoent working of Its mills at 00 per
cent of capacity and putting forward the
probable date for restoration of ' normal
healthful conditions of businet. to the middle
of next Summer. The action of United States
Steel had a strong sympathetic effect on tha
whole market. It was scarcely counteracted
by th. vlgoroua upward movement In some
other stocks on the list. The New fork trac
tions were -among these, not only th. stocks,
but the bonds of that group rising buoyantly.
Prospects for reorganisation were . ascribed
aa the motive for th movement. Th
strength of this group and of some others
led a good rally In th. second hour, but
prices weakened again sharply at the close.
Th bank statement disclosed a larger gain
In cash ' than had been anticipated and the
actlv. week In financial and speculative mar
ket, was reflected In the loan expansion,
which was stated at 35.000.000 In the clearing-house
averages, but IU.925.000 In th
actual condition, with a supplementary in
crease of 87.842.800 by th. other banks and
trust companies. Th. decrease In circulation
of 32.270.WO reported by th clearing-house
banks marks tb retirement of notes Issued
against the one-year United States Treasury
certificates, which will matur on Novem
ber 24.
Bond wer. strong. Total sales, par value.

GREAT INCREASE IB QMS
BAXK STATEMENT SHOWS RE
VIVAL IX ACTIVITY.
Cash Gain Not Sufficient to Offset
This Expansion, and Surplus
Reserve Is Decreased.
NEW YORK, Nov. 14. Th Financier
will say:
The associated banks of the city Issue
each week two statements ; one based on
average conditions covering the previous
week, and the other showing the actual
conditions of business at the close of the
current week. These two statements vary
widely at tlras, but as a general rule the
st ate men t of actual conditions is to be
relied upon as showing the real standing
of the banks, and therefore, in this analysis
the figures representing actual conditions
are-always used.
The exhibit of the banks for th week
ending November 14 showawl, as had been
anticipated, a very large expansion in loans.
The increase, amounting to $11,925,000. was
due, of course, to the revival of activity
on the stock exchange and also in general
business circles. The banks gained $2,530,
100 In cash, which represented receipts of
new gold and a slight gain from the in
terior, operations with the Sub-treasury and
an export of J500.000 of gold to Canada
being insufficient to cut down the net gain
for the week. Deposits rose $16,664,600
and this increased the reserve requirements
by over $4,000,000. Th gain in cash, there
fore, did not prove sufficient to offset the
required larger legal reserve and the re
serve on all deposits fell $1,836,035, stand
ing at the close of the week at $29,838,725.
There was a remarkably heavy increase
of $2,270,800 In circulation, traceable to
the fact that bank notes taken out against
temporary treasury certificates Issued a
year ago are now being retired.
The summary of state banks and trust
companies in Great New York not report
ing to the New York clearing-house,
showed for the week a heavy Increase of
$7,842.S0O In loans and an increase of $5,
826.000 In net depuoslts, although the in
crease In cash was less than $600,000.
The statement of averages of the
clearing-house banks for the week shows
that the banka hold $30,211,950 more than
the required 25 per cent reserve. This is a
decrease of $68,025 In the proportionate cash
reserve as compared with last week. The
statement for the week follows:
Increase.
Loans ... .$1,828,147,600 $5,005,o00

Decrease.
Th percentage of actual reserve of the
clearing-house banks at the close of business
yesterday was 27.30. The statement of banks
and trust companies of Greater New York not
members of the clearing-house shows that
these Institutions1 have aBrregate deposits of
$1,078,426,800; total cash on hand, $103,787,
600, , and loans amounting to $079,011,500.

1 NEW YORK. Nov. 14. Concluding one
of the most successful annual conventions
duringr its existence of 62 years, the Delta

Davis. D. K. E-, of New York, and pre

the following: letter from President Roose

made to array class again class. Should
such an effort ever succeed it will repre

ever be struck at what we think truest
and finest in American life. Therefore,
I feel that peculiar good must come from
associations such as D. K. E., an asso
