&Cr&i! ACCOUNT
Jewish community at Pitrikau, In Rus
sian Poland, has been stirred to tts
depths and divided into two. warring fac
tions by a manifesto Issued by the local
rabbi forbidding Jews to worship in any
place where-: the women appear with
bare arms. The more "liberal" members
I OT for several seasons have tha
Fall styles in women's coats been
Quite so pronounced In type and
ao swagger In cut and material as those
now being shown In the advance dis
plays for the coming season. The new
materials, running principally In gray
ish and brownish tones, are so rough
In weave as to be almost "horsey,"
and this Idea is being carried out with
Immense pockets, large flaps and but
tons, running from the sixe of a silver
dollar up to dimensions not far from
those of a dinner plate these buttons
being enameled in checks and plaids
In the bolder colors.
High Waists a Feature.
The coats will be almost full length
In cut, and most of them will follow
tha loosely-fitting dlrectolra lines, or
those of. tha high-waisted empire style.
The high waist effect Is heralded as
one of tha distinguishing features of
the very smartest storm and rain coats,
although quite a- number of different
styles, ranging along -the princess and
loose box lines are being shown by
exclusive local houses.
The accompanlng pictures, from
photographs secured by The Oregonlan
through the loan of a selection from
the stock of one of Portland's high
class cloak and ault houses. Is fairly
representative of the new Fall fashions
In storm and rain coats now being of
fered by the leading dealers.
Pockets of Immense Size.
No- 1 shows on of the now styles
In coats of loose cut. with the fullness
falling from the shoulder line In tba
back. Tha material la of heavy wool
In a very coarse weave, with diagonal
etrlpes of brown blending' Into tha
grayish-brown tone of the foundation
color. The pockets are of Immense
sixe. wltb huge tabs on the flapa and
the cuff Is cut to match. Large but
tons of a greenish color. In bright
plaid, add another swagger feature to
this coat.
A semi-fitted grayish-brown coat,
with a broad border of darker hori
zontal stripes startlingly suggestive of
the domestic bat robe or masculine
dressing gown, is shown tn No. 2. Two
rows of buttons outlining the curve
of the waist run down the back from
a point a little above the waist to tha
hip line, where the extra fullness of
the lower part of the coat flares out
from two large inverted plains. Like
all the new atylea, this coat has largs
metal or enamel buttons and bugs
pockets.
Storm Coat of Greenish Gray.
No. t shows one of the smart atorna
coats In greenish gray, of very heavy
material, with huge, fanelly cut metal
buttons and heavily -tailored detail.
ThU coat is cut on the carsetless.
dlrectoire lines and doea not fit closely
at either back or front. One of its
most prominent features Is the ex
tremely high, stiff storm collar, open
at the throat and fastening with a
tailored flap and buttons.
One of the smart hlgh-walsted effect
is shown In No. 4, which 'is in a new
shadow stripe material of somewhat
finer weave than tha other new types.
The high waist and flaring lines of
this coat are emphasised by bias and
horizontal bands of the same material,
stitched and tailored, outlining the
seams. Poliaaed bra-is button dowxt
