HE FELT LIKE
EXCUSE GIVEX BY MURDERER
OP TWO AMERICANS.
Bodies or Everett and Wakeley Re
covered From Wild of Xegros.
Murderer in Safe Retreat.
MANILA. July It. The bodies of H.
D, Everett, a Government forester, and
T. R. Wakeley, a school teacher, who
were murdered several weeks ago by
tribesmen while on an expedition into
the unexplored mountain regions of the
Island of Nepros, have been recovered
by Lieutenant Ahern, of the Constabu
lary forces, after a difficult and dan
perous search. Lieutenant Ahern tells
of the finding of the bodies in a tele
gram which has been received here:
Am returning with the remains of Everett
and Wakeley, which we found near their
laiT camp In the Bayaual Mountains. At
first our guides were apparently afraid to
lead us Into the mountains nf the Interior
of the island along the route traveled by the
two murdered men. Lurktly we at length
succeeded tn securing guides who were ac
quainted with Ayhao, the leader of the
murderers, and who took us to the last
camp of Everett and Wakeley.
Ayhao, It was explained, planned the mur
dr while acting as one of the native guides
who were conducting the two white men
Into the Interior of the inland. While gam
bling with the other guides, he drugged the
entire party with the fumes of a plant.
Ayhao and some followers then killed
Everett and Wakeley and five guides. The
only excuse given by Ayhao for murdering
the party was that he "felt like killing
someone.
Lieutenant Ahem and his party
found the botanical and other equip
ment of the two men and also Everett's
money. All the villages and native
tUronerholdn were abandoned upon the
approach of the searching party. Lieu
tenant Ahern states that he endeav
ored to caplut e Ayhao, but was de
serted by his guides, ran short of ra
tions and found the trails so bad and
the rivers so1 swollen that he had to
return with his small force. Ayhao is
reported to be far in the mountains
with many followers.

The party was obliged to stay on top
of the peak longer than anticipated, as
the storm continued for several hours.
The start for the peak was made at
S:3.S o'clock this morning by special

A dollar saved is a dollar earned
but a dollar judiciously in
vested may 'easily be in a few
years $5 or $10 made.
There is no safer investment on
the Pacific Coast today than
good farm land property which
does not depreciate in value, re
gardless of troubles in the finan
cial world, and a few acres of
which will always furnish a liv
ing for a family, whatever the
market value of the land may be.
There is no better-paying safe
investment today than good
farm land close in, which may
be bought at a very reasonable
figure today, but tomorrow, with
the already planned improve
ments and connection with the
city by electric lines, will dou
ble or treble in value.
Now is the time to buy, either
for a home or an investment.
We offer very easy terms when
desired, and are prepared to
make an acceptable proposition
well as to the capitalist.

creased alone the coast and the humidity at
Portland is 21 per cent greater than at the
same time yesterday. Showers and thunder
storms have occurred at widely scattered
places in Nevada and Southeastern Idaho.
The temperatures continue considerably
above normal, and. although the changes
since yesterday have been slight, the high
temperatures are more noticei.ble on account
of the Increase In humidity.
The indications are for generally fair
weather Sunday In this district, except in
Southern Idaho, where thunder showers are
probable. No marked changes in tempera
ture are expected, except that it will be
cooler where showers occur.
FORECASTS,
Portland and vicinity Sunday, probably
fair and continued warm; westerly winds.
Oregon and Washington Sunday, proba

westerly winds.
Idaho Sunday, fair north portion, proba

MR. WM. RENTPAYER,
Portland, Or.
Dear Sir:
Did you know that
300 will build a home?
It will be built ac
cording to your own
ideas of what a home
should be.
Years of experience
has taught us what the
home-builder wants.
Rent-paying is the
greatest drain
upon the savings of
the thrifty family.
What the average man
pays ror rent will
build him a home three
or four times over dur
ing his lifetime.
You know that, dont
you?
Landlords wouldn't
build houses to rent
if they' couldn't make
a bigger rate of inter
est than loaning on a
mortgage.
Own your own home.
Then every dollar you
expend upon its beau
tification is yours,
not your landlord's.
Write for our book
let. It means much to
you.
Yours very truly,
HARTMAU ' & THOMPSON,
Chamber of Commerce.
