OREGON G. A. R. WILL MEET
AVXTJAli ENCAMPMENT AT NEW
PORT THIS WEEK.
Reports Will Show This State Is
One of Few In Which Organ
ization Is Growing.
The Department of Oregon, G.' A, R.,
will receive reports from the comman
der and his official staff at the coming
annual encampment, which opens at
Newport next Tuesday, which will
show that the organization. In this
state Is one of the very few through
out the country that show an increase
in membership Instead of a falling off.
At almost all state ftatherings through
out the United States this Summer,
members of the order will be apprised
of the fact that owing to the onward
narch of the years the Civil War vet
erans keep dropping, one by one, from
the ranks and the different organiza
tions are gradually being depleted be
cause the old soldiers are called, by the
final muster.
But iti this state the Grand Army or
ganization shows a creditable Increase
in members and stregnth during the
year that ends this week. A number
of new posts have been formed
throughout the state and existing posts
have recruited members outside of the
order. The annual address of Com
mander S. F.. Blythe and the report of
Adjutant-General C. A. Williams will
show the department in an exceeding
ly healthy condition. Few other state
departments have even held their own
during the year.
The encampment at Newport will be
attended by not less than 1000 old sol
diers and members of the auxiliary wo
men's organization, the Women's Relief
Corps and the Ladles of the G. A. R.,
who hold annual conventions at the
same time and place as the Grand
Army.
Special coaches will be attached to
the Southern Pacific train leaving
Portland Tuesday morning at 8:15
