PEOPLE ARE FLOCKING TO HOTELS, COTTAGES AND TENTS AT BEACHES
GEARHART PARK. Or.. July 18.
(Special.) The somewhat tardy
season really seems to have been
only a forerunner of better days to come.
The week has witnessed a gradual In
crease In the hotel lists here and at
Seaside and the cottages are nearly all
taken; those that still have shuttered
windows and storm doors are mostly
rented for early August.
The bostelrles are booking families and
guests far ahead into the season and the
Sunday excursion trains bring large
crowds of gayly enthusiastic patrons to
the beach.
The weather has been most propitious
and social affairs of a formal as well as
impromptu nature are beginning to tako
Place among the cottagers. Hotel rest
dents and members of the cottage colony
arrive daily and week-end parties are
frequent and popular.
A topic. Just now arousing universal
comment, is the proposed new bridge
across the mouth of the Necanlcum
River. This long-talked-of bridge will
connect the sand spits of Seaside with
the sand dunes of Gearhart beach, mak
ing an auto road IS miles In length, ex
tending from Astoria to Seaside
Plans and specifications have been sent
to various contractors and it is Intended
that the construction of the bridge will
begin this Summer and be completed be
fore next season.

most sptly and happily named. At the
dinner the decorations were in keeping
with Kla-ha-nee life. Covers were laid
for 28 guests, among whom, besides the
host and hostess, were Mr. and Mrs. T.
P. Kendall. Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Holt and
family, Mr. and Mrs. T. T. Strain, Mrs.
J. B. McDonald, Mrs. Neal, Mrs. Bing
ham and son, Randoipn, Miss Stephanie
Strain and the Gill children, Harold and
Etaa. who are down at the place for the
season. Mr. Gill is usually a week-end
visitor.
Mr. end Mrs. J. C. Caples, of Portland,
are In the Duff cottage. They have with
them Miss Ella Mason.
A. H. Birrell and family were among
the early arrivals, and are entertaining
Miss Ann Chalmers at their handsome
place. Mrs. Birrell is East, having been
called there by the illness of her mother,
Mrs. Shartles. The daughters. Misses
Vinnlfred and Esther, will be down for
the season.
Among the ardent followers of Izaak
"Walton are Harold Gill and Joseph Mc
Donald, who have recently returned from
a fishing expedition on Ball Mountain.
Professor Emit Bnna, a Portlander, is
down for a week's stay at Gearhart.
Mrs. Henry Morgan and her charming
baby. Frances Irene, of Portland, are ex
pected guests for the early week.
Mrs. Arthur Gay is entertaining Mrs.
Hughes and two children in her Gearhart
cottage.
Mrs. T. T. Strain and daughter, Stepha
rie. are installed In their place on the
Kecanicum. Mr. Strain is a guest over
the week end.
Frank Spittle and family, of Astoria,
dave opened their cottage at Cleveland
Station, and are down for .the season.
P. Rummelln, of Portland, ere stationed
In their home for the Summer at Gear
hart. Mrs. William Kinney and family are
down from Iortland for the season.
S. Boach, with Mrg. Beach and the fam
ily, have taken possession of their cot
toise at Gearhart.
Mrs. James Honeyman and children are
In their cottages.
The Robert Livingston cottage, "Drum
tochty," has been taken by Mrs. W. A.
MacRae, of Portland, Mrs. MacRae is
at present in the city, but is expected
early this next week at the cottage. Mr.
MacRae will be down for week-end stays.
Ben Eatz and family are In their cot
tage. Hugh McGulre and family have come
down for the season, as have also G. Du
rand and family, of Portland.
HOl'SE PARTIES ARE POPULAR
Social Season Is Now In Full Swing
at Seaside.
One of the most interesting house par
ties of the season Is thai of Tommie Dob
on. recently of Berkeley, Cal. His
guests are the Misses Eucretla and Mar
gery Mastlck. also of Berkeley; Miss
Rita Bernard and Jack Proebstel, of
Portland. Trn Misses Mastlek were the
motif for a number of entertainments
during their recent stay in Portland at
the home of Mrs. John F. Logan. They
are very charming girls and are popular
among the younger folk. Clambakes,
crabbing parties and morning rides. In
terspersed with musicales. at which Mr.
Dobsc-n entertains with his fine voice,
are making the stay of the party a most
pleasant one. Mrs. "Dobson and Tom ex
pect Howard Charlton. Abe Blackman
and Eilwin Patton from Portland as
guests this coming week.
Kenneth Fenton is entertaining Fred
Higglns, of Stanford. Mr. Hlggins came
up for the PI Delta Koppa, recently
adjourned In Portland He is also a Kap
pa Sigma man.

