GOOD WORK AT OREGON
Philbrook, of TThttman, With 131
Fest In Discus, Establishes the
Only 'rw Mark Made
During the Vear.
BT BEFEREEL
Although the Beason of intercollegiate
track and field sports which has Just
closed in the Pacific Northwest has not
been marked by many record-breaking
feats, there have been some exciting
meets- and some creditable individual
performances. The high marks set by
the record-breaking athletes of the past
few seasons have made new records
much more difficult to establish than
they once were. Notwithstanding this
fact. a number of individuals have done
work that brands them as classy
athletes.
The work of Philbrook. the "Whitman
captain, In the discus throw, entitles him
to the only new record established in
the Northwest tills year. His throw of
121 feet Is good enough to win most any
where, and what's more, his work has
been consistent. Edmunson, the Idaho
distance man, is another man that has
shown Kood form in his favorite" events,
although it is very doubtful whether he
can run fast enough to defeat JJavolt,
of the Oregon Agricultural College, in
either the SSO-yard run or the mile.
Davolt is a regular horse in the long
runs and always has plenty of speed at
the finish.
Huston and Moon, the . Oregon sprint'
era, have both dono splendid work this
year. Huston, . who is a sophomore at
Eimene. has been credited with ten
seconds several times this Beason. He
runs with a rapid stride, has plenty of
strength and neve and puts on a great
burst of speed at the nnisn. moon, jie
gon's freshman sprinter. Is a new man
on the track, but he has shown himself
to be one of the fastest men In the
Northwest. As a freshman sprinter, he
in without a Deer in the history of North
west athletics. His work in the 220-yard
dash in the recent meet at Eugene was
one of the best exhibitions mat me
writer has ever seen. Martin, of "Whlt
mnr and Montgomery, of Idaho, have
also done highly creditable work la the
sprints.
Greenliaw Is Fast.
Oreenhaw, the fleet-footed O. A. C.
boy, leads the Quarter mile sprinters,
with .Lowell and Hold, of Oregon, not far
behind. None of the Inland Empire col
leges had fast men In the quarter this
year, and Lowell and Raid had things
all their own way, until they ran up
against Greenhaw. In the long-distance
runs there have been plenty of good men.
In addition to Davolt and Edmunson may
be mentioned Johnson, Covll and Clark,
of Pullman, and Dodson, DownB, Slevers
and May, of Oregon, all of whom have
made very fast time.
Montgomery of Idaho, Philbrook of
Whitman and Kuykendall of Oregon lead
the season's hurdlers, and Kuykendall is
high man in the broad Jump. Chapman
and Lounsberry. both of O. A, C, and
Philbrook of Whitman have done the best
work in the high Jumps, while Moullen
has been the star of the mediocre bunch
of pole-vaulters. Moullan has also taken
a turn at the high jump and has done
good work in the weights.
Wolfe, the big O. A. C. lad. Is entitled
to first honors in the shotput, with Mc
Intyre of Oregon a fair second and Phil
brook of Whitman third. Halm of Pull
man and Hall of O. A. C have both de
feated Zacharias, Oregon record breaker
of last season in the hammer throw.
Aside from Philbrook, Mclntyre and Ja
mleson (O. A. C.) are the only men that
have done anything worth mentioning
with the discus. Belay honors are di
vided between Idaho, Whitman and Cor
vallls. Oregon Has Strong Team.
The remarkable feature of the season's
work is the strong team developed at
Eugene by Trainer Hayward, notwith
standing the loss of Kelly, Moores, Hug
and MoKlnney Oregon's great quartet
of point-winners of last season. Nearly
all of Hayward's stars are either fresh
men or sophomores. .Roberts, . Moon,
Downs, May, Slevers and several- others
have coiuo to the front in one season.
Other teams retained nearly all their vet
erans, but It remained for Hayward to
whip thein with a bunch of new men.
The chief reason for this lies in the fact
that track athletics have always been
taken more Berlously at Eugene than
elsewhere In the Northwest, and that the
Oregon students worked harder for suc
cess on the track than do their rivals.
Beside this, Hayward is an excellent
trainer and a disciplinarian of the first
order. He has developed a good bunch
of men around which to build up a strong
team for another season.
