Kxpoaitlon Kink Opens Monday
Night for Fall and Winter.
After being closed for live months,
the Exposition Roller-Skating Rink
will open for the Winter Monday night,
l'uring the closed months the rink has
been all overhauled and remodeled
and many new convenlencea and com
forts added. The great skating sur
firr is like one great sheet of glass,
and the skates are of the best.
Roller skating Is not only fascinating
hut beneflrtal. and this season bids
fair to eclipse all others. It is a clean
tund wholesome pastime, and can be
mastered by all. A clean and careful
policy ttas been adopted by the man
agement, and the rink will be con
ducted on a high plane.
Professor A. Ie Caprlos band has
been engaged for the season, and that
Is a guarantee of good music. The
slogan now seems to be: "Get the
skating habit.
"A knight for a Pay" Next Week.
There are a lot of good things In "A
Knight for a Iay" that cornea to the
Ilellig theater for four nights begin
ning next Sunday. October 11. The
organization comprises many come
dians, singers and actresses from the
comic opera atage. Occasionally the
"plot" concerning two Corslcan lock
ets and a fortune In stage money, and
a missing heir or two. and a forged
will, and various other complications
becomes lost or sidetracked In the
swirl of choruses and dances. Bobby
Karry. a clever comedian, is the real
hilarious mainspring of the piece and.
with Elsie Herbert, a comic maid
given to chatter and elopements, cre
ate more than enough fun for everybody.
Brown of Harvard" Next.
Every schoolboy and girl Is inter
ested In the forthcoming production
of "Brown of Harvard," by the Baker
Ftock Company. "Brown of Harvard"
is one of the best of the college plays,
and wlil be presented by the Baker
company in exact reproduction of the
oriKinal. as played by Harry Woodruff
and company at the Heillg last Janu

Sunday matinee October 4. School
clubs and societies may obtain blocks
of seats together by applying at the

The socr.e Is laid In a lone telegraph sta
tion on the S. P. R. R. In the middle of
th Nevada desert, and it deals with a
fatigued operator, a mistaken signal and
a woman's wit and heroism.
The noted prima donna Miss Helen Ber
tram Is making a special vaudeville tour
In the theater of the Orpheum ctrcuit.
She achieved a notable success in grand
and liKh: opera, and probably created
more original role In important musical
' comedies than any other American singer
' of recent years.
There is no more popular comedy come
dian oa the American stage tlian Charles
H. Bradshaw. who. with a capable com
pany of comedians, will play "Ht In a
Y'.x" here. The merry little skit in which
lie is the Essential figure, proves to be one
of th most entertaining of Its familiar
and nonsensical type.
Kaffma'a Simian Performers, an aggre
gation ot remarkable monkeys and ba
boons will provide an amuaing and Inter
esting act. Mr. Raffln is an old cirrus
' riown. who, : years ago. offered bis
first aggregation' of trained anlmala on
tiie stage.
' Arthur Dezxueg, who comes fcere in vau
deville, is one of America best known
minstrel comedians. For years he was
the favorite endman with Hi Henry, the
Haverly. and Primrose & West's big or
ganizations and he Is presenting the
quaint monologue which made him popu
lar then with new songs and timely wit
ticisms. LeClalr and- Sampson, who pay their
first visit here at the Orpheum are Eng
lish comedy athletic acrobats who are
travesty rymnasts. They have been suc
cessful abroad In a very funny act called,
"The Bogus Strong Man."
Noblette and Marshall present a bright
and tuneful melange of chatter and aong
which they style "Hints in Soldiery."
The Orpheum orchestra is receiving
much favorable commendation for the
beautiful manner in which their many
overtures are rendered. The usual motion
pictures close the show.
EUROPEAN ACT$ FOR GRAND
Fine Line of Entertainment on Pro
gramme Opening Tomorrow.
From the music halls of Europe and
the best vaudeville houses of 'America
come the acts which will be found on
the new programme at the Grand thts
week. The new show commences to
morrow afternoon. For the top of the
bill the booking agents of Sullivan &
Consldlne have secured Hill and SUvanl.
These people, a man and a woman, are
acknowledged as being, the greatest
unlcycle experts in the world. Their
act is strictly high-class at all times.
What they perform. Is not attempted
even by Imitators. The man ridea an
old-fas'hhtoned high -wheel and carries
the woman perched upon his shoulders.
He also rides a carriage wheel down a
flight of stairs. Hill and SUvanl begin
their tricks where others end and
there is not an ordinary bicycle trick
In their repertoire. .
Shooting a rlne is an easy matter,
but to shoot It like a sharpshooter Is
difficult. The Vivians have made this
difficulty easy for themselves and they
can hit the bullseye at every shot.
The hardest trick and fancy shots are
easy for them and they Introduce nov
elties Into the act. They were the
first to produce melody from chimes
by shooting at bells.
The New Housemaid" is guaranteed
a laugh-maker. Brooks and Vedder
are the participants. The plot tells of
the troubles a young husband has with
a parlor-maid and their exchange of
repartee Is of the' witty, qulck-flre
order. Songs and dances are Intro
duced In the sketch. Marie Scheftels
is a decided blonde and she is called
the English song-bird. To hear her
sing "When Dreams Come True" Is
alone worth the price of admission.
Gardner brothers have a reputation
In Australia for their musical act and
they will have a good place on the bill.
Welch and Earle. boys who drees In
while, are neat dancers and good sing
ers. Fred Bauer will have a new aong
and there will be motion pictures on
the Grandlscope.
Today ends the present big bill with
Roland West In "The Criminal": Laugh
lin's aerial dogs: the Abdullah Arab
tumblers and others.

Atra. the Bnllet-Proof Woman, Im

That the Pantages management has
succeeded In procuring a first-class
bill of American and European novel
ties for the new show commencing
with Monday'a matinee will be dem
onstrated by a perusal of the the fol
lowing list of great feature offerings:
The principal headline attraction
will be Atra. the bullet-proof woman.
Impervious to ordinary steel-tipped
bullets. She stands upon a pedestal
and permits Chevalier John de Lor is.
a crack European shot, to fire steel
tipped bullets at her from, a distance
of four yards. A piece of paper fast

to be pierced by the bullets and the
glass globe located behind her and In
direct path of the bullets, is shat
tered. A committee from the audience
rill be selected and permitted to ex
amine the bullets and load the rifle.
This act has been written up by all
the European and American scientific
papers and is considered by all to be
one of the greatest wonders of the age.
The Victoria Quartet is the special
added attraction. They are singers
and instrumentalists, playing on vari
ous stringed Instruments: their voices

Minnesota's Timber Cninjured
Weyerhaueser Interests Untouched.
ST. PAUL. Minn.. Oct. S. (Special.)
State Land Commissioner Iverson has is
sued a report - regarding the loss .from
the terrible forest fires on the Iron
Range, which Is to the effect that the
flames dtd no damage whatever to the
timber lands belonging to the State of
Minnesota.
As soon as the fires would permit, the
Land Commissioner sent deputies to In
vestigate the damage. They found that
the fires had only traveled over the same
paths that previous fires had done, and
the Immense trees for which Minnesota
Is noted, were uninjured. The state owns
millions of acres of timber lands, worth
hundreds of millions of dollars. Any loss
to them would mean a serious loss to the
state. The Weyerhauesers, of St. Paul,
the largest lumber owners In the world,
were unharmed by the fires.
