(Special.) The cool rains clear
the atmosphere and render life
at Long Beach Ideal this season
It la refreshing to step out of the
heated city Into the coolness of North
Beach. Tourists come down In hundreds
every week-end and the season is at Its
helghth of activity.
Tennis will be a feature of the Summer's
pleasure at Breakers. Wash., where an
Invitation tournament under tha auspices
of the Multnomah Amateur Athletic
Club and the Irvington Tennis Club will
be held from August 1? to 22. Inclusive.
It is Intended to make the tournament,
which Is sanctioned by the National Lawn
Tennis Association, an annual affair. Ten
nis Is almost a necessary accompaniment
to the pleasures of a Summer resort, as
the dnnces and other entertainments that
fro with the game are a great part of the
life at the beaches.
The tournament at Long Beach Is at
tracting ide attention. The plan has a
(rood deal of novelty about It, as it is tha
first tourney held at a beach resort on the
North Coast. The beaches on this side
will send a large representation over and
many Portlanders will go down for It.
The days are filled with social functions.
The events of the tournament will give
everyone who has ever held a racquet
a chance. They are: Gentlemen's singles,
scratch, for "The Breakers" cup, to be
won three times before becoming the
permanent property of the holder; ladles
singles, handicap; gentlemen's singles.

ladies' doubles, handicap; ladles and gen
tlemen's doubles, handicap. Some of the
noted players of the Coast will tAke part,
and it Is expected that the tournament
will be the success It deserves to be. The
tournament committee Is composed of

The biggest bonfire of the last two sea
sons was given by Camp Mack, at Long
Beach, last week. Dray horses were used
to place the logs. Camp Mack is composed
of the following Portlanders: Jack Cal

Gilford. Ray Klumpp, Guy Kennedy
Earl O'Malley. Eddie Pape, Jack Hincks,

Miss Enid Rothchlld Is a recent addi
tion to social life at North Beach.
H. B. Witter and Mrs. Witter are late

Gerald Eastham, of the University of
Oregon, visited North Beach this past

Beach. One of the attractions to the
Ehrmans Is the tennis tournament, in
which Mason will likely enter.

tennis tournament.
Don Swetland was ' an over-Sunday

Harry Nicolal and Mrs. NIcolat (Bessie
de Bevoiee), with their beautiful baby

Miss Lily Dyer is prominently identified
with social life at Long Beach, where
he will remain through August.
R. P. Knight has been a late arrival at

Clifford Nichols, a sophomore of Am
herst College, is a recent addition to

SEASIDE SEASOX AT HEIGHT
Guests From Many States at Ore
gon's Beach Resort.
SEASIDE, Or., Aug. 16. (Special.) Sea
side has received a throng of visitors this
past week that filled all the hostelries.
and the over-Sunday crowd was especially
large. So prominent is this resort that a
very large percentage of its guests come
from the neighboring states, Idaho, Wash
ington and Montana, season after season.
A Summer or a week can well be spent
COLONIES AT BEACHES
at Seaside, acknowledged by all trvaelers
to be one of the lovliest resorts on the
Pacilic Coast. Affairs socially have been
many this past week. Chief among them
being Mrs. John Gill's Indian fancy dress
party and Tom Patton's tea. The cottages
are ail filled and the hotels booked for the
remainder of the season.
Seaside Personals.
Miss Evelyn Wilson is a recent charming
addition to Seaside s social life.

Mrs. Eva Cohn and her daughter. Miss
Belma Cohn, who have been guests of
Mr. and Mrs. Sol Blumauer for a fort
night, have returned to Portland and are
at home at the Nortonta.
Arthur Alexander, the popular tenor, ls
to give a concert at Seaside under the
management of Mrs, Edna B. Jones on
Sunday, August 16. Mr. Alexander will
leave in September for England to con
tinue his concert work there, and prob
ably this will be the last opportunity to
hear the talented young artist this year.
Mr. Alexander's programme will include
many of his big London successes. The
concert will be given at the Octagon hall
and will doubtless be largely patronized,
for the population at Seaside is made up
largely of Portlanders who know Mr.
Alexander's genius. Mr. Alexander ls a
guest at the Moore during his stay.
Dr. Gustav Baar has lately come down
to the beach.
Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Osmund, of
Oregon City, together with Mrs. EL R.
Root and son, Talcott, of Portland, are
at Seaside.
Charles Barton arrived on Wednesday
for a ten days' visit at Cannon Beach.

family arrived this week at Seaside, where