The practice of holding large numbers
of dual meets during a single season is
one tliat should be frowned down upon
in the Northwest. This year's Oregon
team held dual meets with Pullman,
"Whitman and Corvallis, beside competing
in the Columbia meet here and in the
Interstate contest at Beattle. There is
such a thing as holding too many athletic
contests and wearing men out. Baseball
and football games can be played every
week without injury to the players, but
three hard track meets during a single
season are enough. The colleges of the
Northwest ought to hold a conference
meet every year, either at Portland, Seat
tle or Spokane and eacfti college should
have one or two dual meets with Its
nearest neighbors. This schedule would
'furnish plenty of Bport aud would not
wear the young athletes out and keep
them away from their studies.
It is said that the recent Walla Walla
conference appointed a committee to ar
range for a conference track meet at the
AlaAluk-Yukon-Pacllio Exposition next
year, and it Is hoped that the event will
be arranged and that it will be held an
nually thereafter. Then and not till then,
will track athletics in the Northwest be
placed upon a satisfactory basis.

That morning game was a decorator
all right. Those Seals decorated their
batting averages until they bristled.
Did you notice Ote Johnson's great
and wondrous windup? Those four men
he fanned were hypnotized when they
saw Johnson wiggle and squirm before
shooting; the ball.
Manager McCredle batted infield to
a bug team. Every player did a stunt
at fielding; left-handed. This was
enough to put the Jinks on the game.
The 12-lnnlng game produced a fun
ny angle. Bobby Groom pitched full
nine innings, yet Ed Pinnance gets
credit of winning, while poor Oscar
Jones gets stabbed with a defeat, while
Willis' part is not a matter of record.
When Doc Anderson was howling his
loudest at Umpire O'Connell the ump
smiled and walked over to where the
bug sat and said: "I'll give you $20
if you'll finish the game." Anderson
almost fell dead making a refusal.
Ban Johnson, president of the Amer
ican League, has appealed to the Mayor
of Detroit to prohibit betting on the
ball games. This will happen In Port
land unless some of the gamesters curb
their lever.
Judge W. W. McCredle Is going to
put a plainclothes man at work in the
grandstand, and the first man caught
making a bet on the game will be
quietly told to cut It out. A second of
fense will mean that he will be refused
admission. So far, and to the credit of
the game here in Portland, gambling
on the games hasn't obtained much of
a foothold.
FANS VERY HAPPY
Actions of Portland Team Meet
Expectations.
CHEATED OUT OF GAMES
AVeather Has Queered Fight Out of
24 and Two More Are Ties The
Beavers Pass Every Other
Team Up or Down.
BT WILL G. MAC BAB.
Portland fans have been denied some
of the baseball that the league schedule
provided for us, yet the way the team
has been moving along has more than
satisfied the fans'. This week Just end
ed was the fourth, and instead of hav
ing enjoyed 24 games, the best we have
had is 16, and two of those were left
in a bow knot. Of the games played,
the McCredleltes have won ten and lost
four, which is going some, taking every
thing into consideration.
Since the battle began, Portland has
passed every team In the league, going
up and coming down, ye': we haven't
adornel the top of 'the percentage col
umn. For this let's be thankful, for It's
better to climb up there and stay than
to do as tse rest of the teams have
done, get to the top, only to be kicked
out of the berth again. The series with
the Seals has been a battle In every
game. Twice up to the present writing
the teams have extended into the extra,
inning stake and both times Portland
turned up the winner.
Pitchers All Doing "Well.
All of McCredie's pitching staff are mov
ing along nicely, and they are a great
deal better than the dope on them
shows. Postponed games on account of
rain never help a pitching staff early
in the Beason because a couple of days
of enforced rest Is very apt to put a
slabeter back several weeks. Since the
season opened at home we haven't had
but one or two warm days. Almost ev
ery game has been played in weather
that was raw and cold and rainy, and If
our pitchers hadn't been In rare form
we should not have won as many games
from the visiting teams as we did. They
were playing ball down South while we
were laying off.
By winning right -along Portland has
pushed San Francisco out of second
place, and by winning Friday's game we
took ia pretty firm hold on the "pre-empt
ed spot. Los Angeles Is having a soft
time with Oakland. Portland must have
taken the heart out of the Athenians,
for the San Francisco critics and fan3
down there are saying all kinds of
harsh things about Rip Tan Haltren's
crew. Los Angeles, while the team may
not have the best of the schedule at
home, has been lucky In landing on Oak
land when the Athenians have tossed up
their grit. This will give the Loo Loos
a big lead in the percentage column and
Portland will have to keep up its win
ning streak to dislodge them from the
top.
