and as a natural consequence, remain in a rut.

PRIZES FOR PARADE
East Side Children's Pageant
Rose Festival Feature.
OFFER BY BUSINESS CLUB
Organization Will Pay Three Cash
Premiums for Best Decorated Ve
hicles With Child Drivers En-,
tries Are Being Received.
At a meeting of the East Side Busi
ness Men's Club yeeterday, it was de
cided to offer- for the children's pa
rade on the East Side during the Hose
Festival, a prize of $10 for the best
decorated pony cart driven by a child
of less than 15 years of age, another
of $10 is offered for the best decorated
dog-cart driven by a' child of 15, and a
prize of $5 for. the best-decorated bi
cycle -ridden by a child under 15. All
desiring to compete should eend their
names and addresses by May 25, to C.
A. Pigelow, president of the Business
men's Club, care Markell & Co., Union
avenue and East Morrison street.
The first entry for the dog-cart prize
was received from Oregon City and is a
4-year-old boy, who will drive a dog
cart. Children from the North Central,
Brooklyn, Stephens' Addition and Clin
ton Kelly schools will met In the Ladd
field, south of Hawthorne avenue, Tues
days, Thursdays and Saturdays at 4
P. M. to -drill for the parade. Mount
Tabor, Sunnyside and Montavilla chil
dren, and also children from the Ver
non, Williams Avenue. Highland and
Thompson will also meet together ac
cording to arrangements yet to be
made.. Parents are requested to assist
in this matter as far as they can do so.
Every East Side parent who is sure
that the children under his family tree
are the smartest, prettiest, cutest chll
i dren on earth has a glorious chance to
prove It to the world. This year the
East Side celebration of the Rose Fes
tival Is to be noteworthy. Although
the children's parade prizes have just
been announced, it is certain that the
East Side will do Itself proud, and that
a most unique parade will be the re
sult is evident.
If you are an East Side father and
there is a goat In the neighborhood, a
pony, a good-natured dog, a sheep, even
a prize rooster that can be made to pull
anything on wheels, runners or a com
bination of the two, there is a chance
for you to make that kid of yours the
happiest In the town. The committee
wants novel "Vehicles drawn by unusual
combinations of beasties; and it also
wants decorated vehicles, decorated
dog-carts, decorated pony carts, and
none but children under 15 years need
apply.
A parade of this character has never
been attempted in the city or the
Northwest before, but the Business
Men believe that the mere announce
ment of their plans will so stir the pat
riotism of East Side parents that en
tire success will be guaranteed. The
East Side has the children, thousands
on thousands of them; it also has the
roses In ton lots, and this, mixed with
several hundred pounds' pressure to the
square inch of home loyalty," is what
the business men are depending on.
This year, the children's parade, the
chief feature of last year's carnival,
will be given only on the East Side,
by East Side children. There it Is
hoped to have 2000 children in line,
and with the co-operation of the East
Side parents this can easily be attained.
During the coming week Professor
Rlngler and his assistant, Mr. Larlmore
of the Y. M. C. A., will visit the various
East Side schools and enroll children
for the parade; a word to the children
at home will enable the East Side to
make its first public parade the best
the city has witnessed.
