NOW that the chill winds of Winter
and the lingering rains of early
Spring have been definitely replaced
hy gentle, fragrance-laden zephyrs and
bright sunshine, feminine coats andcloaks
of substantial texture are due for moth
balls and camphor, and a stowing away
for the Summer in the dark recesses of
milady's clothes press or cedar chest. It
is to the dainty little coat of eilk and lace
as much a smart accessory to the Spring
or Summer costume as for protection on
cool afternoons or evenings that all fem
inine minds are turning now, and various.
Indeed, are the offerings in these natty
little wraps on display in the local shops.
So elaborate in pattern, so exquisitely
fine in material, so certainly Parisian in
cut and desitm. are some of these dis
tracting offerings, that only the limita
tions of one's pocketbook can curtail the
shopper In making her selection.
Many of the Imported wraps are of
pattern lace, with the finest and most
expensive of dainty, hand-made embroid
eries, and double linings of the finest
silks; upon these, of course, the price tag
mounts well Into three figures: yet. for
the shopper who must figure carefully on
each item of her Spring and Summer
wardrobe, there are handsome little wraps
of silk and lace to be had for quite a
modest consideration, with attractiveness
of design and smartness of cut to satisfy
the most fastidious.
A random half-dozen of the newest of
ferings, selected from the extensive stock
of a local outfitting establishment, are
shown in the accompanying pictures.
A dainty, fluffy creation, all in golden
brown, and with the virtue of real warmth
to strengthen its attractiveness, is shown
in No. 1. Underneath the coat pattern of
heavy brown silk lace, is a double lining
of silk in exactly the same tint, and
"fluffy ruffles" of brown silk auze finish
off the wrap all round, the frills being
particularly effective down the front
edges and In the sleeves. This type of
coat can be had In black and all the tan
tones.
A beautiful weave of Copenhagen blue,
in a one-piece pattern of heavy lace, is
shown In No. 2. The silk lining Is of ex
actly the same tint as the lace, and a
loose fringe effect finishes off the bottom
and short sleeves attractively. The pic
ture shows the leading style of semi-fit

ting back, which will prevail in the lace
coats as well as In cloth garments.
Of quite a different type is the long
matinee coat of pure white lace, shown in
No 3. The material is very soft, is sewn
upon a double lining of white eilk, and Is
augmented by long tassel-finished tabs of
gold embroidery In Oriental pattern, with
cuff bands of the same, finishing the
loose, three-quarter length sleeves.
A charming little coat in champagne
color, with loose, slit sleeves, 'is shown in
No. 4. On this style of short coat, the
bow and tabs of lace and ribbon,, in the
tone of the lace, or In a harmonious blend
NOTES OF PORTLAND PUBLIC LIBRARY
WITH the coming of Spring the cir

at the Library always fall off to a de
gree. The total circulation for the month
from all departments was, however, 30,
763; of this the Albina branch circulated
238.1 books, the East Side branch 2619 and
the Sell wood branch 1763.
The Library offers extra privileges this
year to Its patronB In the way of vaca

ten books at once to be retained until
October 1, if he sees fit, without re
newal. These books cannot be 1908 pub-v
lications nor current periodicals, nor
seven-day books, nor five-day books, but
it Is hoped that this privilege will be
much appreciated by many who wish to
do serious reading during the Summer
and who wish to take books with them to
mountain or seashore. The older fiction
can be taken out upon these cards and
mothers may find It convenient to take
with them extra books from the chil
dren's room for the benefit of their chil
dren. These cards are in force now and
can be asked for at the circulating desk.

most expensive types of lace coat. The
design is in one piece, of heavy, hand