Ought to Keep on Winning.
Captain Dillon will be here this week
and then we will see what we shall see.
Bud Pernoll should be able to take two
away from the Angels. In fact, with the
possible exception of the games that
Dolly Gray may pitch, we should take
them all. In the meantime the Seals
' and the Athenians will be doing battle
down South and Oakland always seems
to be able to make the Seals extend
themselves to break even. Undoubtedly
with the toasting the team is getting
Oakland will have taken a brace when
it meets the Seals, and if it does there
is a chance that we may oust Los An
geles from the leadership.
I notice a funny thing printed in the
San Francisco papers. After a talk with
Cal Swing, president of the league, and
Henry Berry, the scribes are telling
that Portland is becoming a great base
ball town. This is a Joke, for ever since
Portland Joined the Coasters, and be
fore, it has been the best baseball town
for its size in the country. Baseball
here is not Just awakening, and if any
of those baseball scribes have this fool
ish notion stuok away in their conning
tower it's about time they had the
trouble removed. If it hadn't been for
the popularity of the game here there
would not have been a northern wing to
the Coast League very long. It has
been an off and a bad week when the
visiting teams, even when we had a
consistent cellar championship team, did
not : make a nice bit of money. Now
Pretland hasn't gone baseball mad. We

AWAIT THE BIG SHOW
Gans-Xelson Fight Draws Attention
of Fans.
BT VnLXi O. MAC HAB.
Now that Jimmy Coffroth, the crack
San Francisco fight promoter, has finally
succeeded in matching Joe Gans and Bat
tling Nelson, fight fans the country over
are just waiting for July to roll around.
Nelson will be in Portland for several
days this week, giving an exhibition box
ing match with his sparring partners, and
this will give the fight fans a chance to
see him in action. Gans, of course, is
well known here, for he fought Tommy
Tracey.
To get Nelson back into the ring again
with the Baltimore black has been no
easy task. The Battler has stood out for
beating Gans gave him, sending him
back, were rot. He said: .
"There has been a lot of that stuff
printed, and there's no truth In it I'm
Just as good today as I was when I
fought Gans, and to prove this I went
back over the line and fought the second
raters Just to prove that I hadn't gone
back. The boys I met were not top-
notchers, but they were tough and hard
to beat, and no fighter who Iras gone
back has beaten them."
Just how any one can figure Nelson
to win I am at a loss to understand. It
is not on the dope. We will throw out
the first Brltt-Nelson fight. That ' was
so even that It had better have been
called a draw. The second meeting saw
Brltt's finish with a knockout, but the
next time they met Brltt gave the Dane
an awful mauling. What happened In
the Los Angeles meeting must needs be
thrown out also, for neither of the lads
were ready for a battle. Nelson beat
Young Corbett when he was just topping
the toboggan. Now, after this, go down
the list and see whom Nelson has beaten
that ever had a look in with Gans.
Of course, it will be dangerous search
terms that not only Gans, but the general ng to look over Gans' record, for It Is
flehtlng public has all along held were J impossible to tell Just how many fakes
unreasonable. Nelson has always denied
that the conditions that he Imposed on
Gans in that Goldneld battle were un
just, but I have met too many men who
were on the Inside of the Gold field affair
to take any stock in the Nolan-Nelson
end of the talk. Of course, if the Dane
can get away with this line of talk and
make some of the people believe that he
and not Gans was the sufferer, all well
and good.
One thing Is sure the fight wlU be one
of the best drawing cards held in Ban
Francisco for a long time. Even with
Ketchel's popularity, Gans and Nelson,
because of their old and long-drawn-out
quarrel, will smash records. Gans will
without doubt enter the ring a favorite,
and, what is more, unless there is some
thing screwy in the match, Gans should
beat the Battler. There is no comparison
between the two men as fighters or box
ers. Gans has it on the Dane in punch
ing and punishing ability, and he Is 100
years ahead of him in ring generalship
and science.
That does not mean that Nelson hasn't
a chance to beat the negro, for he has.
Nelson is Just the kind of a fighter that
is liable to crack the best of them.- He
told me that all the stories about the