left early this week for his home in San
Francisco. Mrs. Gosilnger and the chil
dren will remain for tha season.
John Manning has been a recent guest.
Mrs. Blaine Siith, of the Ala-Bama
cottage, will have a nouse party this
week. Her guests will be Mr. and Mrs.
Blaisdell, Mrs. J. A. Strowbridee. Jr., and.
Mr. and Mrs. H. S. McCutchan and two
children. Mrs. Strowbridge and her in
teresting family came down on Monday
Robert Lewis came down to Join his
family last week. Mrs. Lewis and her
two sons. Robert and Hunt, with Mrs.
C. H. Lewis, have been guests at the
Moore for several days. v
Mr. and Mrs. James Ernest Laldlaw
and small son, Scott, departed from Sea
side on Tuesday.
Judge Cleland is a recent arrival for a
week's stay.
Donald Crun Is visiting his mother.
He has recently returned from school In
San Francisco.
N. P. Sorenson and family are stationed
for the season in the Chester cottage.
George H. Hill, with Walter Gadsby,
joined thsir families at Seaside for the
week end.
Dr. E. A. Marshall and Mrs. Marshall
were recent Seaside guests.
John Q. Price, of the University of
Oregon, and Alphln Johnson, of the Ore
gon Agricultural College, are recent
guests at Seaside.
Mr. and Mrs. George Hoyt came down
on Saturday.
Miss Ruby Scott, of Walla Walla, is
visiting Miss Hazel Holland in the P.
C. Holland home.
Wilbur Pelton Reed, grandson of
D. C. Pelton, came down from Port
land on Saturday for a fortnight's stay
at the handsome new Pelton -home.
The house is one of the largest on
the beach, and has recently had a
beautiful observatory and roomy piazza
added. The approach to the house la

Judge and Mrs. A. L. Miller, of Van

Mrs. W. A. Patterson is occupying
Holly Lodge. She has as guests Mrs.

Judge Trenchard, of Astoria, has
been a recent visitor here.
Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Prudhomme. with

were down at the Moore the early part
of the last week.
Gilbert Durham returned to Portland
this last week.

in the Scott cottage for some time.
Mrs. Walter Honeyman has with her
Mrs. Paul Custer, of Portland. Mr.
Honeyman came down for the week

Mrs. John C. Alnsworth. and small
daughter, Catharine, are In their cottage
at Seaside.
I. Loewengart and daughter, Ruth, are
occupying the Stolte cottage. They have
guests with them Mrs. Gerst and Misses
Nita and Amy May.
A. G. Long was a cottage arrival on
Saturday. His son, A. G. Long, Jr., who
accompanied him, will stay for the sea
son. Mrs. Joseph McDonald has as guests In
her cottage, Mrs. Bingham and son, Ran
dolph, of Portland.
Mr. end Mrs. Oskar E. Huber are in
stalled In their Seaside home. Their
three daughters, Dorothy, Winnifred and
Elizabeth, are with them. Mr. Huber
departed for Portland on Monday.
C. H. Hunt and Mrs. Hunt are in the C
W. King place.
Among the lovely new houses at Sea
side is Lochaven the cottage of Dr. J.
K. Locke. It has just been completed,
and Mrs. Locke recently came down with
guests. Mrs. William Bruere and daugh
ter are stopping at Lochaven. . Dr. Locke
and Dr. Bruere were down for a week
end stay, and the party will return to
Portland until later In the season.
Mr. and Mrs. L. Samuels, who are sta
tioned in the Wascher cottage, have with
them their daughters, Miss Germaine
Samuels, Mrs. Clarence Samuel; also two
San Francisco guests, Mr. and Mrs. Ger
llnger. Harry Sargent end family are Installed
In one of the Butterneld cottages for the
Summer.

Delightful Weather Draws Many
. Visitors to North Beach. .
NORTH BEACH. Wash.. July 18.
(Special.) With delightful weather con
ditions to further every plan for outing,
riding parties and trips to North Head,
life saving station and the lighthouse,
parties are taking advantage of the fact
and. affairs have been given an. impetus
that will no doubt last unltl the close of
the season. Recent showers have kept
the atmosphere clear. . The influx of
cottagers and hotel residents and week-,
end guests Is noticeable.
The amusements-are in full swing, with
many attractions added to those present
ed in previous years. The long stretch of
30 miles of hard beach gives the greatest
facilities for the many early morning
driving and walking parties. Social .af
fairs are still greatly of an informal na

Walter Cox, of Portland, was an over
Sunday visitor at his mother's, Mrs.
O'Nell.
A. M. Haradon came down recently to
spend a fortnight with his family. Mrs.
Haradon and baby, Dorothy, have been
at Seacroft since the early season.
Miss Shephard is entertaining guests.
Misses Jessie Peterson, Eva Jenkins and
Delberta Stuart are with her.
