SUMMER
SEASIDE, Or.. July 11. The Summer
population at the beaches continues
to increase. Cottage-owners are ar
riving almost daily. Summer residents
have flocked down, and the resort has
now the aspect of mid-summer. Old and
new friends make up the colony of guests
assembled at the hotels and cottages.
It Is a conspicuous fact that the sea
son here, while a bit tardy, has now
started in full earnest.
Society finds itself getting settled at
Its cottages, riding, driving, boating on
the Necanicum. fishing, clamming and
crabbing, or bathing and early morning
walking parties are the order of the day,
and immense bonfires attest to the
charms of the beach after nightfall. The
new auto road from Seaside to Elk Creek
lacks about one-half mile of being com
pleted, but motoring parties are frequent
and It Is only a short time until the road
will bo in shape.
Dan J. Moore was a week-end visitor
at his hostelry.
Mr. and Airs. L.. Therkelsen and young
children are at Sargent's Seaside House
for the season.
Mr. and Mrs. F. A. Fisher. St., and
Mr. and Mrs. Earl Fisher and family
came to Seaside on the B-ourth in their
big car.
Mrs. R. W. Blackwood, accompanied
by her nephew, a charming youngster.
Master Robert Geary, are recent guests
i.t l)cksley Hall. Mr. Blackwood and
l party of friends are expected down, for
the week end.
Miss Elizabeth Cremer is a guest at
Pinewood Cottage.
Mr. and Mrs. F. A. Rowe, of Portland,
are guests at Seaside.
An auto party from Astoria came down
to try the new road the latter part of
last week. In the party were Senator
and Mrs. Fulton, Mr. and Mis. Clyde
Fulton and son. Alien, Mr. and Mrs.
George V. Sanborn and Mr. and Mrs.
P. A. Stokes.
J. Meyers, of Salem, was a recent
guest at Seaside.
Lrfjcksley Hall last Saturday was the
cene of gay festivities. Dan Quimby
entertained a large number of his young
friend? of Portland and Seaside at a de
lightful dance and an elaborate exhibit
of fireworks. The decorations were very
attractive, red. white and blue. Inter
mingled with evergreens. Mr. Quimby
was assisted in receiving by Miss Hol
land and Walter Davis.
F. A Kollock, of Portland, is at Sea
side. J. E. Higgins and Mrs. Higgins are ar
rivals this past week from Astoria.
Harry Litt was a recent visitor at the
Moore.
A guest at Locksley Hall Is Mrs.
George W. Hamilton, wife of the well
known educator who has charge of the
Portland School of Trades. Mrs. Hamil
ton possesses a very charming personal
ity and is enjoying her initial trip to oil
Pacific.
Mrs. Z. Du Rette is down for the sea
son. Mis Ida Wanstram is staying at Sea
side House.
Mr. and Mrs. P. .C. Holland and fam
ily arc installed in their SeasWe cottage
Captain and Mrs. "William Gudsby. of
Portland, are settled In their handsome
home at Seaside. They have with them
their daughter Alice and her friend. Miss
Dorothy Crook.

MrB. S. A. Best has opened Cedarhurst.

Many Cottages Are Opened and Ho
tel ' Guests Arriving.

(Special.) Awakening from Its Winter
quietude. North Beach is most rapidly
assuming its Summer appearance. Every
boat arriving at Megler brings Its full
quota of cottagers, and the regular hotel
patrons are beginning to come down for

to keep up a lively pace.
Splendid weather conditions have
brought a large number of Portlandera
down this past week, many of whom will
remain throughout the season. Socially
affairs are of an informal nature, but
sports in the open are in full swing, with
numerous bonfires at night and early
morning walking parties.
Opening Cottages at Seaview.
Mr. and Mrs. Schoch and family, of
Portland, came down on Wednesday to
open their Seaview home for the season.
Mrs. J. A. Jennings is in the Schemer
cottage. '
Miss Henrietta Baum, of Portland, is
down for a stay at the Baum cottage.
Hugo Bettman came on Tuesday for a
week's visit.
Harold Howes was a week-end visitor
at Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Masticks'.
Mr. and Mrs. A. M. Haradon and baby
Dorothy came last Thursday and are at
Seacroft for the season. Mr. Haradon
returned to Portland on Sunday.
Among the recent arrivals was Mrs.
James O'Donnell and children, who came
down on Tuesday to take their cottage.
Mrs. Orrm Fithlan and son arrived
early in the season and have been in their
cottage for a fortnight.
Mrs. Dell Stuart, of Portland, is in her
Seaview cottage. She has a guest. Miss
Orrlce; Joscelyn, also of Portland, who
came down on Tuesday.
Arrivals on the first of the week were
Mrs. J. Gibson . and daughters Misses
Daisie and Marguerite. They are in their
cottage for the season.
Mrs. T. J. Seufert, from The Dalles, is
Installed in her attractive cottage at Sea
view. Mr. Colgate and son Hoyt came down
on Monday, and on Thursday Mrs. Col
gate arrived. They have taken Captain
Snider's cottage
Mr. and Mrs. Mcintosh and the Misses
Mcintosh, from Portland,' are at the Wil
lows in their cottage.
Mrs. L Lesser and daughter. Miss Ger
trude, came down from Portland on
Tuesday and have opened their Seaview
home.
Mrs. John Versteeg has a guest. Miss

The Edgar Allen cottage has opened
for the season.
Mrs. William Kendall Is in the Henry
cottage.

