With the past fortnight as a fitting
prelude to. the real season thrs TPeeJt
opened bright and beautiful, and as
events have proven, brlmfiul of treats. In
tellectual, social and athletic. All of the
hotels have lang-e crowds' of guests, and
the series of dnnres end parties that has
fceen given has made it unusually lively
here. Daily concerts, Saturday and mld
. week hops, artificial anrueements on the
Shell Road, and driving, riding and auto
mobile parties are only a few; of the
diversions that have been lndulgod In this
week.
"Weather conditions during ttie past
fortnight have been id?al for seaside at
' tractions, and there Is little question now,
! that the records will be broken, for the
ncason so far as attendance Is concerned.
There Is no diminution In the over-Sun-.
day and week-end crowds that are at
tracted to Seaside by Its splendid features.
Canoes seek the sheltering nooks of the
'picturesque Necanlcum, throughout the
day and on warm evenings. Fishing is
Kood and even the novice has no difficulty
In catching a long string. Game too Is
plentiful In -the woods bordering Seaside,
, end hunting and fishing parties are ar
riving daily.
. The sea Is remarkably smooth, and ex
tending from liocksley Hall to the Moore

Joyed the surf.
One of the prettiest dancing parties of
the season was that given on Tuesday
evening at the Seaside House by L. ft
Therkelsen for his young daughter. Miss
HaseL The big parlors were decorated
for the occasion and many of Portland's
younger set participated in the festivities.

An Interesting bridge party was gl"en
recently by Mrs. Frank Dayton, of Port
land, In her Seaside cottage. The party
was In honor of Mrs. C. W. Knowles
who will leave this coming month for the
Orient. The rooms were beautifully dec
orated with sweetpeas. ferns and carna
tions. The guests, besides the hostess and
Mrs. Knowles, were Mrs. W. A, Gordon,
Mrs. D. J. Moore, Mrs. U W. Hilllard.

On Tuesday, with Mrs. John F. Logan
md Mvs. W. H. Patterson as chaper
ones. a smaller plcnlo was given on the
hanks of the Necanlcum, above Seaside
House. The guests Indulged in playing
old fashioned games, and the trip was
a most enjoyable one. Those partici
pating were: the Misses Edna and
Vera Patterson, Margaret Fish. Kath

Ruby Scott; and Messrs. Gerald

Russia, has arrived and is spending the

Charles Wright, of Astoria, was a

turned to Portland on Tuesday.
Dr. Frank J. Sladen Is among the
very late comers to the seashore.
Frank Nau was a week-end guest at
the beach.
Miss Emma Whitney has returned to
Portland, after a week's sojourn at
Seaside.

Recent arrivals 'in the cottage colony
are Paul Wessinger, with Mrs. Wessin-
ger. their son Henry and daughter. Miss
Mills. After a week-end stay, Mr. Wei-
singer returned to Portland.

to the beach, where his family have
been installed for several weeks in
their cottage. Miss Lela Goddard Is
their guest.
Mrs. C. Ev Rumelin Is entertaining
Mrs. J. N. Teal and her small daughter,
Ruth, at the Rumelin cottage. Rhoda-
lyn Willis and Roscoe Ashley, nephews
of Mrs. Rumelin, are also guests at the
cottage. Mr. Rumelin was a week-end
arrival.
Recent cottagers to arrive are Judge
and Mra George H. Williams, of Port
land, accompanied by Mrs. Stratton, a
sister of Mra Williams.
Mrs. I. N. Flelschner has as guests at
her handsome beach home the Misses
Jacobs, of Portland, and Archie Gold
smith. Miss Edith Levy returned to Portland
on Saturday, after a fortnight's visit
with her cousin. Miss Germalne Samuel,

J. T. Moylan was an over-Sunday
arrival at the Webb cottage, which his
family have taken this season.
Mra L. A. Carlisle is having a house
party In the form of a family reunion
at her cottage, loch Lame. Her guests
are her sisters, Mrs. W. R. Slade, of
Nova Scotia; Mrs. M. A. Gough, of San
Francisco, and Mra H. S. Goddard, with
her two daughters, Katherine and Mar
celline, from Vancouver, B. C . Others
in the party are: Mra Carlisle's nieces,
Mrs. John J. Roberts and Mrs. T. C.
Smith, with her small son, Malcolm,
from Salem, and Mrs. Leonard Murasky,
of San Francisco. Dr. W. D. Carlisle,
from St. Petersburg, who is home on a
visit, after a five years' absence abroad,

family in their beach home.
Leonard C Jones, with Mra Jones and

Mrs. W. L. Greene has opened her cot
tage at Seaside, having as her guests Mrs.
H. O. Stipe and her two daughters, Ruth
and Inez.
Mrs. R. B. McClung and her family of
interesting children are settled in the
Elmere cottage. Mr. McClung la usually
an over-Sunday arrival.
Mrs. A. M. Smith and her three young
sons, are camping In Hermosa Park.
Occupying the Sea Shell cottage are Mrs.
L. D. Hoye and her daughters Miss Bes
sie Hoye and Mra A- C. Bolligher, with
her small son Kirk. They have recently
entertained W. W. Helnback, who re
turned to Portland this week after a fort

Visitors Take Advantage of Beauti
ful Moonlight Nights.
NEWPORT, Aug. 8. (Special.) Beau
tiful moonlight has prevailed at Newport
all week and bonfires and beach parties
have been much In evidence. The morn
ings of the past week have been cool and
calm but the afternoons have mostly been
windy and blustery. Tourists at New
port, however, enjoy it all. With fishing,
agate-hunting and meeting the two In
coming boats each day the visitors have
much to 60 to keep their minds oft their
vacations of the balance of the year.
Early In the week a beach party was
given near Newport by Bush Davis and
his sister, Miss Pauline. Present as guests
were Mrs. Condon MeCornack, of Port
land; Miss Lucia Wllklns, of Eugene;
Miss Belle Van Duyn and Miss Kate
Kelly, of Eugene. Messrs John Withy
combe, of Corvallls; John Kelly, of
Eugene; and Edward -Van Dyke, of
Grants Pass.
A very enjoyable event at Nye Creek,
Thursday, was a dinner party In honor
of Miss' Lucile Turner, of Portland, a
granddaughter of Clinton Kelly, a famous
Oregon pioneer.- The event was given by
the family of Mrs. Penumbra Kelly and
