GEARHART, Or., Aug:. 22. (Spe
cial.) Gearhart at this season of
the year offers attractions to be
found nowhere else. The weather con
tinues perfect and the days are hal
cyon. The woods back of Gearhart
proper are full of beautiful trails,
arched over with giant tree limbs and
soft mosses hanging in great festoons.
Entire families spend their Summers
here in their own cottages, in rented ones
or in true outing style, in tents, which
are readily obtained.-
Health is fairly contagious. The pure
sea air. dust-free and full of bracing
vigor of salt, the unrivaled purf bathing
and the balmy fragrance of the pine and
hemlock woods, all contribute to pro
duce one of the most healthful spots im
aginable. Since Portland continues so
heated and Gearhart. with its welcome
coolness, is so easily reached after a
short trip by way of our beautiful Col
umbia, it is Indeed no wonder that there
Is no diminishing in the crowds of vis
itors, who arrive daily. The season con
tinues to be at the height of its activity
and there is no abatement in social af
fairs or arrival of guests, both at the
cottages or at Kruse's Beach Hotel.

Miss Jessie Harkins were recently guests
at Kruse's Beach Hotel.

Mrs. James P. Moffett has opened her
Summer cottage, Rusticana, at Gearhart.
Mr. Moffett and Walter have gone down
and will also pass this and the month of
September there. This Is their eighth
year at ' Gearhart for the Summer.
Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Robinson and their
daughter, Bessie, who are occupying the
Whiting cottage at Gearhart Park, enter
tained recently their guests. Mips Marie
Chlvelle and Miss Geneva Signeur, of
Portland.
Mr. and Mrs. D. Marx have arrived to
spend a fortnight at Kruse's Beach Ho
tel. Mrs. William Honeyman has returned
to Portland. , after a visit with her son,
James Honeyman.
Mrs, George Cellars was hostess at a

This famous watering place Is enjoying
a rush, of mid-Summer visitors that is
well merited. The Saturday specials are
crowded and the trains resemble noth
ing so much as huge serpentine monsters
bearing masses of laughing, care-free
humanity off for an outing at incompar
able . Seaside. The leading hotels, the
Moore. Sargents Seaside House and
Locksley Hall, are so admirably situated
overlooking the ocean and surrounded
on one side by natural groves and in
numerable picturesque and quiet re
treats. .
Ideal spots for campers abound, and
fishing, hunting and all torts of outing

Mrs. L N. Fleischner gave a luncheon
party last Saturday In honor of the
birthday of her young daughter, Minnie.
The rooms of the Flelaehner handsome
beach residence were decorated artisti
cally with sweet peas, nasturtiums and
ferns, and with the candle-lighted table
and the huge birthday cake bearing the
few candles Indicative of the youth of
the charming little hostess, the scene
was most attractive. The Invited guests
were Miss Flora Fleischner, Miss Hazel
Blumauer, Miss Fancher Davis and
Louis Goldsmith.
Among the formal affairs was the tea
Ed Patten gave last week at his at
tractive camp. Japanese lanterns strung
through the trees lent an - interesting
note of decoration, and scattered about
over the lawn were rugs, chairs and di
vans. Miss Marie Van Ness, Miss Lu
cile Dunn and Miss Hazel Therkelsen
poured. They were especially attractive
in handsome lingerie gowns. Those en
joying Mr. Patten's hospitality were

small luncheon on Friday a week ago,

On Tuesday of last week Mrs. Louis
H. Tarpley entertained a small bridge
party.
One of the nicest social affairs of the
season was the fancy dress party given
a week ago Friday night by Mrs. Joseph
MacDonald. The floors were waxed for
dancing and the roomy porches converted
into a refreshment booth. Gay colored
Chinese lanterns served to N light the
rooms and the decorations were artistic.
The first prize was given to Miss Dor
othy Huber for her clever portrayal of
the character "Old Maid." Many unique
ana picturesque as well as mirth-pro-
voklng costumes were worn, and the
characters were sustained throughout

A programme of literary and musical
numbers was given on last Friday night a
week ago for the benefit of St. Mark's
Church. Father Waters arranged the en
tertainment and the attendance was most
grauiing. ine vocal numbers by Miss
Winifred Lewis, Mrs. Bertilion, Mrs. L.
Jones and Harry Moore were pleasing.
Tom Dobson's excellent voice was heard
to advantage in two selections.
Dan Qulmby gave a bridge party at
Locksley Hall on Tuesday for his guest,
Carroll Wilson. In addition to the cards
a. musical and literary programme was
rendered. Miss Hazel Holland won the
first prize of the evening.
Mrs. R. P.- Graham was hostess at a
card party last week, when she enter
tained several members of the "Portia
Club. After the cards, lunch was served.
Those who enjoyed Mrs. Graham's hos
pitality were Mesdames Austin, Cake,

On Wednesday afternoon Mrs. A. Tller

beach, and the evening was In every way
a most successful and delightful one.

A. A. Wright "has arrived to Join his
family, who are occupying the Bclinas,'
adjacent to Locksley Hall.
Mrs. Blaine R. Smith has guests at
her handsome beach home. Ala-Bama,
Miss Sarah Glance, well known in Port
land musical circles. Miss Florence Mor
rison and J. A. McHolland, who appeared
in the production of the Toy Maker at
Portland, are enjoying Mrs. Smith's well
known hospitality.
Mrs. Johan Poulsen has returned to
Portland. Her daughter. Mrs. J. J.

will occupy the cottage for the remainder
of the season.

On Thursday afternoon Mrs. Ralph
R. Duniway entertained with five hun
dred at her cottage on Necanlcum Beach,
Seaside", in honor of her guest, Miss Kath
erlne Ward, of Portland.
A very merry party of ladies came over
from Gearhart for the occasion. Mrs.
Dunlway's guests were: Mrs. Robinson,
Mrs. Cellars, Mra. Ball, Mrs. Allen W.
Smith, Mrs. Bennett and Mrs. Moffett,
from Gearhart, .and Mrs. B. C. Johnson,
