In order to bring to a close as rapid
ly as po.'Mble tlie long; drawn-out legal
battle that Miss Hattie F. Speckart,
now a resident of Portland, Is making
to Ret possession of the fortune left
her by her father, from her uncle. Leo
pold Schmidt, a millionaire brewer of
Olympia, Wulu, testimony in rebuttal
wasj taken yesterday before a master
in chancery. The hearing was held In
the offices of Martin L. Pipes, and was
held here because a number of Miss
Speckart's most important witnesses
live ir. the city. .
Miss Speckart, at the death of her
father, had a fortune amounting; to
$180,600 left to her. She became of
age some time ago and demanded her
share of the estate.- This was refused
by her mother and her uncle, who al
leged that . Mifs Speckart had agreed
to lend Schmidt the money nt-6 per
cent Interest to invest In the brewery
business.
Mis3 Speckart denied this and began
suit to recover her fortune. Neither
Schmidt nor his wife attended the
hearing, being afraid, It is said, to come
to Portland because of a threatened
suit for defamation of character. The
next move in the case will be the argu
ments wnicn will be made before Fed
eral Judge H. C. Hanford.