Mae Dearborn-Schwab, who came down
early In the season to the Schwab cot

arrivals.
The Dan Hallaher cottage has been
taken by Mrs. A. E. King, from Portland,
for the season.
Early comers were C. W. Lelke and
family, whose cottage was opened at the
first of the season.
Mrs. Charles Mautz is down, as is
also Mrs. Peter Timmerman, in their
own cottage.
Among the new cottages at Seaview
is that of Mrs. H. H. Parker, who came
down recently to take possession for the
season.
Mr. and Mrs. William Sheehy re
turned to Portland on last Monday.
They were accompanied by Miss Irene
Loeb, who has been visiting Miss May
Sheehy at their Seaview cottage. Be
fore Miss Loeb's departure a small in
formal luncheon was given for her by
Miss Cara Mastlck in the Mastick cot
tage. Other guests were Miss Eliza
beth Eastham and Miss May Sheehy.
T. B. Wilcox and family returned
from Portland on Saturday, having
gone back to the city for a few days
after opening their place. The Willows,
last week.
Mrs. J. A. McLean, from Walla
Walla, accompanied by her daughter.
Miss Bess Rice, and Miss Kate Golden,
have taken the Marton cottage for the
season. The party arrived on Monday.
Mrs. George Moulton, of Portland, is

I. Schlltz has purchased a cottage at
Long Beach.
Miss G. Jones and Miss Lillian
Powers, of Portland, are housed at the

day for a few days' stay.

Dr. Nottage returned to Portland the

Arrivals at Newton.
Dr. William Koehler and son. William
F. Koehler, came down from Portland
Tuesday to open their cottage for the
season. Mrs. Koehler will arrive later,
accompanied by her daughter, Mrs. Ca
halln. Among the new cottages at Newton is
that of H. B. Stout. It is occupied by
the family, who will spend the season
here.
Mrs. M. Cavet and daughter, Mrs.
Lewis Mahier, are in their cottage.
S. T. Pierre and Mrs. Pierre, accom
panied by their family, are at Newton
in their beach house.
Mrs, Frank Woodman is installed in
her Knappwood cottage, near Newton.
Ocean Park Notes.
Mr. and Mrs. Mathew Gevurtz, from
Portland, have opened their beach house
for the season. -
Harry Wood and faniily are in their
cottage.

Miss Amanda Keissler has come down
to Ocean Park for the season.

to Portland this week.
Miss Effie Brown and Miss G. McBlroy,
from Pendleton will be at Ocean Park

Tioga and Vicinity.
Mr. and Mrs. Julius Meier and young
children have taken possession of their
Tioga cottage. They are entertaining Mr.
and Mrs. Ludwig Hirsch. The party came
down on the Fourth.
Mr. Isam White was a guest at the hos
telry over the Fourth.

A trio of attractive girls who are spend
ing a fortnight at Tioga are Misses Emma

Raymond Wilcox, of Portland, was a re
cent visitor at the beach.

Hubert Booth King is a Portlander
who was recently here.
Mr. and Mrs. Lew Starr accompanied by
Mr. Sydney Starr returned to Portland on
Friday.

Mrs. A. E. Hutchinson with her small
son Frank, from Salt Lake City, are
guests at the hotel. Mrs. Hutchinson is
a relative of the William MacKenzies of
Portland.
Mr. and Mrs. George H. Day, of Spo
kane, are spending the season on North
Beach. With them Is Mrs. Day's mother,
Mrs. cronee. The party have been tour
ing the Coast cities. Mrs. Day Is an at
tractive young matron and an accom
pushed horsewoman.

who came down on the Fourth. Mrs

is an enthusiastic tennis player, and
spends much of her time on the courts.
In the Fall she will go East to Miss Ma-,
son's school. The Castle, at Tarrytown-on-the-Hudson.

Tuesday witnessed the arrival of the.
State Pharmaceutical Association. The!
congress is in session mainly for the pur
pose of securing a pure food law for Ore-,
gon. Mr. J. M. A. Laue Is the retiring!
president. Last year the association met
at Seaside. Prominent men from all over1
the state are in attendance, many of them
accompanied by their families, and the
affair has had Its social as well as busi
ness nature. Trips were made to the
Light-House, to the Life Saving Station
and also a visit for the first time to the
new Fort Columbia. Wednesday evening
a dance was given in which most of the
guests participated.
The programme of entertainment was
unique and presented many amusing feats
as well as features. It follows: Potato
race for ladies; 100 yard dash, for thin
druggists only; nail driving contest for
ladies; tug of war by druggists and trav
elers. The officers are: President, Clyde
