Among men who figured in the news of the week In Sir Alfred Harmsworth, or Lord Northoliffe. him self one of the greatest publishers of news. He controls the London Times, and la proprietor of the Iatly Mall and some 45 other publications. He has arrived In New York, accompanied by his wife and mother. He will spend aome time In New York and then go to Newfoundland to look after his vast interests there. He was born In Dub lln In 15 and has made a name for himself In journalism. Jonathan P. Tolllver Is triad the Chi cago convention choRe Pherman to be ita candidate for the Vice-Presidency. It was the common belief at Chicago that the President wanted the Iowa man as a running mate for Taft. In the belief that he would make a great talking campaign. Mr. Dolliver has been doing all the talking necessary to help the ticket, not alone in his own state, but In a great many others. He is one of the most reliable "spell binders" of the Republican party. Dr. Je irand Norton Denslow has aroused the medical profession by claiming that he has discovered a cure for locomotor ataxia. The doctors would have been incredulous but for the testimony of Dr. M. Allen Starr as to his success In eight pronounced cases sent to him from the clinic of Vanderbllt Hospital. Dr. UensloWs theory Is that locomotor ataxia is caused by some erosion of the nerves and his treatment is so simple that It commends Itself to the profession very strongly. Here' is a new snapshot of that emi nent associate of kings and princes, Thomas R. Walsh, of Colorado. Mr. Walsh is an enormously wealthy mine- owner, who calls Colorado his home, but spends his Winters in Washington, where he lives in a house of which some princely European friends would not he ashamed. Some years ago It was reported that he was to go into partnership with the unspeakable Leopold of Belgium in the control of the Congo Free State but as matters developed. Mr. Walsh and his friends merely got "a rich concession in that country. John F. Shafroth is the Democratic nominee for overnor of Colorado. He was born in 1854 at Kayette. Mo.. -and graduated from the University of Michigan. He practiced law at Payette until 1879. wh.n he moved to Denver. He Is a member of Congress. .Tesso McDonald Is the Republican candidate for Governor of Colorado and his friends are confident he will be ! elected. If he is defeated it will be by dissensions in the party. Sunday in Portland Churches BAPTIST. First. th Whir Tempi. Twelfth . nd Tayior trt J. Whtfomb Broujcher. D. 1. pa tor.
